Visitor E-news January 2013
 Greetings,

We would like to wish a happy and healthy New Year to all of our members, friends, and visitors! We are looking forward to some of the amazing things that are already planned for 2013.

Our 2013 Region Guide is going to print as you read this, and will be ready to be distributed in a couple of short weeks. It is packed full of festivals, events, photos, information, and so much more. If you are looking for information on our region, this is a great and valuable resource!

The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce will be going mobile and will be a part of Maine's only award-winning mobile app. The travelMAINE Mobile App
gives you a convenient way to find information on over 365 chamber members representing places to eat, stay, play, shop,
services and so much more right from your mobile device! Look for more information about the app in the next couple of months.

We have already started the planning process for the 51st Annual Windjammer Days. Last year saw a pirate invasion of the Harbor, a flash mob, an incredible parade, spectacular fireworks, and so much more. This year, we have lots of things in the works, including some old festival favorites as well as some new and exciting plans. All we can say is that June 25th and 26th are two dates not to be missed!

We have also gotten a bunch of questions from people wanting to know if there will be a Second Annual Claw Down - the answer to that is yes! The Second Annual Claw Down will be in September; we are working hard on nailing down a specific date and will announce that as soon as it is finalized.

One thing is for sure: 2013 promises to be full of surprises and excitement, and we hope that you will be a part of it!

Warm wishes,

Catherine Wygant Fossett

Executive Director

Call for entries for Maine Photography Show 2012

There are four categories: 1. Color, 2. Black & White, 3. Trees, and 4. Student. Trees are the theme this year. Trees are essential in our lives, and this annual special theme celebrates them in all aspects. Trees provide us with fuel, food, paper and other products. They are part of the landscape and provide shade and shelter. The are also important for the ecology--producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the air. Trees provide habitat for animals and plants. They even have mythological aspects. We are soliciting images that represent trees in a creative way. The Student category is open to photographers who are 18 or under.  All photographers who live in Maine or have a summer home here are invited to enter. The cost to enter is $10 per image with a maximum of three images which can be in different categories. Entries will be taken December 1st through February 1st, 2013. Go to www.mainephotographyshow.com for entry form, rules and details.

January Artist of the Month: Eric Johnsen

Eric Johnsen photo The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library is pleased to introduce the photography of Harpswell resident, Eric Johnsen. Eric is a self-taught landscape photographer and camera collector who finds beauty and redemption, even the sacred, in the natural world. He grew up in Appleton Village on a sprawling dairy farm that gave him both an appreciation of nature and the freedom to search and explore the fields and streams that lay at his feet. An idyllic childhood, a hardworking mother, and positive role models all helped to lay the groundwork for a natural curiosity and reverence for place. Finally, with his stepfather Gene Graves as a mentor and helpful advice from Brian Vandenbrink, and after 5,000+ digital images the first year, and 10,000+ hours later, he is seeing the culmination of 7 years in what he calls "Reflections on Nature." If you are interested in seeing Eric's display, come to the library any time during their business hours of Tuesday 10-4:30, Wednesday and Thursday 10-7, Friday 10-4:30, and Saturday 10-1:30.

In the course of the next ten plus years, Bob crewed with Doug, delivering boats up and down the west coast of Mexico and Central America.
