Call for entries for Maine Photography Show 2012 There are four categories: 1. Color, 2. Black & White, 3. Trees, and 4. Student. Trees are the theme this year. Trees are essential in our lives, and this annual special theme celebrates them in all aspects. Trees provide us with fuel, food, paper and other products. They are part of the landscape and provide shade and shelter. The are also important for the ecology--producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the air. Trees provide habitat for animals and plants. They even have mythological aspects. We are soliciting images that represent trees in a creative way. The Student category is open to photographers who are 18 or under. All photographers who live in Maine or have a summer home here are invited to enter. At the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library:
December Artist of the Month: Alice Larrabee
When Alice Larrabee moved to Boothbay in the summer of 1998, a carved wooden pig holding a mailbox stood at one end of her circular driveway on Route 27. The mailbox belonged to the Rittalls, who lived across the road, and the pig had been carved by Chetley Rittall, who was well known as a master woodcarver. Affectionately dubbed "Ms. Piggy" by locals, the pig stood upright on its two hind hoofs, and was usually dressed in a skirt and blouse, or a sweater. Alice thought it might be fun to come up with an outfit, so she asked Joan Rittall if she could try her hand at dressing the pig. "Be my guest!" she said, laughing. She knew that it wasn't as easy as it looked, and probably thought Alice wouldn't last long, but for the next twelve years Alice became Ms. Piggy's devoted "wardrobe mistress" and dressed the pig in literally dozens of different outfits. "Dressing the Pig", from which this information was taken, is a recently published book created by the "wardrobe mistress", Alice Larrabee! It is full of pictures and interesting descriptions of the wardrobe and Ms. Piggy's life on the road. Some of those pictures are the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's art display for the month of December. If you would like to come on in and take a look, the library's new hours of operation are Tuesday and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
