Mid-Winter Greetings -

Calendar October 10-11, 2013, for The Arc of Aurora's justice conference in the Denver area!  We are still working to confirm keynote and plenary speaker info, specific location, and other event details.  Keep posted via next month's VTrail Update for details.

We applaud the Dept. of Justice for charging the five suspects in the heinous case out of Philadelphia last year where individuals with developmental disabilities were allegedly imprisoned, assaulted, abused and exploited with hate crimes.  Read more about these charges under the Articles section below, second to the last article.

And as is always the case, continue to let us know how we might be a resource to you in your work to help insure justice for victims of crime who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Confronting the Sexual Abuse of Women with Disabilities by R. Amy Elman With contributions from Tiffany Lodholz
Published in 2005 and available on the National Online Resource Center on Violence Against Women, this article has a good References' list.  An excerpt from its introduction explains the paper's purpose: "The document opens with a brief overview of the origins of our knowledge concerning the sexual abuse of women disabilities. It then considers the methodological quandaries related to sexual abuse research in general and the data on women with disabilities and the men that abuse them. Recognizing the obstacles and related gaps in our knowledge about the sexual abuse of women with disabilities may put us in a better position to both grasp the problem and pursue effective strategies for its prevention. I conclude with an exploration of the efforts of women with disabilities and their allies to counter sexual abuse.
