Welcome Newly and Re- Elected Board Members

At the membership's 2012 Annual Meeting held at the Cinema Grill on Saturday, November 17, Cathalina Fontenelle, Ron Hutter, Jesse Ogas, and Vicki Spillane were elected to The Arc of Aurora Board of Directors, and Carolyn Henry, Von Limbaugh, and Ann Rossart were re-elected to serve on the association's Board.  As the association's leadership, Board members make often difficult decisions regarding

policy direction and use of the association's resources.  Many thanks to these folks for their commitment to The Arc of Aurora!

Salvation Army Aurora Care Center Has Moved

The Salvation Army Aurora Cares' new location is 802 Quari Ct. in Aurora. Hours: Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. 3 p.m.  For information call: 303-364-1965.  You may walk-in for food Monday-Thursday. Bring ID, proof of address and family. Appointments are mandatory for financial assistance.

 

Technology Can Help with Your Health 

The Department of Health and Human Services has a total of 25 Health-related Apps. They can help individuals track their health. The Apps are available on iPhones, Androids, iPod Touches, iPad, Blackberries, Blackberry tablets, Android tablets, Palm OS/web OS and Windows Mobile.  

  

FASD: Dealing with Stealing - Nathan Ory - This installment of the eLearning series
focuses on the appropriate and most effective way to deal with children with FASD when they steal.   This is session is suggested for parents, caretakers or educators of children with FASD.

 

40 Amazing iPad Apps for People with Learning Disabilities

While the verdict is still out on technology's influence on the lives of individuals with disabilities, some may benefit from the Apps that have been created to enhance communication and fine motor skills.

Self-Advocacy Online Helps People with I/DD Take Charge

The Research and Training Center on Community Living (RTC) at The University of Minnesota and The Arc of the United States have partnered to support an innovative website specifically for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to help them advocate for themselves and take charge of their lives. Self-Advocacy Online is a content rich, accessible online educational and networking tool developed by the RTC and promoted by The Arc of the United States.

Easy to Love but Hard to Raise - A blog dedicated to and written by parents who are raising children with disabilities, including FASD. This particular entry  addresses a mother's struggle with the decision of whether or not to homeschool her son with FASD. Every child has the right to an education. Resource on Assistive Technology

You may be hearing about technology that might help support people with I/DD.  This resource provides information on those technologies, including IPads.

  

Save the Date: Achieve with Us Film Festival Celebrating National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month - Sunday, March 3 - Denver Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax, Denver.  The Arc of Aurora is joining other Arc Chapters throughout the state to sponsor this event - look for additional details on film showing times and how to get tickets in future issues of this News You Can Use.

 

New Diabetes Education Available

Are you concerned that you or a loved one has diabetes? Advocacy Denver's (i.e., The Arc of Denver) Health Care Advocacy Program is offering free health education to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. PEAK Parent Center's Conference on Inclusive Education
is accepting registrations. Registration is open for the 2013 Conference on Inclusive Education! PEAK expects the 2013 Conference to sell out - space is VERY limited at their new location. Special Ed Advocate

In this issue of the Special Ed Advocate you will learn how to handle a parent-school crisis, what to do if you think your child's rights have been violated, and how to avoid power struggles with the school.

  

The Denver Regional Mobility and Access Council's (DRMAC) Transportation Information and Assistance Center offers free phone consultations to help metro area residents identify transportation options. Find the ride that is right for you! DRMAC's Transportation Resources Specialist will help determine what your specific transportation needs are and connect you to appropriate transportation providers. Call 303-243-3113. Hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday -Friday.

 

PEAK Parent Center Offering Free Advocacy Workshop: Advocacy 101

Join other parents, advocates and educators on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, from 5:00PM - 8:30PM at Aurora Mental Health Center, 1504 Galena Street, Aurora, CO 80010. Light snacks will be provided. 2.5 Contact Hour Certificate of Completion is available upon request. Childcare and Spanish interpretation is available and must be requested by December 3. 2012 Annual Meeting

Paid members of The Arc of Aurora and their guests, totaling nearly 100 people, attended the November 17 Annual Meeting.  In addition to conducting the business of the organization, members saw Wreck-It Ralph and enjoyed pop and popcorn.  Thank you AGAIN to the Civitan Club of Aurora that provided Thanksgiving food baskets to help members fill their holiday tables with a greater bounty.

Spotlight On ...  The Arc of Aurora Advocates Nancy Bowden and Hanni Ruehrdanz

Children or adults, school or work, IEP or IP, morning or afternoon, Christmas or scholarship time, court or work.  It doesn't matter where or when, Nancy and Hanni work tirelessly with the people The Arc of Aurora serves and whomever else necessary to improve individuals' with I/DD and their families' quality of life.  For their knowledge, tenacity, and commitment, our hats are off to Hanni and Nancy!
