fitnessFitness Success Story: Bill Fox
Workouts improve physical fitness and help reduce lower back pain
Bill Fox
When recreation center member Bill Fox was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in his lower back, he knew he would have to tailor his regular exercise routine to help maintain flexibility and posture while reducing pain. In need of a low-impact workout, he decided to try Deep Water Aerobics at Great Neck Recreation Center. His initial concerns about swapping high-impact exercises for a water fitness class were quickly erased.

"I found that the class had a broad range of age groups, included a number of men, and included people that were in similar physical condition to me," said Bill. "Everyone in the class can work at their own pace and select a degree of difficulty that best suits them."

About six months ago, Bill decided to focus more on strengthening his core and lower back. He began personal training sessions with his water fitness instructor, Janessa Delaney.

"Working with Janessa has been great. She gives me exercise routines that are geared to my age and condition, and that focus on the areas I want to improve. She has given me the tools and the motivation to come to the rec center and do some exercises on my own. I am even hitting the gym when I am out of town!

I have undoubtedly improved my physical condition. My abs are tighter and I have less flab, my balance has greatly improved, and tying my shoes is less painful. And, I have met a group of people with whom I love to interact."

What's next on Bill's fitness to-do list? Yoga!
