swimIt All Started with a Swimming Lesson
Kevin Costner
At eight years old, Virginia Beach resident Kevin Costner took swimming lessons at Princess Anne Recreation Center. His parents thought it would be a great way for Kevin to learn to swim; little did they know that it would start him on the path of aquatic advancement opportunities.

That first swimming class progressed to more Learn-to-Swim classes and then to the Winter Swim League at Princess Anne. As he advanced through the programs, he started to gain knowledge of water safety, stroke improvement techniques and confidence in the water.

At age 10, Kevin wanted do more at the recreation center than just swim on the team and take lessons, so he volunteered as a Junior Instructor - aiding instructors during Learn-to-Swim classes.  He enjoyed seeing the young students grow and learn with each class.

By the time he was 15 years old, Kevin earned enough volunteer hours to enroll in a lifeguarding course at a reduced rate. At 16, he put his certification to use and was hired as a lifeguard at Princess Anne Recreation Center. Kevin continued to aide swimming lessons in preparation for becoming an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Soon after turning 17, he took the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course, passed all certification requirements and was hired as an instructor with Parks & Recreation.

Kevin is truly a Parks & Rec kid at heart, and his impact to the aquatic program is truly immeasurable. We wish him well on his new journey at George Mason University!
