Hershey's Track & Field Games

Track & Field

Youth age 9 - 14 are invited to put their physical fitness to the test for some friendly competition among peers. We're hosting our annual Hershey's Track & Field Games at First Colonial High School on Friday, April 25. If your child loves to run, jump and throw, get them registered by April 11. Registration is free; download a form here.

 

The top two finishers for each event per age group will advance to the district meets. A rain date is scheduled for May 9. For more information, contact Brian Russell at brussell@VBgov.com

Did your child participate in any of our Out-of-School Time Programs in 2013? If you need a Child Care Spending Report for tax purposes, please complete this online request form and we'll get one mailed to you. Allow 7-10 business days for processing and delivery of your report.

Spring is finally here! Which means our special event season is getting kicked into high gear.

Eggstra Eggstravagant Egg Event
Saturday, April 12 | 9 am - noon
Come out to Bayville Farms Park on Saturday, April 12 for an egg hunt and family fun. Bring your camera for photos with the Easter Bunny. In the event of rain, the hunt will be held indoors at Bayside Recreation Center. 
 

 
American Indian Pow Wow
Saturday, April 26 | 11 am - 6 pm | Mount Trashmore Park
Spirited music, intriguing dance, and appetizing food will have you captivated with Native American culture. Now in its 14th year, this enlightening and colorful event also features authentic and Indian-inspired crafts for sale and display. This event is free and open to the public with onsite parking. Earth Day Celebration
Saturday, May 3 | 11 am - 4 pm | Mount Trashmore Park
Expand your commitment to bettering the environment at our Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, May 3 at Mount Trashmore Park (one of the nation's first recycled landfills) from 11 am to 4 pm. You'll enjoy a variety of exhibits, displays and activities that will give you a chance to discover and explore effective and convenient ways to green your lifestyle. This year's activities include live music by The Futuros and London, AAA Recycling Zone, Dumpster Dive Demonstration, Trashion Show, a green market and children's activities. The Countdown to Spring Break is On!
 
Skateboarding Camp Spring Break is next week for Virginia Beach City Public Schools, and we've got a fun-filled week planned for your child.

We'll have games, tournaments and swimming at the recreation centers, Safety Camp for 3rd graders at Great Neck Park, skateboarding at Mount Trashmore Skate Park, and tennis camp at Owl Creek Tennis Center. View all camps

Don't need a week-long camp? The recreation centers will also have activities during the week. All are free with a membership or day pass.

Apply for the Summer Youth Employment Program

Youth Employment The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides jobs and workplace readiness skills to young people who often lack the skills required to obtain employment and succeed in the workplace. Following their program experience, young people can now include solid work experience and real skills on their resumes. Youth to Leaders is a city-sponsored youth employment program.
 
This summer, youth ages 16 to 21 may be placed in an agency for up to seven weeks, through the Youth to Leaders program. Previous placements have included a variety of city and community agencies such as Parks and Recreation, Human Resources, Emergency Communications and Citizen Services/311 Division, a community radio station and more. These youth may work up to 35 hours a week and will be paid $7.25 an hour. Workplace readiness and financial literacy training will be required for all participants. Download the application
Play with Clay at Pottery & Ceramics Open House
Saturday, April 12 | 9 am - 12 pm | 2289 Lynnhaven Parkway

Have you discovered our Pottery & Ceramics Studio? Tucked away behind our City-Wide Programs Office at 2289 Lynnhaven Parkway, this spacious studio houses everything you need to create beautiful works of art. Classes are offered year-round for all skill levels, including Ceramics, Mosaic Design, Pottery, and our popular Wine Bottle Slumping Workshops. 

During the Open House, you will be able to tour the studio, meet our skilled instructors, and check out demonstrations of various pottery and clay techniques. You can also learn how to decorate glass bottles and see how to make creations from tile, glass and broken dishes. Kids will have the opportunity to get hands on building unique clay creations. 
 
There is no cost to attend, so drop in and see what we have to offer!

Audition for the 2014 Wil.Fa Talent Showcase

Does your son or daughter have a knack for the performing arts? We're looking for singers, dancers, actors, and musicians age 10 - 18 to audition for a chance to compete in our talent showcase and win two tickets to Z104's SHAGGFEST. Auditions will be held at 10 am on May 3 at Williams Farm Recreation Center. Visit any Virginia Beach Recreation Center to register. Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures

Bow Creek Recreation Center is closed for a long-term modernization project.

 

The gym at Bayside Recreation Center will be closed April 21 - May 4 while the divider walls are sanded and repainted.
 
The gym at Princess Anne Recreation Center will be closed May 5 - 18 while the divider walls are sanded and repainted.
 

Don't forget that your membership is good at all Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
