New Services Available at Rec Centers

Nutrition Counseling

For most people, meaningful and long-lasting change doesn't come from exercise alone. What we put into our bodies has a huge impact on how we feel, how much we weigh, and our long-term health. There is so much conflicting information out there about what and how you should eat, it's hard to determine exactly what is right for you. The good news is we now have two Certified Nutrition Specialists to help you analyze your diet and get you on the right path to meet your goals. Appointments are now being taken at Great Neck and Princess Anne Recreation Centers.

Postural Assessments

As a follow up to our posture article, we are pleased to announce that Postural Assessments are now available at Great Neck Recreation Center. These programs not only include a detailed posture evaluation, but also a corrective exercise plan to target any trouble areas. Be on your way to less pain, standing taller and looking more confident.

To request either Nutrition Counseling or a Postural Assessment, please complete our online request form and a trainer will be in touch with you.

Fitness Tip Video Clip: Do the Wobble!

No, we're not talking about the wobble dance! This is about using the wobble board, part of the new fitness stations located along the perimeter trail of Mount Trashmore Park. The gorgeous fall weather we've been experiencing lately has us thinking about outside exercise, so for this month's video tip, Jaq and Esther demonstrate three different options for wobble board squats based on your fitness level. You'll get a great leg workout while challenging your core to keep you balanced.

Don't Forget the Other 'A' Fruit

Apples are usually the first 'A' fruit to come to mind. Some taste buds would also think of apricots. But, don't forget about the avocado. While not as pretty as a big, shiny apple and not as cute and velvety as an apricot, avocados are tough to beat
once you get past their outward appearance

There are health benefits to all fruits, but few have such a wide range of qualities. Avocados provide many key nutrients including vitamins C, E & K, magnesium, potassium and folate. Their healthy fats have a positive influence on heart health, cholesterol level and even inflammation, making avocados a true health powerhouse

Probably best known for it's role in guacamole, the taste of an avocado alone is actually hard to describe. The smooth, buttery texture has a fairly mild taste, but complements other ingredients well in salads and dips, on sandwiches, and even in sushi. You can search through hundreds of avocado recipes here

So the next time you reach for fruit, look past the bumpy green exterior and choose avocados for what makes them special on the inside.
