Put Your Heart into TR!

TR Month
A Sweet Night Dinner and Dance 2013: Photo by Hampton Roads Photography

In February, we celebrated National Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Month. TR is practiced in clinical, residential, and community settings. The profession of therapeutic recreation uses treatment, education, and recreation services to help people with illnesses, disabilities, and other conditions to develop and use their leisure in ways that enhance their health, functional abilities, independence, and quality of life.

Virginia Beach Therapeutic Recreation Programs has five full-time Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) on staff supervising and conducting programs. You can meet our staff here. In order to obtain CTRS certification, candidates must first meet minimum educational and experiential requirements and then pass a computer-based examination. CTRSs are also required to become recertified every five years. CTRSs become recertified by accumulating a combination of work experience, continuing education, and/or retesting. The recertification program was established to ensure the continued and current competence of therapeutic recreation specialists.

Want to get more involved with our Therapeutic Recreation Programs? We are always looking for volunteers and we also offer internship opportunities. Learn more!
