From the Director

If you've been reading the NCAED newsletter for long you're probably like us and have been watching the approaching opening of the new St. Mary's CHI Health Hospital with interest. The ribbon cutting was on October 18th and tours showcased this state-of-the-art facility! The designers attention to detail from lighting in the operating rooms to the amenities of the labor and delivery rooms (which put luxury hotels to shame) were more than impressive. Each room highlighted special amenities distinct to that area of specialty. The facility's designers took special care to incorporate pieces of the former hospital. This included incorporating not only statues but also structural additions in the new chapel such as stained glass windows found in the former chapel. These special additions make our new hospital a cornerstone for blending a bit of the character of the old with the new. If you haven't seen it, be sure to stop in.

This has been an exceptionally busy construction season for Nebraska City, with many of the projects wrapping up and more in the works. If you have a chance, check out many of the completed projects in downtown Nebraska City with funding from LB 840. In addition to those there are other projects in the works including the small addition to the east side of Nebraska City's Cargill facility. A special Thank you to our businesses for your continued investment in Nebraska City and Otoe County.

Downtown Assistance Funding Program

Do you currently own a business building on Central Avenue between 4th street and 15th Street? Or do you have your eye on a building where you would like to open up a business but it needs repairs? Through the Nebraska City LB 840 program's Downtown District Assistance, some of those repairs or improvements may be eligible for grant funding.

To start, you'll need to have a list of the needed modifications and the associated costs. For repairs that do not qualify for grant funds, they may be eligible through the traditional LB840 loan program. Just call 402-873-4293 to set up an appointment to discuss your project and it's needs.

Many volunteers are needed to make the Nebraska City First Lego League State Qualifying Tournament on January 17th a success.  There is a job for everyone....whether you are into robotics or not!  Here's a list of Volunteer Positions.

To volunteer, create a user account on the FIRST Volunteer Information and Matching System (VIMS). The FIRST VIMS will guide you through:

  • creating a FIRST volunteer user account
  • indicating the event in which you would like to volunteer (Pick First Lego League at Nebraska City on January 17th please!)
  • selecting a preferred volunteer position

New this year, all volunteers must be screened through the FIRST Youth Protection Program. Once logged into the FIRST VIMS, volunteers will be linked to the Verified Volunteers system; you do not need to provide your social security number nor pay the $2.50 to volunteer for the Nebraska FIRST Program. If you have questions you can call Deb Weitzenkamp at 402-873-3166.

Thank you for volunteering to make a difference in the lives of our youth!

Sincerely,
