Hidden Gems in Otoe County
This months "Hidden Gem" was discovered right here in Nebraska City brewing on the corner of 11th and Central Ave.
VF Golden Coffee, has just opened up in downtown Nebraska City at 1124 Central Avenue. Owner Fernando Vanegas and his wife can be found in the shop daily serving their customers with a smile. Fernando's 30 years in the coffee industry brings a new level of 'coffee expertise' to main street Nebraska City. Fernando and Olga roast the fresh coffee beans imported direct from Columbia first thing each morning. The fresh roasted beans are then ground on site to provide the freshest coffee in town. VF Golden offers other options for the non coffee drinker from juices, smoothies to Chai Tea. The non coffee fruit drinks are made with fresh fruits while you wait. My personal favorite is the lime Cream.

From the Director:
Site of the new business Central Apple Market
In today's environment and especially in small communities, economic development takes on many faces. Such is the case in Nebraska City and Otoe County. On Saturday June 6th we will be celebrating the official "passing of the key" for a building in downtown Nebraska City to a business new to Nebraska City. Union Orchard, has expanded their operation into downtown Nebraska City with this building purchase; It will be Central Apple Market. This came to fruition because of the City's LB 840 fund providing a low interest loan, grant funds provided through Nebraska City's new Downtown District Assistance Program and the assistance of Nebraska City Economic Development Foundation. It was through this collaborative effort that we were able to fill a building that had been setting empty for a couple years as well as add a new venue to the downtown business district of Nebraska City that is currently not offered. The timing for this is very strategic as the closure of Highway 75 has restricted the flow of traffic to Union Orchard, just south of Union Nebraska. Central Apple Market owners, Dr. Terry and Carla Wostrel are targeting an opening prior to Apple Jack Celebration in Nebraska City (September 20th). The Central Apple Market will offer Nebraska grown fresh fruit and produce, preserves, sweet ciders and bakery items. They will also have a tasting Room offering Nebraska Wines and Hard Cider. We are excited that Central Apple Market will be in keeping with the historic uniqueness of Nebraska City as well as our apple heritage.

NCAEDC Partner Spotlight

New Tech Construction Co. & Drilling Co.
Our spotlight Partner business is known by many but not known by all, so we thought you might want to know how even a small company can become a big company in a small town. New Tech Construction Co. located 713 Central Ave., in Nebraska City, NE has come a long way since Jack Olson started it in 1990. Jack worked for many years for several underground construction businesses and became exhausted and tired of working 80 to 90 hours a week and never getting anywhere. So, Jack purchased some equipment and started his own underground construction company. Quality workmanship, reliability and honesty was the driving force behind their success. Today with over 22 drill rigs from the D-6 Navigator to the the Vermeer 200 x 300, New Tech Construction Co. and Drilling Co. is known as one of the top and most trustworthy underground construction/drilling companies in the United States. New Tech handles project management and construction for small and large jobs in Gas, Oil, and Water Piplelines, Fiber Optic Construction, Underground Electrical, Vertical/Horizontal Geothermal Well Installation, CATV Outside Plant Operations and Complete Outside Telecommunications Plant Operations.
When asked, "what makes your business different from your competitors"? Jack stated "Reliability, Experience, and Honesty". And the one thing Jack said he would want people to know about his company is "we do what we say we will do and our quality of work shows it." So now when you drive down the road anywhere in the country and you see underground drilling and pipeline construction, think of our big company in a small town, New Tech Construction Co. & Drilling Company - a true entrepreneurial story. Nebraska City and Otoe County is proud to have them as one of our successful businesses.

Making the Hiring Process Easier than Ever Before
(Great examples of what you will find in our
"Tools for Business" section of our website)
Know Who You Want to Hire: An Interactive Hiring Tool: Hiring is one of the toughest elements of small business management. Determining the job descriptions, duties, and talent a business needs to succeed, then finding the time and know-how to recruit these people, stymies many entrepreneurs. Successful hiring can be expensive and time consuming. Unsuccessful hiring can be disastrous to a company's health.
What makes hiring even more challenging than bookkeeping, business planning, or many other business challenges is that help with the hiring process is difficult to find. Recruiters can be expensive, and may not always have the interests of your business at heart. Books can provide some guidance, but can't be customized. Use this tool and create an interview questionnaire reflective of the person you want to hire. Pretty cool stuff. Read on:
Know Who you Want to Hire - Interactive Hiring Tool
Sample Job Description: Creating a position description is a key step in the hiring process. You must be able to accurately describe what a new employee will do in order to decide how to divide the work between you and your employee. A position description is also helpful in evaluating whether you need a full-time employee or a part-timer. It can form the basis of advertisements that you run, and can be used to present a clear picture of the job to job applicants. Finally, it can play a part in evaluating whether an employee has met the expectations you set. Read on: Sample Job Description Form
Do you Know how to Pick Them:
Your small business is growing, the market has a need for the product or service you're selling, and you're bringing in employees to expand your business. What could possibly go wrong? The answer is, a lot, if you don't hire the right people. Read on:
Tips for Successful Interviewing:
When you're hiring employees for your small business, it's vital to use the interview process to identify the most qualified candidates for your company. Successful interviewing is similar to many other "communications" skills - it's a matter of asking the right questions, listening to the answers, and getting candidates to talk honestly about their abilities and attitudes. The good news is that candidates are predisposed to be open about themselves, so your challenge is to ask questions that guide them to the information you need to make a hiring decision. Use the tips below to hone your job interview talents. Read on:
