Host Families Needed

The World Language Department is looking for interested families to host five additional students that will visit from Argentina in April 2014. A total of eight students from Colegio Jesus Maria will be coming with a chaperone, as part of our Argentina Exchange Program.  A host family is asked to provide hospitality during their two week stay, transportation to and from school, and a willingness to include the student in family activities. For more information, contact Mrs. Herbert at [email protected] or Ms. Azcue at [email protected]Please complete the form for hosting if you would like to participate as a host family. Good News

Fontbonne students, under the guidance of Fontbonne Academy alumna, Mary Ellen Callahan '09 and teacher at Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester, and organized through the Office of Mission and Ministry, volunteered at Mother Caroline for a library service project.  The students, many of them Mother Caroline alumnae, helped to reorganize and clean the school's library.  The project was quite successful and the library is ready to open and welcome Mother Caroline students.  Thank you to alumna, Mary Ellen Callahan, Mrs. Denning, and to all of the Fontbonne student volunteers.

Members of our National Honor Society (NHS), under the direction of moderator, Mrs. Herbert, spent much of the day on Saturday, October 26, at Brookview House in Dorchester.  Brookview House is a transitional community which houses women and children who were homeless.  It offers on the job training for the women residents and multiple services for the children.  The NHS students spent the day with the children making, pizza, decorating pumpkins, and engaging them in leadership activities.  The proceeds of the NHS Coffee House in January will go to support Brookview House and they are planning another activity with Brookview House during second semester. Thank you to Mrs. Herbert and the members of NHS for sponsoring such a worthwhile event.

Thank you to senior Theology teacher, Mr. Waters, for organizing and chaperoning a trip to the Museum of Science to view the new IMAX film, "Jerusalem," followed by a tour of the New England Holocaust Memorial on Sunday, October 27. The seniors are studying the impact of intolerance in their Social Justice classes.  After the film and the tour, the students had the opportunity to talk about their experience over lunch at Bertucci's.

Halloween is always an exciting day at Fontbonne.  As students were arriving to school on Thursday morning, they were greeted by members of the Spirit Committee with Halloween signs and candy treats. Students and adults were dressed in a myriad of costumes.  The student in the "best" costume in each homeroom was sent to the foyer where the "best" costume for each level was determined by a panel of adult learning community judges.  The overall "best" costume was then chosen. This year's winners are: grade 9, Lauren Critelli (dressed as a chicken); grade 10, Cecilia Moreira (Flash superhero); grade 11, Jiangnan (Nancy) Bian (Geisha girl); and grade 12, Elizabeth Magnuson (Starbucks cup).  The overall "best" costume went to Elizabeth Magnuson.  While the student judging was going on in the foyer the Spirit Committee leaders were choosing the adult "best" costume.  This year winner was Mrs. Spignesi, who dressed as Cleopatra.  Each homeroom with 100% participation will receive treats, courtesy of Student Council, in their homeroom next week.  Thank you to the members of the Spirit Committee and Student Council for planning such a fun day.

Fontbonne students and adults gathered for our All Saints' Day liturgy in the auditorium on Friday afternoon, November 1.  The celebrant was Fr. Javier Montes, S.J. from Boston College.  The music ministers, readers, gift bearers and Eucharistic ministers were members of the Senior Class, as the class of 2014 kicked off their month on Friday.  Thank you to Mrs. Denning for planning the liturgy.
