Summer Service Hours

Students may use any hours of community service that are earned over the upcoming summer vacation toward their 2013-2014 Fontbonne service responsibility. Students are reminded to seek out service sites that fit the guidelines of the service program.

Examples of service may include work with the elderly, children, the homeless, those with special needs or those who are infirm. Placements might include hospitals, hospices, churches, non-profit summer camp programs, food pantries, shelters, etc. As a reminder, service should not be done for one's family members and service may not be done for a for-profit business or organization that would typically pay someone to perform that work.

Ms. Denning has information on agencies in the area that are looking for summer volunteers. Any student who would like some guidance finding a summer service opportunity should make an appointment to meet with her as soon as possible. Ms. Denning will not be available during the week of June 17-21 but will be available throughout the summer for consultation or approval of service sites.

Good News

On Wednesday, May 29, eighteen recent Fontbonne grads, representing seventeen colleges and universities, returned to talk to sophomores and juniors about their college choices at an Alumnae College Fair in the Foyer. The alums discussed the colleges they are attending and the decision process that got them there.  Then the floor was opened for questions. This was a great opportunity for current students to ask girls, who were recently in their shoes, what the college experience has been like, what they would have done differently, and how they handled applying to college, SATs, etc. One thing rang loud and clear: all the alums felt more than prepared because of their experience here at Fontbonne. Thank you to Alumnae Coordinator, Mrs. Jackie McKenna, and Guidance Counselors, Mrs. Peggy Lamb and Mrs. Jill Libby for coordinating the event.

Despite the sweltering heat, Fontbonne was hopping the evening of Saturday, June 1, because of the All-Alumnae Reunion celebrating the graduates of the 3s and 8s. The gathering began with liturgy at 4 p.m. in the Fontbonne Convent Chapel celebrated by Rev. Thomas Foley and enhanced by the beautiful singing of our Select Chorus. Thank you to Mrs. Carol Fortier, director, and Mr. Doug Anderson, accompanist, for showcasing our students. Following the liturgy, participants walked across campus to the welcoming foyer where a group of student ambassadors was waiting to greet them. Some took tours of the building to see Fontbonne as she is today, others enjoyed the food and beverages provided by Fasano's Caterers, and many were glad to see their former teachers-Sisters of St. Joseph who taught in years past and current faculty members. Mostly, the alums were just glad to be together again, chatting with friends about their time at Fontbonne and catching up with the present. The evening included the annual Women of Courage Awards, which were given to Maureen Gemma '78, Rosemarie Foley '82, Barbara Ryan '98 and Liz Conley '03 for their constant support of Fontbonne in their time, treasure and talent, and for upholding the values of a Fontbonne woman.
