The 2013 Graduation Honors Speakers were announced on April 26. In February, senior candidates with a 3.5 G.P.A. and above were invited to participate in the Honor Speaker selection process. Eight candidates, Julia Butts, Caroline Cabral, Tammy Chen, Eliza McDonald, Kathleen Moran, Maretta Morovitz, Rebecca Simmons, and Cindy Truong, chose to participate. They submitted a portfolio which included an essay describing their graduation message to their classmates, reflective answers to questions regarding the 4Rs, and affirmation of their contributions to life at Fontbonne and beyond. The candidates were interviewed by members of the Adult Learning Community and senior Hannah Page, who was chosen by the senior class. In addition, the senior class and the faculty voted. The process is a rigorous one. Congratulations to Eliza McDonald and Maretta Morovitz, who will be our Honors Speakers at this year's graduation, and to Julia Butts, who was chosen as the alternate.
Each year a senior is chosen by her class to be the Baccalaureate Speaker. The student is recognized by her peers as the one who best represents the spirit of the class. This year Mary Kelly will be addressing the Class of 2013 after the Baccalaureate Liturgy on Tuesday May 21.
Our annual celebration of the Arts was held in the afternoon this year on Sunday April 28. As always, many and various talents were featured. To begin, we had a beautiful display of art and photography from our AP and advanced art students. Thank you to their teacher Mrs. Nikki Robertson. Also on exhibit were the works of Digital Photography and Music Composition students. Thanks to their teacher Mr. Doug Anderson. The concert portion featured the Instrumental Ensemble, Jazz Choir, Select Chorus, and a number of soloists under the direction of Mr. Doug Anderson and Mrs. Carol Fortier. Congratulations and thank you to everyone for a beautiful afternoon.
Monday April 29 the Jesuit Excellence Tour (JET), representing 18 Jesuit colleges and universities from around the country, visited Fontbonne Academy from 1:30-2:30 p.m. All unscheduled juniors and sophomores were invited to come to the foyer during period 7, and then were joined by their classmates at 2:05. Thank you to the members of the Guidance Department-Mrs. Maura Spignesi, Mrs. Peggy Lamb, Mrs. Jill Libby, and Sister Lorraine-for hosting this opportunity for our students.
The International Culture Club hosted a mini international festival in the foyer on a beautiful spring afternoon Wednesday May 1. Many students shared aspects of their culture: singing, dancing, poetry, instrumental music, pictures, and most importantly, food. The foyer was decorated with all the flags representing the cultural heritage of the Fontbonne community. Congratulations to club moderator Mrs. Celeste Linardi and to the members and officers of the International Culture Club for organizing this special celebration.
The annual Mother Daughter Dinner, hosted by the Student Council, was held on May 2 at Great Pond Hall in Braintree. The event allows all Fontbonne students to celebrate their mothers (or mother figures) in a special way. Entertainment was provided by hypnotist Frank Santos, Jr. As always the seniors honored their moms with a special tribute. The evening was filled with laughter and sentimental memories. Thank you to moderator Ms. Julie Leonard and the Student Council officers for their hard work in organizing the evening and to all the members of Student Council for their assistance.
On Friday, May 3, the members of the Fontbonne community bid farewell to the exchange students from Argentina who had been with us during the two weeks following April vacation. This year a group of six enthusiastic young women from Argentina shared the life of Fontbonne Academy with thirteen of our own students. Some provided lodging, others hosted the students during the school day. From their smiling faces, it was clear our visitors had a rewarding experience. Thank you to Ms. Maria Azcue, the coordinator of the exchange program, and Mrs. Anke Herbert, the chairperson of the World Language Department, for all they did to coordinate the exchange. In June the Fontbonne contingent will be heading to Argentina for part two of the exchange.
