Good News
Last week, freshwoman, Laurie Brutus, participated in a Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. which included being an invited guest at the Inauguration of Barack Obama. Two thousand students from all over the world convened in D.C. to participate in leadership training and political awareness activities. Prior to the trip, the students were asked to submit questions for guest speaker, Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush. Twenty four students including Laurie, whose questions for Ms. Rice were chosen, had the opportunity to meet with the former Secretary of State.
Four of our students, senior Ashley Jean, junior, Love Rhaldyan Aridou, and sophomores, Caitlyn Hansbury and Emily Song marched in the annual Pilgrimage for Life in Washington, D. C. , on Friday, January 25. These young women joined hundreds of students from the Archdiocese of Boston and thousands more from across the United States for the purpose of being witnesses to life and the dignity of the human person. Thank you to Ashley Jean for helping Mrs. Denning, our Director of Mission and Ministry, organize the trip as part of her Social Justice Project. Special thanks to Ashley's mother, Mrs. Jean, for chaperoning our students.
Seven of our Art students were recognized at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Fair last week. Juniors, Anne Callahan, Morgan McKenna, Tianna Szeto and senior Kim Huntress received Honorable Mention in Painting. Senior Cindy Truong received an Honorable Mention in Sculpture. Yuze Wu received a Silver Key in Painting and juniors, Jana Griffis and Katie Sorgman received Gold Keys in Painting. The "key" winners will receive their awards at John Hancock Hall in March. The "key" winners will also have their art displayed at the Transportation Building in Boston from February 13 through April 20. Congratulations to our students and their Art teacher, Mrs. Robertson.
Senior Cindy Truong was also recognized with a Silver Key in Creative Writing at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Fair. This year is only the fourth year that our region has included Creative Writing. Cindy will be awarded the Silver Key at John Hancock Hall in Boston for her Science Fiction story. Congratulations to Cindy and thank you to Ms. Ryan, Chairperson of the English Department, for sponsoring Cindy's writing submission.
The Fontbonne Academy community celebrated Catholic Schools Week on Wednesday, January 30. We gathered to worship together in recognition of how we, as a Catholic School, continue to "Raise the Standards". Thank you to Fr. Chris Hickey from St. Mary's in Hanover, for presiding at our liturgy. Thank you to Mrs. Denning and the student readers, gift bearers and Eucharistic Ministers. Thank you also to Mrs. Fortier for directing our choral students and Mr. Anderson for accompanying them.
A group of Revolutionary War re-enactors, as British soldiers, came to Fontbonne in full uniform after school Thursday, January 31. They spoke about what the role of the British soldier was in America during the Revolutionary time and what they do as re-enactors. An enthusiastic group of students and adults had many questions for the visitors. Thank you to Ms. Leonard of the Social Studies Department for arranging this unique opportunity.
