LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Harkey's bill to remove accountability for bad design and behavior remains alive

AB 738 (Harkey) was modestly amended after pressure from members of the California Bicycle Coalition -- thanks! -- but the new version isn't much better. It still
provides complete immunity to a public entity or an elected official of that entity for an injury they cause to a bicyclist on a roadway if that roadway has a bike lane. Not only does it eliminate the opportunity for compensation for victims, it also eliminates the biggest incentive for local agencies to apply reasonable safety standards when they design bike facilities. Please sign this petition to join the campaign against AB 738.

CalBike's Better Bikeways campaign introduces legislation

AB 1193 will allow more local control over which design standards to consult for bicycles on local streets, in order to permit protected bikeways and other facilities that are proven to increase ridership and safety. You can read a complete update about the bill and download a factsheet on our better bikeways campaign page.

AROUND THE STATE

70 CALIFORNIANS WENT TO D.C.: California was well represented at the National Bike Summit in Washington D.C. earlier this month. Some of us thought it was one of the best summits ever, with more diverse participation than we've usually seen at the summit, including a presentation by California's own Jenna Burton, founder of Red Bike & Green.
