LEGISLATION SESSION STARTS WITH TROUBLE
Some very good bike bills and at least one very dangerous one start the session.
CalBike
  1. champions two very good bills -- AB 184, a critical reform of the statue of limitations in hit-and-run cases, and AB 1193, a bill to improve upon last year's steps toward permitting better bikeway design. And we are fighting a very bad bill. AB 738 provides immunity for public entities and their employees for consequences of an injury caused to someone riding a bicycle. Help stop AB738 by clicking on the link to the right.
With the help of our excellent lobbyists, Platinum Advisors, we are working on these and about other six legislative efforts to improve conditions for bicycling in California.

INCREASING FUNDING FOR BIKE INFRASTRUCTURE
Secretary hints at more funding for bicycling & walking.

Business Transportation & Housing Agency Brian Kelly hinted at a meeting hosted by the Speaker's office last Wednesday in Sacramento that revenues from the cap-and-trade auction could augment the Active Transportation account. Total funding could be "$150 million or more" up from the currently proposed level of $134 million. This is an increase in bike/ped spending over previous years, but it's still far short of the need. AROUND THE STATE
SAN DIEGO: San Diego is the latest big city to join the bandwagon of Open Streets Events. Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 18 for CicloSDias!

SAN FRANCISCO: The state's most bicycle-friendly (sort-of) big city is upping the ante. A new strategy [pdf] lays out a an impressive proposal to increase bicycling to 10% of all trips. It's a carefully thought out strategy, with analysis of needs, comparison to the world's most bicycle-friendly cities, and a sober assessment of the cost estimated to be about $227 million.
