Drivers Equipment Raffle
|
As some of you may know my racing days are over but some of my gear is still too young, and in too good of condition, to also retire. So I have put together a kit, or maybe a starter kit, of the good stuff that can be used as a raffle in order to raise some funds for the workers which make the racing days possible. The bag or cool shirt are worth at least five dollars. Thanks for your help, Ray Kollock

Midwestern Council was represented at the 9th Annual Race & Performance Expo which ran February 20th - 21st at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois. This is our 9th year exhibiting at this event as it is an excellent opportunity to promote our club to individuals who already have an interest in car racing; however are unaware of the multiple opportunities within Midwestern Council.
Although the venue used for the first 8 years afforded us opportunities to spread the word about our club's awesome Drivers Schools, HSAX, HPDE, Current era and Vintage/Historic Wheel-to-Wheel programs, and Enduro Series, its layout had booths in 3 different rooms between 2 different buildings. If attendees were aware the show spanned a second site they were offered shuttle services between buildings. Renaissance Schaumburg increased booth traffic by its capability to hold the entire Expo in 1 mammoth room. The suitable weather this year didn't hurt either.
I want to thank the members who volunteered to give up part or all of their weekend to man the booth this year:
Marcell Berkhout
Dave Bralich
Gary Cooke
Dan Gilman
Bruce Gracz
Mitch Lelito
John Lewis
Larry Noble
Michael Palmer
Rob Roderick
Gus Rubio
Lynn Serra
David Stockwell
Also, a hardy thank you to the throngs of other members who stopped by the booth to give us support.

Gus Rubio, Dave Bralich, and Gary Cooke
|
And a special thank you to: Gus Rubio who brought his HSAX/daily driver and Gary Cooke who brought his W2W Porsche. To give you some insight into the dedication Gus has to our club - since Gus' HSAX car is also his daily driver once he brought the car to the booth on Thursday he then had to find a way home since he does not trailer his vehicle. No problem! (I should mention at this time that both Gus and Gary were asked to create a poster or handout that described their vehicle and covered the most frequently asked questions car show attendees might ask.) Gary Cooke, who was meeting Gus in Schaumburg to get the cars squeezed in to the booth, offered to give him a ride home. Psych! Gary realized that there was no room in his car because of the poster, so Gus ended up ON THE BUS! The next time you see Gary suggest he get a roof rack...for the poster, of course.

Our booth was located near the Engine Building Challenge. High School teams from around the nation compete at several locations. Those teams breaking down and rebuilding an engine in less than 35 minutes, using only hand tools, advance to the Nationals. Members of the National winning team can earn tens of thousands of dollars toward further education. The teams are assessed time penalties for things such as dropping parts or tools, stepping outside the work area, incorrect build, or cursing. An opportunistic Bruce Gracz was seen working the crowd surrounding the Challenge handing out High Performance Driver Education flyers with coupons. Over the 2 days of the show we made a lot of good contacts - both vendor and attendee. We commented on the large number of "quality" attendees that stopped at the booth; asking the right type of question, building the right type of car. So watch for new competitors in the paddock and make them feel welcome. Also, watch for additional member benefits on our website coming up soon.
