A beautiful fun-filled brisk autumn weekend for our 43rd annual Loooong Race marked the end of our 2013 championship season. Congratulations to everyone who made it out to compete this year. This is a sport that pits a myriad of challenges against drivers & crews, as much off the track as on. Sometimes just having the car ready or making it through an event is a win in and of itself. I've only been doing this a few years, but I've learned this can be a challenging, frustrating, stressful, expensive little hobby... but when I'm at the track, there is nowhere else I'd rather be. On track... that's living, that's our moment... when the adrenaline's rushing & you are in peak form pushing the limits of your car and yourself, learning, improving... shaving tenths, making the perfect pass, hammering down the straight, and diving into corners. And when the season's over, our work doesn't end there. There's maintenance to be done, performance to review & planning improvements for next season... because before you know it, it'll be time to heat up some rubber again.
We also have our annual awards banquet to look forward to in the off season. I love dressing up & celebrating with my MC family. I've always had a lot of fun, but what I think is really great is that it gives Race Staff their time to shine as we congratulate (and thank) them for their support and service. I also look forward to the MCWF show. For those that don't know, the CFF drivers have a traveling trophy that is presented WWF style. I was amazed (my first banquet, my first year) by their enthusiasm and knew right then & there that I was in the right club! So, save the date for the 2013 MCSCC Awards Banquet held January 11th, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza in Madison, WI. More info will follow as it becomes available.
Oh! And speaking of getting ready for next year... 2014 medical and license forms have been posted to Forms & Files on the website.
Until we race again,
Michele Salamun Klaxon Editor

Vintage - Historic Update
by John Saccameno

Over the past few seasons I have been working on getting MCSCC accepted into the Vintage Motorsports Council. The VMC is made up of 27 vintage racing sanctioning bodies around the US and Canada. VSCDA, SVRA, and HSR being notable within the Midwest. Their mission, in general, is not to provide rules for vintage racing, but act as an advisory, support and educational organization. They do not legislate rules, but offer a forum to discuss new ideas and to help solve problems inherent to vintage racing. Feel free to go the attached link for additional information.
Our inclusion in the group will give MCSCC national and regional exposure to the members of the participating clubs, allow us access to shared information as to vintage drivers currently on probation or suspended, and give us visibility into participation trends in North America. VMC also supports and issues a national vintage racing license which allows members to race within sanctioning bodies which may not support a true competition license. Our membership will have zero impact on our current GCR. VMC does not legislate or act as a sanctioning body. Our current rule set will remain intact unless changed within MCSCC.
Our first in-person meeting was in Rosemont on November 9th and proved to be most informative and generally successful. Lynn Serra and I attended as MCSCC representatives and presented our request. As MCSCC is not primarily a "vintage racing" organization, there are some issues to address, but I look forward to working through them with the VMC board and have an affiliation in hand for the 2014 season.

Full-Throttle Disbanding

After what seems like about 20 years, (pretty close, actually!) we are both happy and a little sad to announce that 2013 will be the final season for the Full Throttle Racing Club. There are a number of reasons, not the least of which is that since the club was founded there have been a lot of births, weddings (and divorces), job changes, passings, relocations, and other factors that have changed the makeup of the club such that it just doesn't have the support that it once did. The good news is that the purpose the club was formed in the first place has actually been achieved. Midwestern Council back in the mid 90's was not a fun place to be for some of us. New ideas and concepts were generally ignored with the response "but that's the way it's always been." Well, we aimed to change that, and we would like to think that in some respects we succeeded. We introduced victory lane celebrations, champagne, trophies that were something more than a flat hunk of wood with a sticker on it, worker prizes, contingency awards, goodie bags, sponsors, local media coverage, track touring, cool pace cars, and most importantly, a general sense that RACING WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN. Looking at the Midwestern Council events now, you can see that theme at nearly every event. The races are much more imaginative and varied than ever before. We would like to think that in some small way that is the legacy Full Throttle has left for the rest of Midwestern Council. In order to ease the transition to another club, Full Throttle is paying every member's dues for the club of their choice for the 2014 season. The good news for the other clubs is that they will be gaining some terrific new members. In the meantime, we are in the process of using the money in the treasury to help buy a bunch of brand new equipment for a number of specialties, so Full Throttle will live on helping support Midwestern Council in the future.
Thanks to all the clubs for their help and support over the years,
Full Throttle Racing Club, Ltd.

Good News from Ray Jackson

Way back in May I sent the email below (this is a shortened version obviously) to all of you, and thought I had sent at least one more note after this one. Shortly after this note, I decided to put my news on Caring Bridge that any of you could access whenever you wanted to, but I may not have sent an email to you guys to let you know about that. If so, I apologize, I thought you were all reading about my experience (if you wanted to) on Caring Bridge. That's why there have been no updates since then, ones that I emailed anyway.
So what is Caring Bridge? There may be some of you who are not familiar with it, so I'll give the short version. It is a free web site for sharing news with friends and family, typically used by people with medical problems. I started my site in mid-May, telling about my experiences with my leukemia from about a year ago. The site is at caringbridge.org, and my site name is "rayjacksonmadison", which you have to enter to visit it. You will have to register with your name and email address to access many of the individual sites. There are security options on each site, I have chosen the medium privacy setting that requires you to sign up and log in, but no passwords required. That one would allow me to block anyone's access if I felt it necessary.
So to answer [someone's] question, I'll tell you the short version of the events since the beginning of May.
The potential donor for my stem cell transplant came through after all, and I had my transplant on July 3rd, after four days of chemo and three rest days. I stayed in the hospital until July 23rd, and have been recuperating at home ever since. By now I am feeling pretty good, almost normal, but it hasn't all been so easy. Even now I have no stamina, it still surprises me how little exertion it takes to be completely exhausted. But I have passed the 100 day mark, considered a major milestone. Now it's mostly just a matter of regaining my strength and resuming a "normal" life again. There is still a possibility of Graft Versus Host Disease, the biggest risk still out there, but so far there has been no sight of it.
Bonnie is doing well too. She had surgery to patch up some problems in her abdomen on June 10th, just two weeks before I entered the hospital. So really she is still recovering from that, plus acting as my caregiver all this time.
For more details, go read my Caring Bridge site. It's all there, and I am planning a couple of new entries this week.

We still have a few vacant positions in need of dedicated members. It is important to our organization that all open positions be filled so that our events can be run as smoothly as possible. If you can help, please email racestaff@mcscc.org to volunteer. Thanks!
HSAX Director (John Churchill will continue as Acting Director until a new one is found.)
HSAX Starters (We would like to have a team of starters in place for HSAX events. Starters who are also HSAX participants are still able to race and will receive priority access to the track for scheduled Practice Sessions and Timed Runs.)
