Vision statement
|
Jesus in Love supports lesbian, gay, bi trans and queer (LGBTQ) spirituality, with an emphasis on art and literature. It promotes artistic and religious freedom and teaches love for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It is based on these beliefs: God loves all people, including sexual minorities. The creative process is sacred. The queer visions, especially the gay Jesus and LGBT saints, will free people to experience the divine in new ways and lead to a more just world.
Jesus in Love was founded by lesbian Christian author Kittredge Cherry as her personal gift to the world.

Uganda Martyrs raise questions on homosexuality, religion and LGBT rights
Tough questions about homosexuality, religion and LGBT rights are raised by the Uganda Martyrs whose feast day is today (June 3).
Forty-five Ugandan male pages refused to have sex with their king after they converted to Christianity in 1886 -- so he executed them. They were canonized by the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, leaving some truths hidden by their halos.
The Uganda Martyrs are important now with Uganda at the center of worldwide debate on homosexuality. How can the story be interpreted so that LGBT Ugandans have equal access to justice... and to God? More info

Saints of Stonewall inspire LGBT justice
LGBT people fought back against police harassment in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, launching the LGBT liberation movement. Their rebellion against government persecution of homosexuality is celebrated around the world during June as LGBT Pride Month. The Stonewall Uprising continues to inspire liberation movements and a variety of artworks. More info: Overview Artist interview(Credit: Detail from Stonewall painting by Sandow Birk) |
Joan of Arc: Cross-dressing warrior-saint
Joan of Arc was a cross-dressing teenage warrior who led the medieval French army to victory. This queer icon and girl-power hero was killed for wearing men's clothing by the church that later made her a saint.
Joan's belief that God was the source of her gender-bending queerness makes her an especially inspiring role model for LGBT people of faith. More info

Book explores religious role of gay bars

"Baby, You Are My Religion: Women, Gay Bars, and Theology Before Stonewall," a new book by scholar Marie Cartier, argues that gay bars played a religious role in the 20th century.
Like churches, gay bars created community and hosted weddings, funerals, etc. They provided space for Metropolitan Community Churches and other queer faith groups. More info

Rosa Bonheur: Queer painter honored "androgyne Christ" I close with a new version of the "Hail Mary" prayer by Rosa Bonheur, 19th-century artist and cross-dresser:
"Hail, O earth full of grace, the living God is with you. Blessed are you among all the planets, the fruit of your womb is our salvation. Holy earth, mother of love, pour out your grace on those who suffer, now and in our divine transformation." |
