Fullerton College Open Forums: Proposed Building Locations to be Discussed

President's Forum

In an effort to encourage communication and strengthen teamwork across campus, President Rajen Vurdien has scheduled a series of open forums. The president encourages all students, faculty and staff to attend this monthly forum. The next open forum is today from 2-3 p.m. in room 224. SSC Seeking Student Success Ideas

The Student Success Committee is seeking ideas for 2015-2016 to promote student success. The committee welcomes input from all members of the campus community. The mission of the SSC is to discuss, prioritize, and recommend actions to support student success. Most recently, the committee has supported initiatives such as supplemental instruction, the new faculty seminar, Jump Start to College, evaluation of student success programs, and Habits of Mind. Please send any ideas to your representative on the committee or Lynette Pratt.

 

Career Trends in Criminal Justice

A panel discussion exploring careers in the criminal justice fields will be presented on March 24 at 3 p.m. in room 728. The event is open to all students, alumni, and the community. Please, register online.

 

Worldfest Looking for Participants

On April 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Fullerton College will host its 4th annual Worldfest. Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate with village table displays, the world stage, and the chalk art contest. More information is available on the Cadena Center website. The deadline to apply for Worldfest participation is April 9 at 5 p.m.

 

Habits of Mind Discusses 'The Pact' 

The campus community is invited to a group discussion of the novel, The Pact: Three Young Men Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream, and how the novel related to Habits of Mind. The event will take place on March 18 at 3:30 p.m. in rooms 224-6. Participants are encouraged to bring their copy of the book and come prepared to discuss it. Read more...

  

FC Hosts Open Forums

Following the passage of Measure J, Fullerton College is now embarking on a comprehensive planning process that will determine the location and sequencing of building and renovation projects on its campus. As an initial step in this planning, the college is seeking input from the campus community and the community at-large at a series of open forums scheduled through the middle of April. Coffee with Trustees & Chancellor Rescheduled

The Coffee with the Board of Trustees and Chancellor scheduled for today has been rescheduled to May 11 from 9-10 a.m. in room 227. Cypress College and the School of Continuing Education will hold their events on April 20 at 3 p.m. in Cypress College's complex room 414 and May 7 at 9 a.m. at the  Anaheim campus in rooms 105-107.

 

Debate Team Takes Top Leads

Fullerton College's debaters brought home multiple awards at the National Educational Debate Association National Championship in Dayton, Ohio. The team of Joseph Phillips and Rachel Romo are national champions in Novice Policy Debate, defeating Capital University of Columbus, Ohio in the finals. Joe Phillips also captured top speaker award, with his partner, Rachel Romo third top speaker. In Open Division policy debate, Zach Turner and Kitiny Phumchun were third overall. Teammates Sarah Benedict and Michael Wu were fourth overall. Turner also won fourth top-speaker award. The team's outstanding performances enabled them to finish second in overall Sweepstakes. Fullerton College was also recognized as the top new NEDA program in the nation. The team flies back home to California on Sunday.

Campus tours of CSU Fullerton and CSU Dominguez Hills

On March 20 from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m., the Transfer Center will tour both Cal State campuses. Please bring good walking shoes and money for lunch. Sign up today in the Cadena Transfer Center, room 212. There is a tour fee of $5. For more information, contact the Transfer Center.

Asian and Pacific Islander Forum

The Cadena Cultural Center, Asian & Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Association, and Ethnic Studies Department are hosting the 4th annual Asian & Pacific Islander Forum. Faculty and staff will be engaging students in an interactive discussion on various topics of interest to our API communities. The forum will be on March 25 from 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in room 224


 

Massage Therapy Program Guest Lecture

The FC Massage Therapy program is sponsoring a special guest lecture by author and international lecturer James Waslaski. Waslaski will present a workshop on Integrated Manual Therapy to Eliminate Multiple Nerve Crush Phenomenon on Sunday, April 19. Thomas Campbell and artwork

Thomas Campbell is a painter, sculpture, photographer, and filmmaker whose work combines graphic qualities with a rich expressionism to explore essential questions of human nature. Artwork selected for the gallery exhibition will include pieces from private collections as well as new works available for purchase. More information can be found here.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a tribute to the delightfully frothy Broadway musicals of the 1920's but with a contemporary twist. As a traditional song and dance show, the production is a valentine to the glory days of a bygone era of musical theatre.

 

Home Concert March 25

Home Concert  

On March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilshire Auditorium, three choirs will perform: Fullerton College Concert Choir, 85 voices; Fullerton College Chamber Singers, 36 voices; and special guests, Azusa Pacific University Chamber Singers, 34 voices. The choirs will sing a wonderful variety of different periods of classical music, folk music, and spirituals. John Tebay will conduct the Fullerton choirs and Dr. Michelle Jensen will be the conductor of the APU Chamber Singers. All three choirs are looked upon as some of the finest collegiate choirs in the United States.

Athletics at Fullerton College

  

Baseball

The Hornets took game one out of the three-game series against their district and conference rival Cypress College beating the Chargers 6-5 in 11 innings last Thursday. Halfway though the season, Fullerton is currently sitting in first place with an Orange Empire Conference record of 5-2 and an overall record of 15-5. Up Next: The Hornets will host Irvine Valley College on March 17. The first pitch will go out at 2 p.m.

 

Softball

Fullerton had a rough time of it last Friday falling to Santiago Canyon College 7-0 at home. FC has dropped their last three conference games setting them back to fifth place in the OEC standings. Up Next: FC (12-8, 4-5) will hit the road against San Bernardino Valley College on March 17 at 2:30 p.m. for a non-conference match-up. Then on March 19, the Hornets will host a conference game against Riverside City College at 3 p.m.

 

Swim & Dive

The Hornet swim and dive teams split their meets verse Santa Ana and Riverside Colleges last Friday. Both the men's and women's teams had wins over Santa Ana and then they both lost to Riverside. Hornet Standouts: Gabriella Garcia - 50, 200 freestyle, Joe Babbitt - 50, 200 freestyle, and Tom Beckleheimer - 1 and 3m diving. Single winner: Erika McFeggin, 100 freestyle. Up Next: Fullerton will participate at the College of San Mateo Invitational on March 20.

 

Women's Track & Field

The Hornets traveled to Occidental College last Friday and picked up five personal records. Hornet athlete Fanny Giron claimed, "I want to break 59 seconds in my race today." She met her goal and more with a time of 58.75 for the 400-meter. She continues to lead the conference in that event and second to her is teammate, Samantha Duong. Sam was within one second of her PR with a 1:01.45 effort. Jasmine Mendoza ran 1:04.47 and Jenny Cadman 1:07.52 for their personal records for the day. These ladies ran the 1600 meter relay in 4:14.62 for a season best effort shaving three seconds off their previous time. Andrea Mendez had a decent attempt in her 800-meter race and gave herself a small PR running 2:22.01. Breanna Arroyo had her first 5K (3.1 miles) on the track. This event entails running 12 and a half laps and finished with a 21:44.23 time. Teammate Julia Popick competed in her first 10K (25 laps - 6.1 miles) finishing in 44:02.69. Up Next: The Hornets will compete on March 20 at the Antelope Valley Invitational with the events beginning at noon.

 

Men's Track & Field

The Hornet Men competed at the highly competitive Occidental College Spring Distance Carnival on Friday night. Adrian Williams and Brendan Bartunek better their seasonal personal marks by nearly a full second in the 400 meters, with respectable times of 50.14 and 51.74. Freshman Ramiro Espinoza continues to improve in the 3000 meter steeplechase as he learns how to negotiate the 27 barriers throughout the race, running 10:25.62. Along with Espinoza, Fullerton High School grad, Johnny Nava continues to lead the Hornets with his 10:15.66 for that race. Other races throughout the night saw Freshman Jonathan Sheatz and Javin DeLa Torre tackle the 5000 meters for their first time on the track, 17:15 and 17:24 respectively. Brandon Velasco and Raul Bustamante ran the rarely contested 10,000 meters, (25 laps) at 10:30 p.m Friday night. While Velasco, suffered from cramping throughout the race, his 33:43.60. is respectable. Bustamante ran 39:27, in a race that had 58 athletes circling a track for well over 30 minutes. Up Next: The Hornets will compete on March 20 at the Antelope Valley Invitational with the events beginning at noon.

 

Women's Water Polo

Hornet women's water polo coach, Gabriel Martinez was a guest speaker at the LA84 Foundation's Success in Water Polo, Novice to Olympic Levels. Along with heading up the Hornet program, Coach Martinez has been an international coach leading the women's Mexican National team at the Pan American games. Other speakers included Patty Cardenas (2008 silver medalist), Chris Duplanty (three-time Olympian), and Alex Rodriguez (head coach of Pomona-Pitzer and the USA men's Junior National team).
