FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP
|
WOMEN'S WATER POLO: For the sixth time this season, the Hornets had to go through a tough Riverside City College squad to win the CCCAA State Championship 8-7 in overtime! This year's tournament was played at Sacramento's American River College with two teams representing the North (#1 North Diablo Valley and #2 North Foothill) and two from the South (#1 South Fullerton and #2 South Riverside). In game one on Friday, FC ended Foothill College's season beating the Owls 13-5. Then on Saturday, the Hornets had to face their Orange Empire Conference foe in Riverside City College. The game was heavy in defense as it ended in a 6-6 tie before having to play in overtime. FC proved resilient keeping their unbeaten streak intact with an 8-7 victory. This is the first time in since the program began in 1996 that Fullerton College has won a state championship.
MEN'S SOCCER: Fullerton pulled off a dramatic sudden death victory at home on Saturday eclipsing MiraCosta College 6-5 on penalty kicks. The Hornets fell behind 2-0, but turned it around in the second half tying up the game 2-2. Ronnie Cruz scored the first goal for FC at 69 minutes on a shot from 25-yards out with the assist by William Rodriguez. Fullerton tied the game up in the 74th minute on a shot by Jose Garcia with the assist coming from Manuel Gonzalez. With the game coming down to place kicks, each team exchanged three apiece before Armando Corral kicked the winning goal past MiraCosta's GK with the authority. Up Next: The #8 Hornets will travel to #1 Mt. SAC on Nov. 25, 3 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY: The Hornets ran very well at the State Championships held at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday. For the ladies, FC's Alethea Streeter ran 19:50 for a 65th place finish out of 197 runners. On the men's side, Brandon Velasco ran 21:19 taking 49th place overall and Manuel Ruiz ran 22:43 for 60th place out of 213 runners. "It was a day where my runners out performed my expectations and I couldn't be happier with their efforts- I'm very proud of all three of them", Head Coach Gina Bevec.
FOOTBALL: The Fullerton College football team suffered through an agonizing defeat at home on Saturday as Mt. San Antonio College trounced the Hornets 44-14 in the Southern California Bowl. It was a semi-final game where the winner goes to the Southern California Football Association's Championship game. Mt. SAC will now play the winner of the Ventura and Riverside game. The loss ends the Hornets' stellar season where they won the Southern Conference going an undefeated 6-0. It was Fullerton's first home loss at Nathan Shapell Stadium.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The #9 Lady Hornets qualified for the SoCal Regional Playoffs and will play at College of the Canyons on Nov. 25, 6 p.m.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The FC women's basketball team is off to a fantastic start with an unbeaten record of 5-0. This past weekend the Hornets played at the Glendale College Tournament and won it all! In game one, they beat last season's state champ Ventura College 72-58. In game two, FC held off a feisty Antelope Valley squad 58-51. In the championship game, the Hornets knocked off Pasadena City College 61-55. Up Next: Fullerton will play at the Chaffey College Tournament Dec. 5-7.
WOMEN'S GOLF: The Orange Empire dominated the state championships held at Morro Bay GC. Out of the hundreds of golfers across the state, COD won the team championship and Leleaga Meredith of IVC captured the individual title. Assisting in this command performance were FC's own Kacy Kaichi and Tiffany Kohyama who finished 15th and 16th respectively in the individual competition. A quick recap of the golf season shows FC finishing 3rd in regular season conference play and second place in the conference championships. The team ended their season with a fourth place finish in the state regional playoffs. Individually, Kacy and Tiffany earned 1st team all-conference honors, and Jesse Giese was named to the second team. The golf team finished the season with a 71-25 record. In his first season as the Hornets head coach, John Winek produced a fine team this season keeping Fullerton among the ranks as one of the top teams in California.
