IN MEMORIAM: TONI DUBOIS 

The Fullerton College community has lost a near and dear friend, a woman of outstanding character and intelligence. After a long battle with cancer, Dr. Toni DuBois, 59, passed away on Friday, Nov. 7.  As the vice president of student services, Dr. DuBois had been a vital member of the college's leadership team for many years and a true champion for education. PRESIDENT'S OPEN FORUM: TODAY

In an effort to encourage communication and strengthen teamwork across campus, President Rajen Vurdien has scheduled a series of Open Forums. The next forum is scheduled for today at 2 p.m. in Bldg. 200, Room 224. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.

 

MEASURE J LEADS BY 8 VOTES 
The fate of Measure J is still unknown. As of Saturday, the measure was passing by eight votes. As of this morning, there were 50 votes outstanding in Orange County and many more to count in Los Angeles County. Keep up-to-date on the measure by following the Measure J Facebook page

CLASSIFIED RECOGNITION WINNER: CROCKROM

Congrats to Les-Sie' Crockrom for being awarded as the Fall Classified Recognition Winner due to her hard work and dedication with Student Affairs and Fullerton College. Way to go, Les-Sie'! She received her award at the Classified Senate's Meet and Greet last Wednesday. See photos on Facebook.

 

BUSINESS DIVISION BROWN BAG LUNCH SERIES
Fullerton College Business Management is hosting a Brown Bag Lunch Series regarding time management skills at Fullerton College on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 1:15 p.m.- 2:15 p.m. in Room 322 and 5:15 p.m.- 6:15 p.m. in Room 323. Free pizza will be available to attendees on a first-come, first-serve basis. You may also bring your own meal to the event to eat.
 
BIO, MEDICAL MANUFACTURING MEETING HELD

On Friday, Fullerton College, in cooperation with Advanced Manufacturing Deputy Sector Navigator Norma Alvarado, hosted a gathering of regional faculty and deans exploring the development of curriculum, degrees and certificates to support the region's growing Bio Manufacturing and Medical Device Manufacturing. About 30 people attended. 

 

VERY PLAID HOLIDAY PARTY
Fullerton College faculty & staff are invited to the Very Plaid Holiday Party on Dec. 9 from 2 - 4 p.m. in Rooms 224-228 and 10 -11 p.m. in Room 226. Please support the Fullerton College Food Bank by bringing food items to donate.

LIMITED UNIVERSITY REPRESENTATIVE VISITS LEFT

The Transfer Center will be hosting a limited number of university representative meetings this week and next. Encourage students to meet with representatives sooner than later, as the reps typically do not return again until mid spring. 

 

RIDESHARE SURVEY DEADLINE APPROACHING
If you have not turned in your RideShare Survey yet, you still have time! The South Coast Air Quality Management District asks that all employees fill out the survey, regardless of if they participating in RideShare or not. Please turn it in to Jami Ebright in the Bursar's Office as soon as possible. 

INCITE FALL HOLIDAY FEAST

The Incite Fall Holiday Feast will be Wed., Nov. 19 from 5:30 - 8 p.m. in Bldg. 200, Rooms 224-228. It's a great way to mingle with the Incite family, particularly the out-of-state student-athletes who are unable to go home for the holidays. If you are interested in attending, please sign up to bring a dish. If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute to the dinner, cash donations and gift card donations will be accepted. FREE SCREENING OF 'THE PACT': 12/1

The Fullerton Reads: One Book, One College Committee will host a free screening of the documentary The Pact: A Story of Survival, the Streets, and the Power of Friendship on Monday, Dec. 1 from 12:45 p.m.-2:50 p.m. in the Wilshire Auditorium. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

 

PUENTE PROGRAM HOSTS MENTOR DINNER

The Fullerton College Puente Program hosted their annual Mentor and Student Dinner last week, where 25 mentors and 31 students were present. Students work with their mentors for networking opportunities, job shadowing, and attend professional events together.

PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE WORKSHOPS

In partnership with Staff Development, the Program Review Committee is offering one-hour overview workshops in the TEC throughout the semester. We are down to the last week before the deadline, so take advantage of the support while you can as you are finalizing your self-studies. This week's offerings will cover Section4, 5, 6. And 7 of the Program Review template. For two hours after each workshop, drop-in sessions with Program Review Committee members to answer any questions about any aspect of the template or process are available. Please sign up for the workshops on the District Staff Development Calendar in the Employee tab of MyGateway. You don't need to sign up for the drop-in sessions - just come on by! Upcoming workshops will be:

  • Nov. 17, 12-1 p.m. (Section 4)
  • Nov. 18, 4-5 p.m. (Section 5)
  • Nov. 19, 1-2 p.m. (Section 6)
  • Nov. 20, 12-1 p.m. (Section 7)

DEBATERS TRIUMPH AT "BLUMER" TOURNAMENT

Fullerton's Speech & Debate team came away with dramatic wins in debate and speaking events at the 19th CSUF "Blumer" Speech & Debate Tournament on Saturday.Taylor Engle took first-place awards in both Persuasion and Informative. Her teammate, Brennan Zoellner, took fifth place in Persuasion. The team pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep of team "Public Forum" debate. Rachel Romo and Jamie See went undefeated. Also going undefeated in second were Kenneth Baer and Sarah Benedict, and in third, Zach Taylor and Michael Wu. Finishing seventh and eight were Felicia Cazares & Kitiney Phumchun and Paula Sunga and Joseph Phillips. Kenneth Baer took the top-speaker in debate award, edging teammate Kitiny Phumchun (second).  Rachel Romo and Jamie See finished forth and fifth, and Michael Wu was seventh-top speaker at the tournament. The team next heads to the PSCFA Fall Championships Dec. 5-7. Doug Kresse and Collette Blumer serve as coaches.

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

WOMEN'S WATER POLO: The undefeated #1 Hornets made history on Saturday winning the Southern California Regional Championship for the first time in the program's history. Fullerton opened up against Golden West College on Friday in round two of the SoCal Regionals (hosted by Citrus College) knocking out last season's state champions by a score of 16-4. On Saturday, FC took care of Chaffey College in the morning game 17-5 to move onto to the title match-up against Riverside City College later on in the day. It was a hard-fought contest (the 5th on the season) where the Hornets came out on top 9-8 winning the SoCal Regional for the first time in school history. "Our team had some adversity, but they found a way to fight through and win their games. I'm very proud of them and the way they never give up", Head Coach Gabriel Martinez. Up Next: The Hornets (33-0) and Tigers will both move on to the State Championship Tournament held at American River College November 20-23 where they will face the top two teams in the northern region.

 

MEN'S WATER POLO: #8 Fullerton made it to the second round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs (hosted by Citrus College) by defeating #9 Cuesta College 10-7 on Thursday. #1 Golden West College ended the Hornets' season on Friday 14-7.

 

WOMEN'S GOLF: After the first day of competition in Morro Bay, Tiffany Kohyama is four shots off the lead after shooting a 79. Kacy Kaichi follows with an 80. The final 18 holes are being held today.

 

FOOTBALL: The #4 Hornets will play #2 Mt. San Antonio College this Saturday at home in the Southern California Bowl in the first round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. 

 

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The Lady Hornets made quick work of Riverside City College at home on Friday defeating the Tigers 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-15). Up Next: FC (15-5, 8-5) will play at undefeated #2 in the state Irvine Valley College this Wednesday at 6 p.m. 

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER: After a rough season, the FC women's soccer team wrapped it up on a high-note winning their last three game of the year. On Friday, the Hornets beat conference rival Santa Ana College 1-0 on the road. During their three-game win streak, Fullerton did not allow a goal out-scoring their opponents 5-0.

 

MEN'S SOCCER: The Hornets played their last conference game of the season Friday at Orange Coast College with the game ending in a 1-1 tie. Up Next: Fullerton (9-5-7, 7-4-3) awaits its fate in the SoCal Regionals where they are looking to make the playoffs for the first time in the last eight years.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Hornet played at the Santa Barbara City College Crossover Tournament over the weekend and opened up the season winning both games. In game one on Friday, FC knocked off their host Santa Barbara 64-57. In their second game on Saturday, they handled Moorpark College 51-37. Up Next: The Hornets (2-0) will play at the Glendale College Tournament November 21-23.

 

MEN'S BASKETBALL: The FC men's basketball team hosted their 31st annual Basketball Classic last week and were bounced early after losing two games. In game one, the Hornets took on San Diego Mesa College and fell 66-58. In their second game, Fullerton played Victor Valley College for a chance at the consolation game and lost 78-69. Chaffey College wound up winning the tournament beating L.A. Southwest 86-77. Up Next: The Hornets (1-4) hope to pick it up when they play in the Bakersfield College Tournament November 28-30.

4 Hornets sealed the conference title going undefeated in the Southern Conference for the second year in a row after taking apart Palomar College 38-17 at Nathan Shapell stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a good win for Fullerton on their homecoming game that boosted their overall record to 8-2 and their conference record to 6-0. The loss bumps Palomar to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Southern Conference. The Hornets are now 12-0 in conference-play the past two seasons, and they are also an undefeated 11-0 since they began playing their home games at Nathan Shapell in 2013. Up next: The Hornets (8-2, 6-0) have a bye next weekend, but host a playoff game at Nathan Shapell Stadium on Nov. 22. The opponent and kickoff time will be determined later.

Women's water polo debuted in the Summer Olympics in 2000, a century after men's water polo became an Olympic sport.
