FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

FOOTBALL: The #4 Hornets sealed the conference title going undefeated in the Southern Conference for the second year in a row after taking apart Palomar College 38-17 at Nathan Shapell stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a good win for Fullerton on their homecoming game that boosted their overall record to 8-2 and their conference record to 6-0. The loss bumps Palomar to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Southern Conference. The Hornets are now 12-0 in conference-play the past two seasons, and they are also an undefeated 11-0 since they began playing their home games at Nathan Shapell in 2013. Up next: The Hornets (8-2, 6-0) have a bye next weekend, but host a playoff game at Nathan Shapell Stadium on Nov. 22. The opponent and kickoff time will be determined later.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO: For the first time in the program's history, the Fullerton College women's water polo team laid claim to the Orange Empire Conference title. At the OEC Championships this past week, held at last season's state champion Golden West College, the #1 Hornets swept through the competition remaining undrafted on the season. Securing an opening round by, FC faced off with Orange Coast and advanced to the championship game after defeating the Pirates in a decisive 13-5 victory. The Hornets were led by Angelica Hernandez, who put up four goals. Destiny Hernandez and Grace Schade netted three and two goals respectively. Riverside City College and Fullerton College battled for the conference lead throughout the season, and so it is only fitting that the final game came down to these top two. The teams knotted the score at the end of the first and second quarters, and opened the third locked 5-5. There would be no clear leader until the last minute, with Fullerton taking possession and a one point lead on Riverside. The final whistle blew and Fullerton will take home the Championship in a 10-9 victory. Up next: The Hornets (30-0) will play in the Southern California Championships hosted by Citrus College Nov. 13-15. The top two teams will advance to the State Championships at American River College.

MEN'S WATER POLO: Fullerton caps off the Orange Empire Conference Tournament with a convincing third-place finish. In the Hornets opening game of the Orange Empire Conference Championships, Fullerton defeated Santa Ana in a 12-7. FC started the first quarter strong, only allowing Santa Ana a single goal, while the Hornets scored six of their own. Santa Ana did their best to recover in the third, but it was Fullerton's moment to advance to game 4. In their second game, Fullerton finished the day with a 10-5 loss at the hands of Orange Coast College. The Pirates started the game slowly with a single goal in the first quarter, but took a solid lead scoring three goals in each of the following quarters. For a chance to take third place in the tournament, FC did not disappoint as they went on to defeat Riverside City College 14-6. Up Next: The #9 Hornets will play in the Southern California Championships at Citrus College Nov. 13-15. FC will open with #9 Cuesta College on Nov. 13, at 2:30 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY: For the men's team, Brandon Velsaco, and Manny Ruiz put their best foot forward at the SoCal Championships qualifying for the State Championships last Friday. Velasco placed 45th out of 203 competitors with a finish of 21:22. Ruiz came in 75th with a time of 21:47. The Hornet team placed 20th out of 28 teams with a final score of 492 points. On the women's side, Tia Streeter placed 58th out of 177 runners to qualify for the State Championships. Streeter's finish time was 20:12 at Van Nuys' Woodley Park. As a whole, the Hornet cross country team placed 21st out of 27 teams (527 team points). Up Next: The State Championships in Fresno on Nov. 21, at 10 a.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF: After leading the state regional playoffs for most of the day, the FC women's golf team struggled on the 18th hole and finished the first round of play in second place behind IVC and ahead of regular season conference champion COD who finished one shot behind in third place. The top two teams will advance to the state championships. The final round will be held for the second consecutive day in Temecula. Kacy Kachi's 76 leads the Hornets and was the second lowest round of the day placing her in 1 shot out of the lead for the individual championship. Tiffany Kohyama is in seventh place with the top 12 individuals advancing to the state championship, which is held concurrently with the team championship in Morro Bay.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The Hornets were successful last week as they beat both of their opponents moving them up one spot to #6 in the state rankings. On Wednesday, FC avenged a loss from earlier in the season beating Orange Coast College 4-1 (25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21) at home. Then on Friday, Fullerton defeated Santa Ana College 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-13) on the road. Up Next: FC (14-4, 7-4) will play at #7 Golden West College on Nov. 12. at 6 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Fullerton started a two-game win streak last week by knocking off Golden West College 1-0 on Tuesday and then they blanked Norco College 3-0 on the road on Friday. Up Next: The Hornets (7-12-1, 4-10-1) have no shot at a playoff spot, but they will look finish the season strong by winning their final game of the season on Nov. 14 at Santa Ana College. Game time is at 3 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER: FC hosted Santa Ana College last Friday and brought down the Dons 3-0. The win keeps Fullerton on pace for a playoff spot as they are currently sitting in third place in the Orange Empire Conference standings with a record of 8-5-6 overall and 6-3-3 in conference-play. Up Next: The Hornets will host Cypress College today at 3 p.m.
