MEASURE J ON TOMORROW'S BALLOT 
Voters within the North Orange County Community College District boundaries will decide whether to approve Measure J. The bond would create $474 million to support Fullerton College, Cypress College and the School of Continuing Education. Passage of Measure J would amount to a projected $14.90 per $100,000 assessed value for property owners, and would include citizen oversight and regular audits to assure accountability and transparency. Read more ...

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS ATTRACTS 1,200 TO CAMPUS 
The 21st annual Dia de los Muertos celebration attracted about 1,200 people to campus on Oct. 30. The event featured numerous ofrendas, live entertainment, face painting, a sketch crawl and more. Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva also attended and presented organizers with a certificate of appreciation. See photos on the Ethnic Studies Facebook page.  

HOMECOMING/COLLEGE HOUR: 11/5

'New Orleans Mardi Gras' Homecoming and College Hour festivities will be held Wed., Nov. 5 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the quad. Faculty and staff are encouraged to release classes early so students can participate in College Hour between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. The event will also include a pep rally, live music, booth competitions, and a free Jambalaya lunch for the first 750 Hornets.

 

HORNET FOOTBALL HOMECOMING GAME: 11/8

The Hornet Football Game will be held on Sat., Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at Yorba Linda High School. Come cheer on our Hornets as they take on the Palomar Comets! 

 

FACULTY DANCE CONCERT: 11/7, 11/8

The Fullerton College Dance Department will host a faculty dance concert on Nov. 7-8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Theatre. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for non-students. 

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN SURVEY

The Staff Development Committee is currently working on a proposal for a comprehensive Professional Development Plan for Fullerton College. The committee values input and would like to hear feedback about the perceptions of professional learning at Fullerton College. They ask that faculty and staff assist them by filling out the survey here no later than Wed., Nov. 12. 

 

THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT

Fullerton College Health Services will host the Great American Smokeout on Wed., Nov. 5 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the quad. Community agencies will be present and are happy to answer questions or speak about the benefits of quitting smoking. For more information, contact Health Services at (714) 992-7093. 

 

COVERED CALIFORNIA NEWS ROUNDUP

On Nov.11, Health Services will have a Covered California informational seminar in Bldg. 200, Room 226 at 12-1:30 p.m. Students and staff with questions about Covered California should stop by and view the presentation and ask any questions they may have. Covered California open enrollment starts Nov. 15.

 

From Nov. 3 - 13, Health Services will have drop-in Q&A sessions in room 1005-0 from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. 

 

From Nov. 15 - Feb.15, There will be certified enrollment counselors in room 1005-0. They will have free Covered California enrollment sessions available to students. To make an appointment, students can stop by room 1005-0 Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m.-7 p.m. or call (714) 992-7000 x24050.

CRITICAL PEDAGOGY PANEL: 11/13
The Fullerton College Anthropology Department will be hosting a panel discussion on Critical Pedagogy on 
Thurs, Nov. 13, from 1:30-3 p.m. in Room 1416. All faculty and students are welcome. 

VETERANS AWARENESS MONTH HAS BEGUN
Help celebrate our veterans this month! Many exciting events are planned for Veterans Awareness Month, starting with the Veterans Care Package Drive. Donations can be delivered to the Veterans Resource Center in Room 518. Read more ...

A.S. CAREBANK LOOKING FOR DONATIONS

Associated Students is seeking donation for its CareBank Program, which provides short-term emergency assistance to Fullerton College students who are in need. CareBank, which is funded completely by donations, is expecting the number of students in need to increase during the new year. 'HUICHOLES' SCREENING: 11/19 
The campus community is invited to the film "Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians" on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Campus Theatre. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $7.50. The film is on a North American tour and this will be the only Orange County screening. The film presents the case of the defense of Wirikuta, sacred territory to the Wixárika (Huichol) people, against the threat of transnational mining exploitation. The event will include an intercultural panel-dialogue with the filmmaker and spiritual leaders featured in the film, as well as a tianguis (marketplace) comprised of local community organizations and Indigenous artisans.

PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE WORKSHOPS

The Program Review Committee is offering one-hour overview workshops in the TEC throughout the semester. This week's offerings will cover Sections 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the Program Review template. Drop-in sessions with Program Review Committee members will be available for two hours after each workshop. No sign-up is needed-just stop by! Upcoming workshops include:

 

  • Nov. 3, 12-1 p.m. (Section 4)
  • Nov. 4, 4-5 p.m. (Section 2 with Carlos Ayon)
  • Nov. 5, 1-2 p.m. (Section 5)
  • Nov. 6, 12-1 p.m. (Section 6)

DEBATERS ENJOY HALLOWEEN VICTORIES

Fullerton's Daniel Boughter and Doan Truong went undefeated on Oct. 31 and topped a strong field of debaters from CSU Fullerton, CSU Northridge, and the University of Antelope Valley, debating on the topic of "fracking." With Antelope Valley second, Fullerton debaters captured the next three top spots. Paula Sunga and Joseph Phillips were third, Felicia Casares and Kitiny Phumchun were fourth, and Kenneth Baer and Sarah Benedict were fifth place. Boughter took top-speaker honors, and was backed up by 3rd-place Zach Turner, fourth-place Kitniny Phumchun, and 5th-place Paula Sunga. On Nov. 7, the team heads to Rio Hondo to compete in speech and Parliamentary debate.

 

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

FOOTBALL: The Hornets outlasted Saddleback College at the Snake Pit on Saturday night, holding off a late Gauchos rally on their way to a 21-16 victory. #4 Fullerton remains the only undefeated team in the Southern Conference at 5-0 and has secured at least a share of the Southern Conference title, its third in three years. Up Next: Fullerton (7-2, 5-0) looks to finish undefeated and outright conference champs with a 1 p.m. faceoff with Palomar College next Saturday, Nov. 8, at Nathan Shappell Stadium. It's homecoming so come on out and support your Hornets!

 

WOMEN'S WATER POLO: The #1 Lady Hornets continued their undefeated streak last Friday beating Santa Barbara College 13-5 and Mt. San Antonio College 13-3 in the Hornet Pool. Up Next: Fullerton (28-0, 6-0) will play in the Orange Empire Conference Championships at Golden West College Nov. 7 and 8.

MEN'S WATER POLO: Fullerton played in the Ventura Mini-Tournament last Friday and was victorious in both game they played. In the first game, FC handled Mt. SAC 14-2. In the second game, the Hornets beat Ventura College 12-6. Up Next: Fullerton (17-8, 3-2) will play in the Orange Empire Conference Championships at Golden West College Nov. 6 and 8.

CROSS COUNTRY: The 2014 Orange Empire Conference Championships were held at Fullerton's Craig Park on Friday, October 31st with Orange Coast College claiming the men's title with a time average of 20:42.02 and Riverside City College winning the women's with an average of 18:43.02. Both the Hornet men's and women's teams placed  fourth overall. FC's Brandon Velasco placed fourth overall out of 76 runners and Tia Streeter placed seventh out of 62 for the ladies. Up Next: The SoCal Regionals at Woodley Park in Van Nuys on Friday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: #7 FC took one on the nose at #5 Cypress College last Friday falling to Chargers  for the second time this season 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) . Up Next: The Hornets will look to rebound when they host Orange Coast College in the South Gym on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER: The FC men's soccer team hosted Irvine Valley College last Friday with the game ending in a 1-1 tie. The Hornets are still in the mix for a playoff spot but must win the next four matches to make their case. Up Next: Fullerton (6-5-6, 4-3-3) will travel to Norco College this Tuesday, Nov. 4. Game time is at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER:  Fullerton got roughed up at Santiago Canyon College on Friday losing to the Hawks 6-1. Up Next: FC (5-12-1, 2-10-1) will host Golden West College on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF: The FC women's golf team rebounded from last week's disappointments with their strongest performance of the year at the final OEC regular season event. The team ended the regular season of conference play by shooting a season low round of 326 at Woods Valley Golf Course, good for third place. FC was led by Tiffany Kohyama's 77 and Kacy Kachi's 78. Freshman Stormi Perry set a personal best of 87. Up Next: The Orange Empire Conference finals will be held over two days Nov. 3 and 5 back at Woods Valley.
