PRESIDENT'S OPEN FORUM: TODAY
In an effort to encourage communication and strengthen teamwork across campus, President Rajen Vurdien has scheduled a series of Open Forums. The next forum will be today at 2 p.m. in room 224. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.

CONGRESSWOMAN SANCHEZ ENDORSES BOND
The endorsement list for Measure J continues to grow. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez encouraged people to vote for the $574 million during lunch at Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit on Oct. 17. See the video on Facebook

 

TRANSFER AWARENESS WEEK STARTS TODAY

Transfer Awareness Week kicks off today with many events designed to help students transfer to four-year universities. Faculty and staff can do their part by wearing their alma mater gear this week. Learn more at the Cadena Cultural and Transfer Centers's website

 

LATINO SUMMIT DRAWS BIG AUDIENCE
Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit (CLOGS) attracted more than 400 people on Oct. 17 to Fullerton College. The event included a comprehensive selection of engaging workshops and speaking engagements, such as Dr. Jeff Duncan-Andrade, an associate professor of Raza Studies and Education at San Francisco State University, and co-founder of the Teaching Excellence Network. ART SHOW ADDRESS LIFE, DEATH, AFTERLIFE
Fullerton College Art Gallery will present The Life Cycle from Oct. 27 - Dec. 1. The campus community is invited to the opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 23, 5 - 7 p.m. This exhibit features the work of three artists who examine the cycle of life, death, and the afterlife. RSVP on Facebook

DONATIONS SOUGHT FOR 'ADOPT AN ANGEL' 

EOPS/CARE and CalWORKs are currently in the planning stages for their annual "Adopt an Angel" Student-Parent Holiday Party scheduled for Friday, Dec. 12. Those wishing to participate by adopting a child may do so by stopping by the EOPS Office starting Nov. 5. The gifts may be brought to the EOPS Office from Dec. 1-9. This event is supported completely by monetary donations. If you would like to make a donation, you may drop it off at the EOPS Office and you will receive a tax-deductible receipt. Checks may be made payable to "Fullerton College." Thank you for your continued generosity and support of our students! 

 

'HUICHOLES' SCREENING: 11/16 
The campus community is invited to the film "Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians" on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Campus Theatre. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $7.50. The film is on a North American tour and this will be the only Orange County screening. The film presents the case of the defense of Wirikuta, sacred territory to the Wixárika (Huichol) people, against the threat of transnational mining exploitation. The event will include an intercultural panel-dialogue with the filmmaker and spiritual leaders featured in the film, as well as a tianguis (marketplace) comprised of local community organizations and Indigenous artisans. 

 

GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKE-OUT RECAP
More than 8,500 students, plus staff and faculty, completed the Great California ShakeOut evacuation drill in 18 minutes on Oct. 16. Theatre students acted like injured people giving Health Services staff members a life-like experience dealing with an emergency on campus. Additionally, faculty practiced using the Evacuation-Strkyer Chair during the earthquake drill. See photos on Facebook.

 

OPEN FORUM DISCUSSES MISSION, VISION, VALUES 
NOCCCD will be entering into a substantive review of the district's Mission, Vision, and Values and the campus community is invited to participate. There will be open forums and other ways for people to give their input. The Fullerton College forum will be Tuesday, Oct. 28, 9-11 a.m. in Bldg. 200, Rooms 224-226. refreshments will be served. A draft of the vision, mission and values statements will be submitted to the District Consultation Council and Chancellor's Staff for review, and will be presented to the Board of Trustees in early 2015 for approval. JOIN THE HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE COMMITTEE

On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Holiday Open House will be held for the staff of Fullerton College. The day event will be from 2-4 p.m. in the College Center and the evening event is at 10 p.m. in the College Center Staff Dining Room. Volunteers are needed to help with the planning. The first planning meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 9:30 a.m. in PCR-A. Please email the event chair Mary Molina to let her know if you will attend the volunteer meeting.

 

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION: 10/30

The Ethnic Studies Department invites the campus community to the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Oct. 30, 6-10 p.m. in the quad. There will be more than 30 ofrendas (tribute altars) on display.

 

CLUB COLLECTS SOCKS FOR HOSPICE

The Sociology Club is collecting "Super Soft Socks" for Hospice through Oct. 28. There is a drop-off box in Office Suite 1423. Contact Angie Andrus for more information. 

 

MEASURE J PHONE BANKING 

The Measure J campaign is hiring phone bank callers. The shifts are three-hours long, the pay is $10 an hour and run almost daily through Nov. 3. The campaign headquarters are at the Schools First Credit Union headquarters in Placentia. Contact the field director Carlos Penilla for more information at (562) 833-3748.

 

DSS SEE'S CANDY FUNDRAISER

The Disability Support Services office is selling See's Candy to raise money for DSS spring scholarships. To place an order, pick up a form from the DSS Office in Room 842 or download the formThe deadline for orders is Friday, Nov. 7, and the candy will be delivered the last week of November. For any questions, call ext. 27099.

 

MECHA THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE BEGINS  

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán's (MEChA)Thanksgiving Food Drive has begun, and departments throughout campus will be contacted soon to host a collection box in their areas. CLASSIFIED AWARD NOMINATIONS OPEN 

Fall is underway so it's time once again to honor your favorite outstanding Classified Professional by nominating him/her for the Fall 2014 Classified Recognition Award. The fall nomination period is from Oct. 1-31, with the winner being announced at the Classified Senate Meet & Greet on Nov. 12Criteria for nominations include:

  • All nominees must be permanent full/part-time classified employees of Fullerton College, worked in the District for a minimum of five years, and be in good standing.
  • Nominations may be submitted by administrators, faculty, staff or students.
  • Employees may receive more than one nomination and each nomination must be individualized.
  • Nominations must be submitted on the Classified Employee Recognition Nomination Form.  

Forms are available in the mailroom or online. You may submit your nomination form via campus mail to Sharon Kelly or email to skelly@fullcoll.edu.

 

PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE WORKSHOPS

In partnership with Staff Development, the Program Review Committee is offering one-hour overview workshops in the TEC throughout the semester. This week's offerings will cover Sections1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the Program Review template. For two hours after each workshop, drop-in sessions with Program Review Committee members to answer any questions about any aspect of the template or process are available. Please sign up for the workshops on the District Staff Development Calendar in the Employee tab of MyGateway. You don't need to sign up for the drop-in sessions - just come on by! Upcoming workshops will be:

  • Oct. 20 12-1 p.m. (Section 1)
  • Oct. 21, 4-5 p.m. (Section 3)
  • Oct. 22, 3:30-4:30 p.m. (Section 4)
  • Oct. 23, 12-1 p.m. (Section 5)
  • Oct. 24,  1-2 p.m. (Section 6) 

 

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

FOOTBALL: In the 92nd meeting between two of California's oldest community college football teams, Fullerton College out-gained Santa Ana College 49-14 in a lopsided match-up at Eddie West Field on Saturday afternoon. The Fullerton win tied the series record for the most consecutive wins at eight (2007-2014). The first time this was done was between 1963 and 1970 during the Sherbeck era. Santa Ana's longest winning streak stretched six games from 1957 to 1962. Up Next: The Hornets (5-2, 3-0) will host Grossmont College on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Nathan Shapell Stadium. Kick off will be at 6 p.m.

 

WOMEN'S WATER POLO: #1 in the state, Fullerton took care of business this past week boat-racing Orange Coast College 20-5. Up Next: The undefeated Hornets (20-0, 3-0) travel down the street to take on Cypress College this Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The #7 Lady Hornets brought down #9 Golden West College in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) at home on Friday. Up Next: FC (10-2, 3-2) travels to Riverside City College on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.

MEN'S WATER POLO: The Hornets had a rough week dropping four straight games beginning with a 14-13 loss to Orange Coast College on Wednesday. FC was up in the game 9-2 and the wheels fell off as they suffered the conference loss. On Friday, Fullerton lost another close one to Cerritos College 8-7. Then on Saturday, the Hornets dropped two games to a couple of the top teams in Southern California in Grossmont College 13-7 and Citrus College 11-7. Up Next: FC (13-8, 2-2) will try and get one in the win column when they take part in the Santa Monica Tournament on Friday, Oct. 24.

MEN'S SOCCER: FC beat a tough Cypress College squad 2-0 on the road last Friday. Up Next: Fullerton (5-5-4, 2-3-1) hosts Orange Coast College on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Fullerton played strong on the road at Cypress College on Friday but lost 1-0 to one of the top teams in SoCal. Up Next: The Hornets (5-9, 2-7) will play at Irvine Valley College for another Orange Empire Conference match-up on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Game time is at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Led by Jesse Giese's career low round of 80, FC finished 2nd out of 9 schools at Wednesday's OEC #7 tournament held at Arroyo Trabucco golf course. Kacy Kaichi ended the day shooting an 83, while Tiffany Kohyama followed up with 86. Stormi Perry Fullerton is well positioned in conference play to qualify for the state regional playoffs that begin November 3rd in San Diego. Up Next: The Hornets will play in OEC #8 at the Costa Mesa Golf Course (Mesa Linda Course) on Monday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: The Hornets ran at the Mt. San Antonio College Invite on Friday taking 8th place out of 19 teams. Leading the FC pack was Brandon Velasco who placed 12th overall out of 183 runners with a finishing time of 21:27.1. Manuel Ruiz came in 39th overall with a finish of 22:17.1. Up Next: Fullerton will host the Orange Empire Conference Championships at Craig Park on Oct. 31 at 9 a.m.
