In an effort to encourage communication and strengthen teamwork across campus, President Rajen Vurdien has scheduled a series of Open Forums. The next forum will be or Monday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. in room 224. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.

GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKE-OUT: 10/16
The whole campus will get into the action during the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill this Thursday at 10:16 a.m. Everyone, everywhere, should know how to protect themselves in an earthquake. The Great ShakeOut is a good reminder for faculty, staff and students to opt-in for emergency text messaging. This can be done by following these steps: log into MyGateway → click Person Information → Set Text Message Alert Preferences. 

 

OPEN FORUM DISCUSSES MISSION, VISION, VALUES 
NOCCCD will be entering into a substantive review of the district's Mission, Vision, and Values and the campus community is invited to participate. There will be open forums and other ways for people to give their input. The Fullerton College forum will be Tuesday, Oct. 28, 9-11 a.m. in Bldg. 200, Rooms 224-226. refreshments will be served. A draft of the vision, mission and values statements will be submitted to the District Consultation Council and Chancellor's Staff for review, and will be presented to the Board of Trustees in early 2015 for approval. FACULTY, STAFF PRESENT RESEARCH 
Fullerton College's faculty and staff presented at two recent conferences. Karen Rose and Sam Foster presented "HSI STEM Investments Yield High Profits and Maximize Students' Success" at the annual Hispanic Association of College and Universities conference in Denver. Closer to home, Bridget Kominek, Jeanne Costello, Kim Orlijan, Miguel Powers and Dani Wilson presented on a variety of topics at the Strengthening Student Success Crossing Boundaries, in Costa Mesa last week. The local conference was presented by the Research and Planning Group for California Community Colleges in collaboration with California Community Colleges' Success Network, Career Ladders Project and LearningWorks. 

 

ANNUAL HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE SET FOR 12/9

On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Holiday Open House will be held for the staff of Fullerton College. The day event will be from 2-4 p.m. in the College Center and the evening event is at 10 p.m. in the College Center Staff Dining Room. Volunteers are needed to help with the planning. The first planning meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 9:30 a.m. in PCR-A. Please email the event chair Mary Molina to let her know if you will attend the volunteer meeting.

 

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION: 10/30

The Ethnic Studies Department invites the campus community to the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Oct. 30, 6-10 p.m. in the quad. There will be more than 30 ofrendas (tribute altars) on display.

 

CLUB RUSH & SUBSTANCE ABUSE FAIR

Associated Students and Inter-Club Council are co-sponsoring the October Club Rush with Health Services Substance Abuse Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.  There will be live entertainment, free giveaways, a photo tent, and information regarding opportunities beyond Fullerton College.

 

UCI "TRANSFER TRACK"
The Cadena Transfer Center will host a trip to UCI for a "Transfer Track," which will give students an opportunity to speak with UCI representatives, explore housing options, learn about financial aid, and more. To RSVP, visit the center's website.

EVACUATION-STRYKER CHAIR
Do you know how to use an Evacuation-Strkyer Chair? You can learn about this important piece of safety equipment on Wed., Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in the lobby stairwell of Bldg. 200. The equipment will also be used during the Great ShakeOut exercise on Thurs., Oct. 16. No RSVP is required.

MEASURE J PHONE BANKING 

The Measure J campaign is hiring phone bank callers. The shifts are three-hours long, the pay is $10 an hour and run almost daily through Nov. 3. The campaign headquarters are at the Schools First Credit Union headquarters in Placentia. Contact the field director Carlos Penilla for more information at (562) 833-3748.

 

FULLERTON COLLEGE ANNUAL SECURITY REPORT

The Clery Act requires that Fullerton College distributes the Annual Security Report to all staff and students. You can obtain a copy of the report from the Campus Safety Department or view it here.

 

DSS SEE'S CANDY FUNDRAISER

The Disability Support Services office is selling See's Candy to raise money for DSS spring scholarships. To place an order, pick up a form from the DSS Office in Room 842 or download the formThe deadline for orders is Friday, Nov. 7, and the candy will be delivered the last week of November. For any questions, call ext. 27099.

 

TRANSFER AWARENESS WEEK: OCT. 20-24

Wear you alma mater gear during the Cadena Transfer Center's Transfer Awareness Week from Oct. 20-24. Daily workshops are planned to help to promote success among transfer students.

 

MECHA THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE BEGINS  

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán's (MEChA)Thanksgiving Food Drive has begun, and departments throughout campus will be contacted soon to host a collection box in their areas. If you are interested in sponsoring a collection box, please contact Gerald Padilla. Visit the MEChA Facebook page to learn more about their activities.   

 

LOCAL HISTORY WORKSHOPS 

The Library is offering 30-minute workshops on local history resources. These workshops are required for students entering the Fullerton Heritage Essay Contest. The first prize is $400 and the second prize is for $200.  The essays may be on any topic related to the city of Fullerton. Applications are available at the library reference desk. The workshops will be held on the second floor in room 827. For more information about the essay contest or local history workshop, contact Jane Ishibashi at or 714-992-7378.

CLUBS HOST 'THE LINE' SCREENING: 10/13 

The Sociology Club and The Political Science Student Association will host a film screening and discussion called "The Line" on Monday, Oct. 13 from 3:30-5 p.m. in Room 1440. The film discusses the tangle of political, legal, and cultural questions that surround issues of sex and consent. Contact Angie Andrus for more information. 

 

COFFEES WITH THE BOARD AND CHANCELLOR

All staff and faculty are invited to attend one of the upcoming Coffees with the Board of Trustees and Chancellor. The coffees are informal gatherings for staff, faculty and students to ask questions and have a dialogue with board members and the chancellor. Each campus hosts one coffee per semester, and employees are welcome to attend any or all of the three coffees at their convenience.

LATINO OPPORTUNITY SUMMIT: 10/17 
Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit will be Oct. 17 at Fullerton College. The purpose of this regional summit is to provide a venue to discuss the many ways that Orange County schools, leaders, teachers, parents, and community partners can act together to close the opportunity gap for Latino students.

CLASSIFIED AWARD NOMINATIONS OPEN 

Fall is underway so it's time once again to honor your favorite outstanding Classified Professional by nominating him/her for the Fall 2014 Classified Recognition Award. The fall nomination period is from Oct. 1-31, with the winner being announced at the Classified Senate Meet & Greet on Nov. 12Criteria for nominations include:

  • All nominees must be permanent full/part-time classified employees of Fullerton College, worked in the District for a minimum of five years, and be in good standing.
  • Nominations may be submitted by administrators, faculty, staff or students.
  • Employees may receive more than one nomination and each nomination must be individualized.
  • Nominations must be submitted on the Classified Employee Recognition Nomination Form.  

Forms are available in the mailroom or online. You may submit your nomination form via campus mail to Sharon Kelly or email to skelly@fullcoll.edu.

 

PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE WORKSHOPS

In partnership with Staff Development, the Program Review Committee is offering one-hour overview workshops in the TEC throughout the semester. This week's offerings will cover Section 7 and 2 (KPIs) of the Program Review template. For two hours after each workshop, drop-in sessions with Program Review Committee members to answer any questions about any aspect of the template or process are available. Please sign up for the workshops on the District Staff Development Calendar in the Employee tab of MyGateway. You don't need to sign up for the drop-in sessions - just come on by! Upcoming workshops will be:

COMMON CORE PANEL: 10/15

Fullerton College Staff Development continues its workshop series on the Common Core State Standards Initiative with a panel of practitioners from English and math content areas, as well as looking into implementation and assessment of the standards. The panel will take place Oct. 15, at 3:30 p.m. in Bldg. 200, Room 229. Teachers and practitioners from K-12 classrooms will answer questions and discuss Common Core. For those who may have missed the first workshop in May, there will be a few short videos that recap what was presented. Please sign up on the "District-Wide Staff Development Registration Calendar" on myGateway, under the "Employee" tab, and videos will be sent to you.

 

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

FOOTBALL: The #3 FC football team fell victim to #4 Riverside City College's hard-nosed rushing attack Saturday night in a 36-13 non-conference rout at RCC's Wheelock Stadium. The loss knocks FC's record to 4-2 overall while the win boosts Riverside to 4-1 overall. Both teams remain undefeated in their respective conferences. Up Next: The Hornets will look to rebound when they take on Santa Ana College for the legendary "Key to the County Game" at Eddie West Field on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.

 

WOMEN'S WATER POLO: The #1 Lady Hornets continued their winning ways beating everyone who crossed their path last week. It began on Wednesday as they made quick work of Santa Ana College with a 15-1 victory and then remained undefeated over the weekend at the Ventura College Tournament. On Friday, FC whipped through Santa Barbara City College 19-8 and Santa Monica College 19-0. On Saturday, Fullerton matched the previous day's scores beating Stars 19-8 and El Camino College 19-0. Up Next: FC (19-0, 3-0) will host Orange Coast College on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 4 p.m. Come on out and support your Hornets!

 

MEN'S WATER POLO: The Hornets defeated Santa Ana College 15-6 at home last Wednesday. Up Next: Fullerton (13-4, 2-1) will host Orange Coast College on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m.

 

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Fullerton lost their second game of the season to another Orange Empire Conference rival in Orange Coast College on the road Friday night 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 24-26, 28-26, 13-15). It was a tight contest that featured two top-ten teams with undefeated OCC edging out the Hornets. Up Next: Fullerton (8-2, 1-2) will host Santa Ana College on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.

 

CROSS COUNTRY: Fullerton showed well at the Brubaker Invitational on Friday at Irvine Regional Park in Orange. The men's team placed 8th overall out of fifteen teams with two runners finishing in the top 20. Once again Brandon Velsaco led the way for the Hornets finishing in 13th place in the 4-mile run out of 152 runners with a time of 21:20.3. Manuel Ruiz came in at 20th place overall with a time of 21:45.1 and Johnny Nava took 39th finishing at 22:25.6. For the women, Tia Streeter ran the 5K with a time of 20:30 coming in 20th place out of 96 runners. Up Next: The Hornets will compete at the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut on Friday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m.

 

WOMEN'S GOLF: Last Monday, the women's golf team took 3rd out of eight teams at the Orange Empire Conference #5 held at El Prado Golf Course. Then on Wednesday, Fullerton placed 4th at the OEC #6 held at Sycuan. Up Next: FC will compete at the OEC #7 on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course. Tee time is at 11 a.m.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Hornets snapped a six-game losing spell at home last Tuesday shutting out Norco College 3-0. The win lands FC at 4-8 overall and gives them their first win in the Orange Empire Conference with a record of 1-6. Up Next: Fullerton has a bye this Friday but will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 14 when they host Santa Ana College at 3 p.m.

 

MEN'S SOCCER: The Hornets won much-needed conference games last week staying alive in the Orange Empire Conference. On Tuesday, FC was victorious 4-1 on the road over Irvine Valley College. Then on Friday, FC beat Norco College 2-1 at home. Up Next: Fullerton (4-4-3, 2-2) will play at Santa Ana for a tough OEC match-up against the Dons this Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m.
