Please save the date for the annual Great California Shake Out. The statewide earthquake drill will take place Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m. Everyone, everywhere, should know how to protect themselves in an earthquake. Great Shake Out Earthquake Drills are an annual opportunity for people in homes, schools, and organizations to practice what to do during earthquakes, and to improve preparedness.

EVOLUTION & CREATIONISM DEBATE: 10/9
|
The Fullerton College Anthropology Department will present a talk on the evolution-creationism debate on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 1:30 - 3 p.m. in Room 1416. The lecture will begin with a brief overview on the theory of evolution, followed by a creation-science overview. The talk will be opened up to questions at the end. LOCAL HISTORY WORKSHOPS

The Library is offering 30-minute workshops on local history resources. These workshops are required for students entering the Fullerton Heritage Essay Contest. The first prize is $400 and the second prize is for $200. The essays may be on any topic related to the city of Fullerton. Applications are available at the library reference desk. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OPPORTUNITY SUMMIT

Volunteers are needed to assist at the Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit on Oct. 17 at Fullerton College. The purpose of this regional summit is to provide a venue to discuss the many ways that Orange County schools, leaders, teachers, parents, and community partners can act together to close the opportunity gap for Latino students. Volunteers may sign up online.

CLASSIFIED AWARD NOMINATIONS OPEN

Fall is underway so it's time once again to honor your favorite outstanding Classified Professional by nominating him/her for the Fall 2014 Classified Recognition Award. The fall nomination period is from Oct. 1-31, with the winner being announced at the Classified Senate Meet & Greet on Nov. 12. Criteria for nominations include:
- All nominees must be permanent full/part-time classified employees of Fullerton College, worked in the District for a minimum of five years, and be in good standing.
- Nominations may be submitted by administrators, faculty, staff or students.
- Employees may receive more than one nomination and each nomination must be individualized.
- Nominations must be submitted on the Classified Employee Recognition Nomination Form.
Forms are available in the mailroom or online. You may submit your nomination form via campus mail to Sharon Kelly or email to skelly@fullcoll.edu.

COMMON CORE PANEL: 10/15
|
Fullerton College Staff Development continues its workshop series on the Common Core State Standards Initiative with a panel of practitioners from English and math content areas, as well as looking into implementation and assessment of the standards. The panel will take place Oct. 15, at 3:30 p.m. in Bldg. 200, Room 229. Teachers and practitioners from K-12 classrooms will answer questions and discuss Common Core. For those who may have missed the first workshop in May, there will be a few short videos that recap what was presented. FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS: FC aquatics instructor Dr. Pete Snyder's book "Libro de Polo Aquatica" (published by the L.A. 84 Olympic Foundation) was re-printed and transcribed in Spanish with the help of former Fullerton College water polo players Irlanda Martinez (UCSB sr.), Albert Vargas (CSUF junior), and Mayra Sayrinana (CSUF senior). This marks the second translation of Dr. Snyder's book, the first being in Japanese (2012).
FOOTBALL: The #3 Hornets hosted a tenacious #4 Golden West College squad on Saturday night lighting up the scoreboard with a 66-43 victory over the Rustlers in a Southern Conference duel. Both teams entered the game with only one loss on their overall records with no losses in the southern conference, but it was Fullerton who came out on top in the middle of a race for the conference title. Up Next: Fullerton (4-1, 2-0) will hit the road at #5 Riverside City College on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Wheelock Stadium at 6 p.m.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The Lady Hornets kept their undefeated record rolling last Friday night defeating Saddleback College 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-20) on the road to open Orange Empire Conference play. Up Next: #7 FC (8-0, 1-0) will host district rival #5 Cypress College this Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO: FC remains undefeated after a busy week. It wall began on Wednesday when the Hornets beat OEC rival Saddleback College 14-3, and then took that momentum into the weekend at the Cuesta College Tournament. On Friday, Fullerton defeated Santa Rosa 15-2 and Cuesta 22-8. On Saturday, the Hornets beat OEC rival Riverside City College 11-7 and then held crushed Foothill College 13- in the championship game. Up Next: The #1 Hornets (14-0, 2-0) will host Santa Ana College this Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m.
MEN'S WATER POLO: Last Wednesday, Fullerton was victorious over Saddleback College 16-11 on the road in an OEC game. The Hornets followed that up with a tough 18-11 loss on Friday at L.A. Valley College in a non-conference match-up. Up Next: The Hornets (12-4, 1-1) will host Santa Ana College this Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
CROSS COUTNRY: The Hornets ran strong in the wind and heat at the Foothill Invite on Friday at San Bernardino's Glen Helen Park. The men's team placed 2nd overall out of eight teams with FC runner Brandon Velsaco leading the way. On the women's side, the Hornets placed 4th overall out of eight teams competing in the 5K with Tia Streeter coming in as the FC lead runner 20:28 at 5th overall out of 67 runners. Up Next: The Hornets will run at the Brubaker Invitational at Irvine Regional Park on Friday, Oct. 10 at 12 p.m.
