PRESIDENT'S OPEN FORUM: TODAY
In an effort to encourage communication and strengthen teamwork across campus, President Rajen Vurdien has scheduled a series of Open Forums. The next forum is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. in room 224. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.

CLOSING THE LATINO OPPORTUNITY GAP SUMMIT
Save the date on Friday, Oct. 17 for Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit at Fullerton College. Closing the Latino opportunity gap requires a community of invested and informed stakeholders, yet few venues exist for open local discussions as to how we can act together to nurture the ambitions and aspirations of our Latino students, regardless of fiscal challenges. The purpose of this summit is to provide a venue to discuss the many ways in which Orange County schools, leaders, teachers, parents, and community partners can act together to close the opportunity gap for Latino students. This day-long summit rotates each year to a different campus in Orange County, and Fullerton College is hosting this year.

YOU CAN HELP FIGHT CANCER ON MONDAY: 9/22

City of Hope will host a "Swab Drive" on Monday, Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the quad outside of the library. Swab samples will be used to identify possible matches for cancer patients needing bone marrow or blood stem cell transplants. City of Hope will be testing anyone between the ages of 18 and 44 years of age. City of Hope was invited to campus by longtime water polo coach Rhett Price. In early July, Rhett's wife Sheri was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. In short, Sheri is being given chemotherapy, which cannot cure her, but can hopefully keep the leukemia away until a donor can be found. Her only chance to survive is that they locate a matching donor quickly and that the transplanted stem cells do not reject her body as a host. Anyone who donates on Sept. 22 will be tested as a possible match for Sheri and included in a database of many others needing a donor. Please consider being a donor and encourage students to as well.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT FUNDING AVAILABLE

The Staff Development Committee is accepting applications for Staff Development funding beginning today, Sept. 15. The group meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, and it will review applications as they come in. The earlier applications are more likely to be granted funding compared to those received later in the year. However, the process for accepting applications is ongoing while funds are available. Please review the Staff Funding Application Guidelines as well as the Dissemination Plan Guidelines, and feel free to consult with Jeanne Costello at JCostello@fullcoll.edu or other members of the committee. Here are additional documents that are helpful while applying: Dissemination Activity Ideas and Staff Development Conferences.

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

FOOTBALL: The Fullerton College football team was out-gunned 34-10 on the road on Saturday night by a physical Mt. San Antonio College squad. From the opening kickoff, the #5 Mounties ground up the #2 Hornets as everything seemed to go their way. From start to finish, it was definitely not Fullerton's night as QB Joey Verhaegh was sacked 5 times, the FC running game was held to 33 total yards, and the offense committed 4 turnovers. The second offensive play of the game for FC resulted in a sack and fumble (recovered by Verhaegh), and the last FC play of the game was a fumble. Up Next: The Hornets (1-1 overall) will host a tough Cerritos College team on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Shapell Stadium. Kick off is at 12:30 p.m. Bring an umbrella and a lot of water as it will be sunny and hot.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO: The Hornets opened the season sweeping through their opponents to win the Saddleback Tournament. On Friday, FC took on Palomar in game one beating the Comets 17-5. In game two, Fullerton knocked off host Saddleback College 16-7 and then blanked Ventura College 11-0 in game three. In the championship game on Saturday the Hornets beat Grossmont College 14-4. Up Next: Fullerton (4-0) will play at powerhouse Golden West College on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 4 p.m.

MEN'S WATER POLO: Fullerton played in the Citrus Tournament this past weekend and nearly won the whole thing. In game one on Friday, the Hornets beat Cal Tech 17-6 and then cut through San Diego Mesa 14-2. On Saturday, FC held off Mt. San Antonio 10-9 to advance to the championship game where they lost a close one to host Citrus College 10-8.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The FC women's volleyball team opened up the 2014 season at home Wednesday bringing down Cerritos College 3-1 (25-13, 25-22, 27-29, 25-12). On Friday, Fullerton traveled to Miracosta College and won 3-1 (25-13, 25-18, 16-25, 25-11). Up Next: The Hornets will travel to Citrus College this Wednesday, Sept. 24, 6 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: FC added another win to their record on Friday beating El Camino College 2-0 on Sherbeck Field. Up Next: FC (3-2) will host Cypress College on Tuesday, Sept. 16 for an Orange Empire Conference match-up. Game time is at 3 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER: The Hornets lost a tough one at home Friday falling to Cuyamaca College 4-2. Up Next: Fullerton (1-1-2) will host Chaffey College this Tuesday, Sept. 16. Game time is at 4 p.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF: The Hornets placed 3rd overall (out of 9 teams) at the OEC Event #2 held at the Soboba Golf Course on Wednesday. FC sophomore Kacy Kaichi led Fullerton shooting 79 on the day (6th best). Sophomore Tiffany Kohyama shot 87, sophomore Jesse Giese 95, freshman Brittany Prieto 98, freshman Bianca Prieto 106, and Erin Ellington 118.
