COLLEGE TO RECEIVE TOP EDUCATION AWARD
The Early College program, which is a collaboration with Fullerton College, Buena Park High School and Cal State Fullerton, will receive a Golden Bell Award in December. This statewide honor is issued by the California School Boards Association and is highly competitive. The Early College program provides high school students an opportunity to take college classes during their regular school day and earn both UC/CSU transferable college credit while meeting their high school graduation requirements. 

PRESIDENT'S OPEN FORUM: 9/15 
In an effort to encourage communication and strengthen teamwork across campus, President Rajen Vurdien has scheduled a series of Open Forums. The next forum is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. in room 224. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.

LA PHIL TO PERFORM PROFESSOR'S WORK: 10/12 
Congratulations to music professor Dr. Bruce Miller for having his composition "Pluto: The Last Planet" selected to be performed by members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Disney Hall. To learn more and to purchase tickets, please visit http://www.laphil.com

HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION AVAILABLE 

In an effort to help create better access to health care, a representative will be on campus every first and third Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the quad, to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act. Health Services also maintains an information board in the lobby of the Health Center to provide students and staff with current, rapidly emerging, information related to the Affordable Care Act. 

 

Save the date: Nov. 11, from 12-1:30 p.m. (College Center 226), for a seminar about Covered California's open enrollment.

 

ANTHROPOLOGY DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE: 9/11
The anthropology department welcomes students, staff and faculty to an open house on Sept. 11 from 1:30-3 p.m. in Room 1416. If you have wondered exactly what anthropology is, and what anthropologists do, this is the event for you. Feel free to drop by for a few minutes, or stay for the duration. There will be literature, resources, and articles about anthropology as well as information on career paths available for those who earn a degree in anthropology. VETERANS DAY COMMITEE SEEKS MEMBERS

Did you know that Fullerton College has more than 650 veteran-students? This is up from 375 in just three years. In order to give veteran-students and other veterans in our college community the celebration they deserve, a Veterans Day Celebration Planning Committee is in development. Faculty and staff, who are interested in planning the 2014 Veterans Day activities are asked to contact Paul McKinley at pmckinley@fullcoll.edu.   

 

ART FACULTY BIENNIAL EXHIBIT THROUGH 10/8
The 2014 Art Faculty Biennial Exhibition is open to the public through Oct. 8, and features work from faculty and staff. These artists generate works that are both compelling and complex, utilizing a variety of styles, concepts, and techniques. Admission is always free and open to the public.

Grant Awarded: Congratulations to The Library/Learning Resources, Instructional Support Programs and Services Division for securing a $2,000 grant from Target Stores to support their children's literature offerings as well as the college's KinderCaminata program.


Paper Accepted: 
Biology 104 (Biology of Insects and Spiders) student Hannah Oberle and natural sciences Professor Lenny Vincent had their paper, "A new record of a Neotropical spider, Metazygia zilloides (Banks, 1898) (Araneae: Araneidae), recently established in Southern California," accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed Journal of the Pan-Pacific Entomological Society. Oberle is the seventh Biology 104 student to publish.

 

GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKE-OUT SET FOR 10/16

Please save the date for the annual Great California Shake Out. The statewide earthquake drill will take place Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m.

Fall training will focus on the Full Grade Center in Blackboard Learn 9.1. Other topics in Blackboard Learn will be covered upon request. Instructors are invited to participate in an open lab format using their Full Grade Center.

FOOD BANK COLLECTION, TRAINING UNDERWAY
The Inter-Club Council (ICC) is leading efforts throughout the fall semester to collect non-perishable food items for Fullerton College Chris Chris Lamm Memorial Food Bank. Donation boxes are available at a variety of locations on campus. Training for those wishing to volunteer at the food bank will be conducted the second Tuesday of each month from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. To learn more about volunteering and the donation collection, please contact Jullean Cardenas at jcardenas@fullcoll.edu.
  
SECOND ANNUAL SHOE DRIVE HELD UNTIL 9/30
The Fullerton College Chris Lamm Memorial Food Bank and the Anaheim Salvation Army are co-sponsoring the college's second annual Shoe Drive. There will be collection boxes on campus, at the Fullerton College Foundation Office and at the NOCCCD offices on the eight and ninth floors. The Salvation Army will give the Food Bank $.75 per pound of shoes collected. For questions, please contact Dr. Vanessa Miller at ext. 27093 or vmiller@fullcoll.edu.

Former students will tell you that the Cadena Transfer Center is a key reason they were able to transfer. Encourage your students to attend as many of their workshops as possible to make sure they are on target to transfer.

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP
FOOTBALL: It was not the smoothest win for Fullerton College, but the Hornets were able to put it in gear taking over the game in the second half to win 29-10 at Shapell Stadium Saturday night. Up Next: The Hornets (1-0) will hit the road at Mt. San Antonio for a tough match-up on Saturday, Sept. 13. Kick off is at 6 p.m.

 

CROSS COUNTRY: The Hornets opened their season with a bang at the Palomar Invitational last Friday as the women's team placed first overall and the men's team took third place. Up Next: FC will run in the SoCal Preview at Woodley Park in Van Nuys on Friday, Sept. 19, at 9 a.m.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Lady Hornets knocked off Palomar College 2-0 on the road on Tuesday and then fell short 2-0 at home against Rio Hondo College. Up Next: Fullerton (2-1) hits the road against L.A. Harbor College on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 p.m.

 

MEN'S SOCCER: Fullerton won their season opener 3-1 at Southwestern College last Tuesday and then tied on the road 0-0 at Glendale College on Friday. Up Next: FC will host Compton College on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Game time is at 5 p.m.

 

WOMEN'S GOLF: Under new head coach John Winek, the FC golf team placed fourth last Wednesday (out of nine teams) at the Orange Empire Conference Event No. 1 at the Santa Rosa Golf Course. Up Next: The Hornets will play at the Soboba Golf Course in the OEC Event No. 2 this Wednesday, Sept. 10. Tee time is at 11 a.m.
