TARGET-SPONSORED STORY TIME AT KINDERCAMINATA A SUCCESS

KinderCaminata participants were invited to the library for a Target-sponsored Sneetches story time on Friday, May 2, 2014. Once inside, the kindergartners were treated to storytelling by Systems Librarian Erica Bennett, Library Assistant Betsy Murray, and Acquisitions Librarian Monique Delatte Starkey. Visitors discovered that the children's books may be checked out, and that the read-aloud children's collection at The Fullerton College Library is sponsored through a generous grant from Target. Sneetches bookmarks, also Target-sponsored, were distributed by LIB 100 students to help the young visitors remember their library visit.

IRREVOCABLE TRUST WORKSHOPS ON MAY 16

For some time now, the NOCCCD has wrestled with the increasing costs of retiree health benefits. The District's current unfunded liability for the Retiree Benefit Fund is over $100 million, and we are not in full compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements. To begin to rectify this situation, NOCCCD plans to create an irrevocable trust to better invest our assets and meet the requirements of GASB.

In order to explore the many trust options, NOCCCD has assembled knowledgeable and experienced experts in the areas of accounting, legal actuary, and consulting to present an overview to the GASB compliance guidelines and the steps that the District needs to take to create the irrevocable trust. Workshop sessions will be held on May 16 at the following dates and times:

Fullerton College

8-9:30 a.m.

College Center Rooms 224-228

Anaheim Campus

STUDENT MENTORS NEEDED FOR CALIFORNIA COUSINS PROGRAM
The International Student Center is recruiting mentors for the California Cousins Program. This program connects Fullerton College students with incoming international students to help ease the transition to the United States, Orange County, and college life in general. Mentor applications are available online here and are due by May 23. Student mentors must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, be willing to participate in the California Cousin Program for at least two semesters, and have attended Fullerton College for at least one semester. Mentors can earn community service learning hours, participate in free field trips, and develop lifelong friendships with people from around the world.
BOOK SELECTED FOR 2014-15 "FULLERTON READS" PROGRAM
The "Fullerton Reads: One Book, One College, One City" committee at Fullerton College is pleased to announce the common book for the 2014-2015 academic year: The Pact: Three Young Men Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream by Sampson Davis, George Jenkins and Rameck Hunt. The three authors grew up in and around the projects of Newark, New Jersey, and made a pact to attend medical school together. Against incredible odds, including lack of male role models, substance abuse, and incarcerations, the three now practice medicine.

This selection is appropriate to use in English, Reading, Speech, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, Education, Child Development, Psychology, Counseling, and Political Science courses.

Campus and community events connected to the book will take place in the fall and spring semesters.

For more information, please contact Kim Orlijan: [email protected].
