PURCHASE TICKETS TO CENTENNIAL GALA BY MAY 12

The Fullerton College Centennial Gala, "Among the Stars," will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 6-10 p.m. on the campus quad.

The night marks the culmination of the Centennial year and the induction of the first honorees into the Fullerton College Hall of Fame. The inductees are: 

  • Leo Fender, inventor of the Fender Stratocaster and alumnus
  • Sara McFerrin, former opera soloist and Fullerton College instructor
  • Patricia Nixon, former First Lady of the United States and alumna
  • Louis Plummer, former Fullerton College Superintendent
  • Honorable Cruz Reynoso, retired California State Supreme Court Justice and alumnus
  • Hal Sherbeck, former Fullerton College national championship football coach

The evening will include dinner, dancing, musical performances, and video tributes. Tickets are now available for purchase here through May 12. Admission is $30 per guest or $50 per couple. For more information, visit www.fullcoll100.com/gala

STUDENT ART EXHIBITION AND SISTER CITY MURAL DEDICATION 

All are invited to attend opening night of the Student Art Exhibition and the dedication of a Sister City Mural this Thursday, May 1 at 5 pm, just outside the campus Art Gallery. The event will feature a brief lecture by mural artist Rivera Novoa, the mural unveiling and the announcement of the Student Art Exhibition winners. 

 

Art Department faculty collaborated with artist Rivera Novoa to create the mural, which will reside in the Art Building's central staircase. 

The annual Student Art Exhibition presents the best student artwork created during the academic year. Prizes are awarded to the students who demonstrate the highest artistic merit. Many works will be available for purchase.
19TH ANNUAL KINDERCAMINATA EVENT TO HONOR DR. CHRIS LAMM
The 19th annual KinderCaminata event will be held on Friday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. Through a campus-wide collaboration, approximately 1,400 local kindergartners will experience a college campus, learn about careers and have fun as they explore what they want to be when they grow up.


This year's event marks the first without Dr. Chris Lamm, who led and organized the event for 18 years. In her honor, this year's event will highlight her personal motto, "In Peace and Understanding." 

STUDENT MENTORS NEEDED FOR CALIFORNIA COUSINS PROGRAM
The International Student Center is recruiting mentors for the California Cousins Program. This program connects Fullerton College students with incoming international students to help ease the transition to the United States, Orange County, and college life in general. Mentor applications are available online here and are due by May 23. Student mentors must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, be willing to participate in the California Cousin Program for at least two semesters, and have attended Fullerton College for at least one semester. Mentors can earn community service learning hours, participate in free field trips, and develop lifelong friendships with people from around the world.
EMPLOYEES ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND UPCOMING COFFEES WITH THE BOARD AND CHANCELLOR
All staff and faculty and invited to attend one of the upcoming Coffees with the Board of Trustees and Chancellor. The coffees are informal gatherings for staff, faculty and students to ask questions, and have a dialogue with Board members and the Chancellor. Each campus hosts one Coffee per semester, and employees are welcome to attend either of the two remaining Coffees at their convenience.

SPRING PLANT SALE
The Horticulture Department's Spring Plant Sale will take place on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Sunday, May 4 from noon - 3 p.m.; and Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Plants for sale include California native & drought tolerant plants, herbaceous perennials, shade plants, house plants, vines, succulents, herbs, and seasonal and perennial vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers. 
RETIREE BENEFITS FORUM - SAVE THE DATE

A benefits forum will take place on Friday, May 16 at 8 a.m. in the College Center, Rooms 224-228. Additional information will be distributed shortly. 

FULLERTON COLLEGE FOUNDATION HOSTING TRAIN STATION BARBECUE
The Fullerton College Foundation is hosting a Train Station Barbecue, in conjunction with the City of Fullerton's Annual Railroad Days. The barbecue will take place on both Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3, with seating available at 5 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 per person and also include special access to Railroad Days. CALWORKS AND CARE PREPARING FOR ANNUAL STUDENT RECOGNITION LUNCHEON: DONATIONS NEEDED

The CalWORKs and CARE programs are preparing for the Annual Student Parents Recognition Luncheon, taking place on Friday, May 9 in the Historic Library Courtyard. The event celebrates the successes and acknowledges the daily struggles these parents face in order to complete their education, achieve self-sufficiency, and create a brighter future for their children.

 

In the past, the generosity of Fullerton College faculty and staff has ensured that each student in attendance receives a $15 Target gift card. This year, event organizers hope to raise enough money to purchase gift cards for all 50 attendees.  

 

Please send tax-deductible donations to Lizzete Garcia in the EOPS Office by Monday, May 5. Checks should be made payable to "Fullerton College."  

POET MICHAEL MILLER FEATURED AT VISITING WRITER EVENT

The Fullerton College English Department and Humanities Division are hosting well-regarded poet Michael Miller at the 30th Biannual Visiting Writer event on Tuesday, April 29 at 3 pm in the Wilshire Auditorium.   Miller hails from Fullerton and has published two books of poetry.  He also owns Moon Tide Press, dedicated to showcasing talented and cutting-edge Southern California poets.  Tickets are available for $6.50 at the Fullerton College Box Office.

NOCCCD BUDGET ALLOCATION MODEL FORUM SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 29

All employees are invited to attend the NOCCCD Budget Allocation Model Forum, scheduled for Tuesday, April 29 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in room 224. District representatives, including Vice Chancellor of Finance and Facilities Fred Williams, will detail how funds are allocated throughout the district and answer any questions participants may have about fiscal distribution. 

FULLERTON COLLEGE GOOD NEWS CORNER

Fullerton College Student Aditya Menon won second place in Persuasion at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association (PSCFA) Novice Championship over the weekend. Aditya's speech was on improving swimming pool safety.

Saturday at the PSCFA Debate Championship, students Zach Turner and Rafael Hilario went 2-2 in debate, with Zach winning second-best speaker of the tournament. U.S. foreign policy towards Ukraine and the Affordable Care Act were among the topics debated.

And on Friday at Cal State Northridge, Zach and Kenneth Baer were top-10 speaker award winners, while the teams of Turner & Hilario finished fifth, and Baer and teammate Sarah Benedict captured third place.   

 

Mathematics faculty member Dana Clahane referred journal articles in Complex Analysis and Operator Theory and the Banach Journal of Mathematical Analysis. He also led the "Connections between the Riemann Hypothesis and Differential Equations" discussion at the Azusa Pacific University Mathematics Department Colloquium.  

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP
WOMEN'S TENNIS: BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPS! In a championship rematch from last year between the Fullerton College and Sierra College women, Fullerton once again had the upper hand, defeating Sierra 5-2 and earning their second State title in as many years. The Hornet duo of Sarah Anderson and Sarah Edwards won the state title in doubles-play.

TRACK & FIELD: The Hornets hosted the Orange Empire Conference Championships last Friday with Daisy Esparza winning the 10K and taking second in the 5K. Six Hornets from the women's team qualified for the SoCal Championships. The men's team will also send six athletes on to the SoCal Championships, held at Riverside City College, May 2-3.

BASEBALL: Fullerton's Oliver Jackson delivered the winning hit in a must-win game to defeat Irvine Valley College 3-2 at home on Thursday. The Hornets ended their season just missing the playoffs with a very respectable overall record of 22-14.

SOFTBALL: In the final game of the season, the Hornets beat Golden West College 12-4 at home Wednesday afternoon. Head Coach Speedy Mendoza acknowledged each Hornet sophomore for their efforts on the field this season, which included CF Alyssa Nava, 1B Alexandria Avila, P Alyssa Felipe, 3B Breana Pineda, and SS Elesiah Weiston.
