You're Invited to
"Walk in Her Shoes"

Tuesday, April 22
12:30- 1:00 p.m.

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Week, the Political Science Student Association is sponsoring "Walk in Her Shoes" a fundraiser for two great organizations that provide education and support for sexual assault victims:  Sexual Assault Victim & Prevention Resources (part of Community Service Programs) and Strength Against Violence.

For "Walk in Her Shoes" - the men of Fullerton College will wear high heels for their walk in the Quad to bring awareness and donations to this cause. Most student clubs will be participating and we have quite a few student walkers.  We'd like to encourage as many administrators, staff, and faculty members as possible to participate.  Encourage your students to come to the event and support you.   There is no registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to raise at least $20 in donations.

If you're interested, please let me know: jbalma@fullcoll.edu

Study Abroad

Dispatches from Study Abroad Spain

A current study abroad student in Seville, Spain, Alicia Razo, has some advice and wants to share her experience for prospective study abroad students.

"Study Abroad: do it. The two years of planning to study abroad was stressful and exciting. This was something that was bigger than me since I have never been further than Mexico or on a plane! I prepared myself, listened to the advice from others, and stayed positive. After that, everything seem to be much more fun. My first impression of Spain, Seville was that it looked like LA and I was disappointed until I saw how beautiful Seville was at night. One of the tour guides here said that most people think that Sevillians go out every night, but they don't; they just haven't gone home yet. One of my favorite things to do here in Seville is walk down the streets alone and finding a new pathway to experience. The only way I can describe that feeling is to describe it as a ball of energy and think this is true happiness. Some of the highlights here in Spain was taking a Flamenco class, visiting the Mosque in Cordoba, and experiencing The Lion King Broadway show in Spanish!

Planning for this Study Abroad experience is not for the faint heart. It is intense! And after paying for the whole program, the next challenge is staying motivated to do homework when outside there are people celebrating because it is a Tuesday. I think I want to stay here forever. This is the highlight of my college experience and I am enjoying every day. I say if you're up for the challenge, do it!"

You have the opportunity to Study Abroad next year in Rome.  What's stopping you?

Writing Center Workshops
The Writing Center offers various workshops throughout the semester to help you develop your writing skills. You do not need to register, but arrive early to ensure you get a space. Room 808

These are the upcoming workshops:

Tuesday, April 22, 3:00-4:30
How to Avoid Indirect Language (Geoff Arnold)
Over-using the passive voice and depending on I, you, and we pronouns can sap an essay of critical details and length. Editing your
writing for these two issues will help your papers better express their ideas in a direct fashion.

Wednesday, April 23, 3:00-4:00
Introductions and Conclusions (Kim Orlijan)
You only have one chance to make a first impression, and the same holds true for writing. It's also true that the last word can be the
most powerful one in a discussion. If the pressure to begin and end your writing effectively produces anxiety or writer's block, come
to this workshop for ideas, strategies, and suggestions for writing strong introductions and conclusions. Students are encouraged to
bring drafts of essays they are writing.

Thursday, April 24, 4:00-5:00
Sentence Combining (D.B. Magee)
How can you write sentences that are more sophisticated? How can the appropriate use of the comma help you to accomplish this
sophistication? This workshop will introduce you to a variety of sentence structures to make your writing more interesting and
readable.
