SOCIAL SCIENCES' JODI BALMA NAMED 2014 TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Political Science professor Jodi Balma was recently named the
2014 Fullerton College Teacher of the Year! It is her passion for teaching and dedication to her students that helped Jodi secure the honor.

 

Jodi joined the Political Science Department in 2000 and currently teaches American Government, Honors American Government, Contemporary Issues in American Government, California Government, and Capital Field Trip: Sacramento Seminar.  As the Coordinator of the Honors Program, Jodi enjoys oversees the college's Honor's Ambassador Program and also invites noted political figures to her classes as guest speakers. She received both her B.A. and M.P.A. from CSU Fullerton.

She was selected 2014 Teacher of the Year from a group of finalists by a committee composed of members of the Associated Students Curriculum & Education Committee and the Faculty Senate. The four other finalists were Mathematics Josh Danufsky, Humanities' Deidre Hughes, Natural Sciences Dr. Mary Nolan-Riegle, and Natural Sciences Dr. Jo Wen Wu.
 

EMPLOYEES ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND UPCOMING COFFEES WITH THE BOARD AND CHANCELLOR
All staff and faculty and invited to attend one of the upcoming Coffees with the Board of Trustees and Chancellor. The coffees are informal gatherings for staff, faculty and students to ask questions, and have a dialogue with Board members and the Chancellor. Each campus hosts one Coffee per semester, and employees are welcome to attend either of the two remaining Coffees at their convenience.

FULLERTON COLLEGE NOW HIRING 2014-15 STUDENT AMBASSADORS

Fullerton College is currently hiring Student Ambassadors for the 2014-15 academic year. To qualify, students must meet the following qualifications:

  • Make a one year commitment to the Ambassador Program
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units during the fall and spring semester
  • Must have attended at least 2 semesters at the college
  • Have excellent public speaking skills
  • Have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have reliable transportation to and from Fullerton College, local high schools and community organizations
  • Being bilingual is an advantage, but not a requirement

Applications are due no later than this Friday, April 11. More information is available here

HEALTH SERVICES HOSTING ANNUAL SPRING HEALTH FAIR THIS WEEK

Health Services is hosting its Annual Spring Health Fair on Thursday, April 10, from 10 am - 1 pm on the Quad.  The fair will include free blood pressure, glucose, chiropractic and dental screenings, as well as live DJ music, free giveaways, and over 40 health organizations providing life-saving information.  A crashed car provided by Mothers Against Drunk Driving will also be displayed between the 300 and 500 buildings for the entire week of to remind everyone about the dangers of drinking and driving.  

POET MICHAEL MILLER FEATURED AT VISITING WRITER EVENT

The Fullerton College English Department and Humanities Division are hosting well-regarded poet Michael Miller at the 30th Biannual Visiting Writer event on Tuesday, April 29 at 3 pm in the Wilshire Auditorium.   Miller hails from Fullerton and has published two books of poetry.  He also owns Moon Tide Press, dedicated to showcasing talented and cutting-edge Southern California poets.  Tickets are available for $6.50 at the Fullerton College Box Office.

NOCCCD BUDGET ALLOCATION MODEL FORUM SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 29

All employees are invited to attend the NOCCCD Budget Allocation Model Forum, scheduled for Tuesday, April 29 from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm in room 224. District representatives, including Vice Chancellor of Finance and Facilities Fred Williams, will detail how funds are allocated throughout the district and answer any questions participants may have about fiscal distribution. 

FINANCIAL AID AWARENESS WEEK: APRIL 7-10

Fullerton College is celebrating Financial Aid Week from Monday, April 7 through Thursday, April 10. Various sessions will focus on the FAFSA, financial aid basics, and important changes in financial aid.

CADENA-TRANSER CENTER EXPLORES TRANSFER OPTIONS AT ANNUAL TRANSFER AWARENESS WEEK

The Cadena-Transfer Center is celebrating Transfer Awareness Week through Friday.The Transfer Center will host a variety of events designed to prepare students for the transfer process. There have been some dramatic changes to transfer requirements recently (especially at CSUF), so it is more important than ever for students to connect with counselors and the Transfer Center. Please share the schedule of events with students.

SCHOLARSHIP DONATIONS SOUGHT FOR MEN AND WOMEN OF DISTINCTION

Each spring, 30 Fullerton College students are named Men and Women of Distinction. The students are nominated by administrators, faculty, staff and classmates, and have distinguished themselves in a wide variety of diverse areas, such as scholarship, divisional, departmental, contributions and service to the college. In years past, each student has received a scholarship, however, due to budget shortfalls, additional contributions are needed this year.

 

Donations are being sought from Fullerton College faculty and staff to ensure the scholarships continue. Checks, made payable to Fullerton College with the subject "M&WoD Scholarship, are being accepted by Associated Students now through Wednesday, April 30. 

FULLERTON COLLEGE GOOD NEWS CORNER
English Department faculty member Bruce Henderson delivered a paper entitled "Amiri Baraka as Poet Laureate of Resistance" at the recent American Comparative Literature Association meeting in New York City.English Department faculty members Bruce Henderson delivered a paper entitled "Amiri Baraka as Poet Laureate of Resistance" at the recent American Comparative Literature Association meeting in New York City.

The Associated Students received the American Red Cross Platinum Award during the American Red Cross Sponsor Recognition Breakfast. This honor was received due to the group's efforts in the collection of 460 Units of blood during the 2013 Blood Donor Days. The Platinum Award, representing 1,380 lives potentially being saved, will be proudly displayed in the A.S. Office.

The Fullerton College William Lowell Putnam Competition team achieved its highest score ever - 19 - at the recent national competition. Hiep Nguyen tied for 1324th out of 4,113 students competing while his teammate Vinh Tran came in 1,659th.

Fullerton College debaters captured numerous awards at the CSUF Public Forum Debate Tournament, held in late March. The debate teams of Zach Turner & Doan Truong and Aditya Menon & Rafael Hilario and Kenneth Baer & Sarah Bennet had identical 2-1 preliminary round records. Making it to elimination rounds, Turner and Truong (5th) and Aditya & Hilario (6th) all earned top-team awards. Turner also was awarded the tournament's 6th-best speaker, and Aditya Menon took home the 1st-place speaker award. Kenneth Baer was the tournament's 9th-best speaker.
