All staff and faculty and invited to attend one of the upcoming Coffees with the Board of Trustees and Chancellor. The coffees are informal gatherings for staff, faculty and students to ask questions, and have a dialogue with Board members and the Chancellor. Each campus hosts one Coffee per semester, and employees are welcome to attend any or all of the three Coffees at their convenience.

THIRD ANNUAL ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER FORUM WILL FEATURE AUTHOR DR. NHI LIEU 

The Cadena Cultural Center, Ethnic Studies Department, and the Asian and Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Association are hosting the Third Annual Asian and Pacific Islander Forum on Monday, March 24 at 11:45 am in room 224. 

 

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Nhi T. Lieu, author of The American Dream in Vietnamese, which explores the popular culture of the Vietnamese diaspora, examining how people displaced by war reconstruct cultural identity in the aftermath of migration. She is also the author of Beautiful Citizenship: Transnational Asian/American Embodied Practices in the Age Neoliberal Capitalism.  

SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNSELOR SOUGHT FOR ANNUAL FAMILY AND HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR NIGHT

Fullerton College is hosting its Annual Family and High School Senior Night on Wednesday, April 30.  The event will include a Spanish-language session at 7 pm and the event organizers are seeking a Spanish-speaking counselor to facilitate the session.  Any interested counselors are asked to contact Dr. Rolando Sanabria. Those who are chosen may count the hour as part of load or exchange time.

NOCCCD BUDGET ALLOCATION MODEL FORUM SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 29

All employees are invited to attend the NOCCCD Budget Allocation Model Forum, scheduled for Tuesday, April 29 from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm in room 224. District representatives, including Vice Chancellor of Finance and Facilities Fred Williams, will detail how funds are allocated throughout the district and answer any questions participants may have about fiscal distribution. 

PRESIDENT OF RAMPART RECORDS TO DISCUSS LEGACY OF CHICANO ROCK AND ROLL THIS THURSDAY

The Ethnic Studies Department, in conjunction with the Cadena Cultural center, is sponsoring a lecture on The Legacy of Chicano Rock and Roll with Hector Gonzalez, President of Rampart Records and an Emmy Award Winner. The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, March 27 at 11:45 am in room 224. 

ALL FULLERTON COLLEGE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES MUST RECEIVE APPROVAL FROM INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD

Before starting any research activities at Fullerton College or on behalf of Fullerton College, employees must receive approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB). In accordance with the Federal Regulations, the Fullerton College IRB is a committee of scientists, non-scientists, and community members who review and approve or disapprove proposed research involving human participants to protect their rights and welfare. ONE BOOK, ONE COLLEGE, ONE CITY AUTHOR HECTOR TOBAR ON CAMPUS APRIL 1

The Fullerton College Humanities Division is hosting an evening with One Book, One College, One City author Hector Tobar on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 pm in the Wilshire Auditorium. Tobar will discuss and read excerpts from his book, The Barbarian Nurseries. A book signing will follow the formal presentation. Prior to the event, faculty and staff are invited to attend a reception in Tobar's honor, from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm in room 224. The event is free and no RSVP is needed.

 

On Monday, April 7, art historian Juliea Shriver will present an illustrated talk on art and the artists referred to in The Barbarian Nurseries. The event is also free and will take place at 10 am in room 224.

FULLERTON COLLEGE GOOD NEWS CORNER

Fashion Department faculty member Renee Young was selected as one of the recipients of the American Sewing Guild-OC Educator Scholarships for Spring 2014. Awards will be presented at the chapter's Fashion Show on March 29, at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim.

Long-time Puente Mentor, Denise Alvarado, presented Puente coordinators, Elias Dominguez and Elli England with a $400.00 check from the Alpha Delta Kappa-Gamma Tau Sorority. The money will go toward the Annual Puente Fundraiser which supports a University tour to Northern California. Students will depart on Wednesday, April 9 for a four-day tour of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Davis, Sacramento and Berkeley.

Several current and former Fullerton College students gave talks at the Pacific Coast Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (PCUMC), held at Pepperdine University. Those students are: Joon Choi (FC), Faith Forcucci (FC), Alex Goldman (Valencia High School & FC), Nate Hovey (FC), Caleb Kunchandy (FC), Viet Luu (FC), Alfredo Velez (FC), and Khoi Vo (UCLA, formerly of OCC & FC).  

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

BASEBALL: The Hornets took one on the nose on Saturday as Saddleback College came to Hornet Field handing Fullerton a 7-1 loss. The loss gives FC an overall record of 17-6 and an OEC record of 7-3. Saddleback's win tied the Hornets for first place in the Orange Empire Conference at 7-3 (15-7 overall). Up Next:  The season series is now tied at one a piece with Fullerton visiting Saddleback this Tuesday, March 25. Game time is 2 pm.

 

SOFTBALL: Fullerton dropped an Orange Empire Conference game on the road last Friday at Saddleback College 6-5. Up Next: The Hornets will look to stop their four-game skid when they host Santa Ana College this Tuesday, March 25. Game time is 3 pm.

 

SWIM & DIVE: The FC Swim & Dive squad traveled up north to the College of San Mateo to compete against DeAnza, Solano, Foothill, San Mateo, and Chabot Colleges. The Fullerton women's team had a great meet taking first place overall and the Fullerton men's team placed well taking third. Up Next: The Pasadena City College Invitational, April 4-5. 

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS: The Fullerton College women's tennis team kept their winning ways going last Thursday knocking off tough conference rival Irvine Valley College 6-3 on the road. Up Next: The 2013 state and conference champions will travel to Riverside City College for a tough match-up on Thursday March 27. Matches will begin at 2 pm.

 

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD: It was a busy week for the men's track & field team as they competed in three separate events from Thursday to Saturday. On Thursday, FC hosted the OEC Decathlon Championship, and freshmen Javier Weatherspoon and Rudy Membrano were ready to put their training to test.  Weatherspoon won the discus event and took second in javelin. He finished fourth overall. Membrano won the 1500 meters and finished ninth overall. On Friday, the Hornets visited Occidental College. Brandon Velasco placed 12th overall in the 10,000 meters while Pablo Perez won the 800 meters. Jonathan Baek competed in the open 400 and ran a seasonal record of 53.94 taking fourth place in his heat respectfully. Freshman Gavin Proctor ran a very respectful 23.28 for 2nd place in the 200 meters.

 

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: A ten year school record was broken in the 10,000 meters at the Occidental College Invitational last Friday night. Sophomore Daisy Esparza broke the Fullerton College record, held since 2004, by more than 20 seconds. On Saturday, the Lady Hornets competed against other community college, university and open athletes at the Ben Brown Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton.  Vanessa Franco ran for second in her heat for the 400M Hurdles in 1:10.35.  Tia Streeter stood on the line for her 800M run and finished third in her heat and a personal best in 2:23.38.

Bob Marley gave the credit for his song "No Woman, No Cry" to a friend who ran a soup kitchen to ensure the royalty checks would keep it open.
