DISTRICT HOSTING STRATEGIC CONVERSATION IN LATE MARCH

The North Orange County Community College District is hosting Strategic Conversation #15, The Changing Role of Faculty, Staff, Administrators, and Students. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 25 in the Cypress College Theatre Lobby and will begin with refreshments at 3:30 pm and the actual conversation at 4:30 pm.

THIRD ANNUAL ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER FORUM WILL FEATURE AUTHOR DR. NHI LIEU 

The Cadena Cultural Center, Ethnic Studies Department, and the Asian and Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Association are hosting the Third Annual Asian and Pacific Islander Forum on Monday, March 24 at 11:45 am in room 224. 

 

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Nhi T. Lieu, author of The American Dream in Vietnamese, which explores the popular culture of the Vietnamese diaspora, examining how people displaced by war reconstruct cultural identity in the aftermath of migration. She is also the author of Beautiful Citizenship: Transnational Asian/American Embodied Practices in the Age Neoliberal Capitalism.  

EMPLOYEES ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND UPCOMING COFFEES WITH THE BOARD AND CHANCELLOR
All staff and faculty and invited to attend one of the upcoming Coffees with the Board of Trustees and Chancellor. The coffees are informal gatherings for staff, faculty and students to ask questions, and have a dialogue with Board members and the Chancellor. Each campus hosts one Coffee per semester, and employees are welcome to attend any or all of the three Coffees at their convenience.

FOOD BANK HOSTING SPAGHETTI LUNCH FUNDRAISER ON APRIL 3

The Fullerton College Food Bank is hosting a Spaghetti Lunch Fundraiser for the Chris Lamm Memorial Food Bank. The lunch will take place on Thursday, April 3 from 11 :30 am - 1:30 pm in the Campus Dining Room. Presale tickets are available for $7 and must be purchased no later than Monday, March 31 from the EOPS Office, Vice President of Student Services Office, and the Switchboard. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door for $9. Each ticket includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert, and lemonade.

ASSOCIATED STUDENTS ACCEPTING 2014-2015 ELECTION APPLICATIONS

The Associated Students are currently accepting application for 2014-2015 elected positions, including president, vice president, treasurer, student trustee, InterClub Council President, and senator. Applications are available in the Student Affairs Office and are due back no later than Tuesday, March 25 at 2 pm.

 

Elections will take place from Tuesday, April 8 through Thursday, April 10 on the Quad. 

CLASSIFIED SENATE SEEKING EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION AWARD NOMINATIONS
The Classified Senate is accepting nominations for the Spring 2014 Classified Employee Recognition Award during the entire month of March. Nominations may be submitted by administrators, faculty, staff or students, and are designed to recognize a classified professional that is knowledgeable, committed to the college mission, and has provided service that is above and beyond "the call of duty."  Nomination forms are available on the Classified Senate website. 

  

Nomination criteria is as follows:

  • All nominees must be permanent full/part-time classified employees of Fullerton College, worked in the District for a minimum of five years, and be in good standing 
  • Employees may receive more than one nomination and each nomination must be individualized 
  • Nominations must be submitted on the Classified Employee Recognition Nomination form  
The winner will be announced at the Classified Senate End-of-Year Event, scheduled for Thursday, April 24.      
AUTHOR AND RESEARCHER DR. JOY DEGRUY WILL PRESENT DAY-LONG WORKSHOP AT FULLERTON COLLEGE 
Nationally renowned author, researcher, and educator Dr. Joy DeGruy will visit Fullerton College on Friday, March 28 as part of the North Orange County Community College District's Distinguished Lecture Series. Her workshop, Culturally Specific Models of Service Delivery and Academic Practice, will take place in room 224 from 9 am - 2:30 pm.

Dr. DeGruy's extensive research lays  the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the many adaptive survival behaviors of African Americans. She is the author of the book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing. Her workshop couples evidence-based models and culturally responsive intervention approaches. Thus, the values, customs and traditions that characterize and distinguish different groups of people, become the tools through which to proceed in assisting, supporting and strengthening students towards 
academic success.

FULLERTON COLLEGE GOOD NEWS CORNER

Journalism student James Macias is a semifinalist in the Entertainment Industries Council's Generation Next Competition. He is currently writing a story on issues surrounding mental health and how they affectunderserved populations. Winners will be announced in early April and will receive a $4,000 cash award.  

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

BASEBALL: After beating Orange Coast College 3-1 on the road Tuesday, the Hornets kept it going at home on Thursday handing Irvine Valley a 5-2 loss. The win gives FC an overall record of 15-5 with an Orange Empire Conference record of 5-2 while the Laser loss lands them at 6-13 overall and 2-5 in the OEC. Up Next: The Hornets will host Golden West College this Tuesday, March 18 at 2 pm. 


SOFTBALL: The Hornets hosted Golden West College for an Orange Empire Conference match-up on Tuesday, March 10 and enforced the mercy rule on the Rustlers 12-4 in five innings. Unfortunately, the team lost to rival Cypress College, 3-0, on the road Wednesday afternoon. Up Next: The Hornets will take on Riverside this Wednesday, March 19 at 3 pm.


FOOTBALL: Defensive Back Darius Lewis signed with Northern Arizona University last week. Lewis played one season for the Hornets where he helped the team to the state championship game with 57 tackles (34 solo/23 assisted), one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one interception.
