BEN JACKEL NAMED 2014 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE; EXHIBIT NOW THROUGH MARCH 31

The Fullerton College Art Gallery has chosen Ben Jackel as the 2014 Artist in Residence. Jackel will be exhibiting ceramic and wood sculptures, including new works available for purchase. His exhibition will be accompanied by an artist lecture and a weeklong series of demonstrations as part of the distinguished Fullerton College Artist in Residence program.

Jackel's exhibit will run though Monday, March 31 and he will conduct a series of demonstrations the week of March 24 and a lecture on Wednesday, March 26 at 7 pm in the Wilshire Auditorium. All events are free and open to the public.

Born and raised in Colorado, Ben Jackel received his MFA from UCLA in 2005, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Jackel employs labor-intensive, manual processes to create sculptures in ceramic and wood that are drawn from everyday forms, but whose material transformations defy intended application. Often depicting objects of utility or warfare, Jackel's sculptures often explore his interest in military history and disasters, illustrating profound connections between object and human vulnerability.

AUTHOR AND RESEARCHER DR. JOY DEGRUY WILL PRESENT DAY-LONG WORKSHOP AT FULLERTON COLLEGE
Nationally renowned author, researcher, and educator Dr. Joy DeGruy will visit Fullerton College on Friday, March 28 as part of the North Orange County Community College District's Distinguished Lecture Series. Her workshop, Culturally Specific Models of Service Delivery and Academic Practice, will take place in room 224 from 9 am - 2:30 pm.

Dr. DeGruy's extensive research lays  the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the many adaptive survival behaviors of African Americans. She is the author of the book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing. Her workshop couples evidence-based models and culturally responsive intervention approaches. Thus, the values, customs and traditions that characterize and distinguish different groups of people, become the tools through which to proceed in assisting, supporting and strengthening students towards
academic success.
