Fall Semester: Week 12
Veterans Day

A huge thank you to the Paul McKinley, Scott Thompson, the Veterans Club, the Veterans Resource Center, and everyone else who helped put together last week's Veterans Celebration Week:  the Wall of Remembrance (and those who guarded it 24 hours each day), the film screenings and discussions, the BBQ lunch, and the candlelight ceremony.   The campus community was educated, informed, and inspired.  To all our Fullerton College veterans - faculty, staff, and students: Thank you for your service.

Students are encouraged to attend and speak during public comments if they have something they wanted to address.

Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva will be there and would love to have a packed room for this event.

No Shave November

Fullerton College Men - Cancer Awareness isn't just for women. Even though November has already begun, it's NOT too late to STOP SHAVING.

No-Shave November is a unique way to raise cancer awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free.

In addition, you can donate the money you usually spend on shaving and grooming for a month to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.

Students can participate by growing a beard, cultivating a mustache, letting those legs get mangly, and skipping that waxing or grooming appointment. And if possible, donations would help a great deal for the cause.

Lastly, please spread the word as it would contribute greatly to more resources for the battle against cancer.

Homecoming Football Game

The undefeated Hornets will host the 91st Key to the County game on Saturday, November 16th at Yorba Linda High's Shapell Stadium.  The game will be a special one for all Hornets as it is Fullerton College's homecoming game that will feature a special halftime ceremony honoring former Athletic Trainer Bill Chambers. For 91 years, the football teams from Fullerton College and Santa Ana College have done battle on the gridiron once a year in what is believed by many to be California community college's longest-running football rivalry.  Since their first meeting in 1916, a most-fitting scoreless tie, the two teams have played 90 times in including 68 consecutive years from 1945 to present.

CSUF Educational Symposium

The Center for Research on Educational Access and Leadership (C-REAL) at Cal State Fullerton promotes a vision and mission that focuses on social justice, equity, access, and success for all students. As part of this mission, C-REAL is hosting a symposium titled, "Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity: On Your Campus and In Your Classroom," on December 6 to address the educational concerns of the LGBTQ community.

Educational concerns for LGBTQ students exist in our schools and colleges. Issues include harassment, invisibility, the "coming out" process, gender neutral restrooms, creating safe spaces for interaction, bullying, violence, and negative stereotypes about social characteristics and academic potential.

The main purpose of the symposium is to bring together a series of expert speakers and panelists to address the aforementioned issues that affect our communities and schools.

Seats are limited so make sure you register early at: http://ed.fullerton.edu/c-real

ALL participants must register. Student registration is $30, and non-student registration is $80.

If you're interested in attending, we have a limited number of registration fee waivers available.  Contact Jodi Balma if you're interested.

Seeking Outstanding Students for Scholarship Nomination

Dear Students,

We are pleased to announce that the All-USA Community College Academic Team and the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Programs will continue in 2013.  The collaboration of USA TODAY, Follett Higher Education Group, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation, AACC and Phi Theta Kappa will lead to students being featured in an April issue of USA TODAY and the awarding of nearly $350,000 in scholarships to outstanding community college students.

Two students will be selected as nominees from Fullerton College, and those students will be recognized in the All-State Academic Team.  Fullerton College will fly our academic team to Sacramento to be honored in a ceremony where they will meet their state representatives, get a VIP tour of the Capital Building, and receive a medal.  They will also receive special recognition at the Fullerton College commencement ceremony.

At this time, we are seeking qualified applications.   To qualify, students must be on track to receive an Associates or Bachelors degree, maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA, and must have completed 36 college units. Students do not need to be a members of Phi Theta Kappa.

For more information about the scholarships available, or to apply, please visit:

https://my.ptk.org/edge/

Phi Theta Kappa members may log in using their Phi Theta Kappa username and password.  If they have forgotten their log in, follow the steps on the log in page for "PTK Member Password Recovery."

Non-members may access the application by selecting the link that says "Create an Account" on the log in page.  Non-members should follow the instructions to create an account and view the application.  You do not need to be a PTK member to apply.

Once the student has logged in, he or she should select the link in the center of the page that says "2013 Fall Common Scholarship."  They should follow the instructions and enter the enrollment key when instructed.  The application is a Common Application and Phi Theta Kappa members may apply for separate Phi Theta Kappa Guistwhite, GEICO and/or Hites Transfer Scholarships at the same time as the All-USA Community College Academic Team.

Enrollment code: MDQ4NzYy5214

The application is completed entirely online.  The website allows you to begin working on the application, save your progress, and return to work on it at any time.  This is a good thing because it is a long application.

Applications must be submitted no later than 12:00pm noon on November 15, 2012.

After all applications have been received, we will notify the winners by November 19.

If you have any questions email Brandon Floerke directly:  [email protected]

Personal Statement Tips

Fretting over your personal statement? Fussing about ways to proceed? Then take a break and read some helpful hints from Berkeley, UCI, UCLA and other great schools. These tips derive from meetings over the years with key admissions personnel, as well as from presentations at the National Collegiate Honors Council conference.  I hope you don't think of your essay as something you can do well at the last minute. It takes thought. And time. Teachers who offer workshops in the personal statement advise you to allow several weeks (some say months) to prepare it.

So let's get started - read the full article below:

Personal Statement by Chuck Whitechurch

Here is another informational sheet from UC Santa Barbara to help you write your personal statement for the UC Apps:

http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/Pdf/PersonalStatement.pdf

Research and Conferences

Presenting your academic research at a conference is a great opportunity to set yourself apart from the crowd when you're applying for transfer.  As an honors student, you can apply for the Honors Transfer Council of California's Research Conference next spring (conference date: Saturday, April 5, 2014).  If you're writing a research paper this semester, you can easily use that topic as your presentation material.

More information about the Honors Transfer Council of California Research Conference:  http://htcca.org/students/

You'll need to submit a (catchy) title, 25-word description, 250-word abstract, and your contact information to Jodi Balma by December 15th.

Writing Center Workshops

The Writing Center offers various workshops throughout the semester to help you develop your writing skills. You do not need to register, but arrive early to ensure you get a space.  Room 808

Grammar Help (Jacqueline Cooper)
Learn how to resolve your grammar errors. In this workshop, you will gain a deeper understanding of grammar tenses and aspect to help you break through your grammar barriers.

UCLA's Transfer Alliance Program (TAP)

UCLA's Transfer Alliance Program (TAP) is a collaboration between local community college Honors/Scholars Programs and UCLA College (Letters and Science) in conjunction with Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools. The program is designed to foster academic excellence at the community college level and to promote diversity and retention in the UCLA transfer population. Member community colleges like Fullerton College provide enriched general education curricula emphasizing critical thinking, writing, and research through their Honors programs.

TAP Applications will be available in January in the Honors Office.  Students who are Honors Certified at Fullerton College receive priority consideration for admission to UCLA College (Letters and Science). Admitted TAP students are eligible to apply for scholarships reserved for the Transfer Alliance Program. (FC Honors Alumni Maria Duque and Shayne Wiggins received $5,000 scholarships for the next two years at UCLA as TAP scholars)
