PRESIDENT'S OPEN FORUM
In an effort to encourage communication and strengthen teamwork across campus, President Rajen Vurdien has scheduled a series of Open Forums. The next forum is Monday, October 21 at 2 pm in room 224. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.  The full schedule of forums is available at http://www.fullcoll.edu/president/presidents-open-forum.

FULLERTON COLLEGE PARTICIPATING IN CAMPUS-WIDE EVACUATION AS PART OF THE GREAT SHAKEOUT  
This Thursday, October 17 at 10:17 am, Fullerton College will again be participating in The Great Shakeout, California's state-wide earthquake drill! This drill serves as a reminder that everyone should always be prepared for the "Big One," which could happen at any time.

 

Faculty who have class at 10:17 am are asked to have their students, "Drop, Cover, and Hold On!" The college will then participate in a campus-wide evacuation exercise. Campus Safety will provide each division and department with evacuation instructions.

FULLERTON READS HOSTING DISCUSSION WITH AUTHOR OF BARBARIAN NURSERIES
Hector Tobar, author of this year's Fullerton Reads: One Book, One College, One City selection The Barbarian Nurseries, will make an appearance at the Fullerton Public Library on Sunday, October 20 at 2 pm. The book discusses  his multi-layered journey about immigrant lives, class conflicts, and race and cultural divisions in contemporary Southern California. Books will be available for sale and his talk will be followed by a signing.
HUMANITIES DIVISION HOSTING STUDENT OPEN MIC EVENT THIS TUESDAY
The Humanities Division is hosting a Student Mic event this Tuesday, October 15 from 7 pm - 8:30 pm in room 224. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to read and perform original works of poetry, prose, comedy, and music. Sign-ups will be available the night of the event and pieces must be between three and five minutes.  
FINANCIAL AID OFFICE LOOKING FOR ELIGIBLE STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN FEDERAL STUDY
 Financial Aid needs the help of all faculty and staff. The department is participating is in a federal study and needs students new to Fullerton College this fall, who:
  • have a Bachelor of Arts degree
  • are underemployed or unemployes
  • is currently enrolled in a CTE program

Eligible students may be able to receive Federal Pell Grant funds. Interested students are asked to contact Korey Lindley in the Financial Aid Office.

ANNUAL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS WILL FEATURE SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO DR. CHRIS LAMM
Fullerton College is hosting its Annual Dia de Los Muertos Celebration, on Thursday, October 31, from 6 pm - 10 pm on the Quad.  This year's event is being co-sponsored with the Muckenthaler Cultural Center.

This traditional Mexican holiday honors the dead with altars and ofrendas in their memory. There will be food, music, face-painting, vendors and dancing. The evening is open to families and friends in the surrounding community.

This years event will include a special offrenda in honor of retired faculty member Dr. Chris Lamm, who passed away in June. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to contribute a special memory, flowers, foods, etc. to the offrenda. If interested, please contact Adela Lopez.
WOMEN IN STEM SEMINAR ON OCTOBER 17
Fullerton College graduate and current Chapman University student Luz Jimenez Vela will speak to students interested in STEM at a special event taking place on Thursday, October 17 at 4:30 pm.

While at Fullerton, Jimenez was awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke scholarship and last summer, was a intern at the Europe Orgazination for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.

Men outnumber women in most STEM careers. Currenlty, only 17% of chemical engineers and 22% of environmental scientists are women. Companies want to hire and keep qualified female employees so the future is bright.

CLASSIFIED SENATE SEEKING EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Classified Senate is accepting nominations for the Fall 2013 Classified Employee Recognition Award during the entire month of October. Nominations may be submitted by administrators, faculty, staff or students, and are designed to recognize a classified professional that is knowledgeable, committed to the college mission, and has provided service that is above and beyond "the call of duty."  Nomination forms are available on the Classified Senate website  

 

The winner will be announced at the Classified Senate Meet & Greet, scheduled for Wednesday, November 13.      

FULLERTON COLLEGE GOOD NEWS CORNER
Health Services is holiding a Community Advisory Committee Meeting this week which will include results of the 2013 American College Health and a presentation from Peer Health Educators about student health.

Dr. Jamail Carter, Director of Institutional Research and Planning, has been selected to receive the Young Game Changers Award by the San Bernardino branch of the NAACP. He will be honored at an awards ceremony in early November.
FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP
FOOTBALL: The #2 Hornets knocked off #1 Riverside City College 38-36 at home on Saturday despite committing six turnovers.  Prior to the game, Riverside was ranked 2nd in the nation and Fullerton was ranked 7th according to JCGridwire's Dirty 30.  Up Next: The Hornets (5-0, 1-0) have another tough test when they travel to South Orange County to take on Saddleback College on Saturday, October 19.  Kick off is 6 pm.
 
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL:  The undefeated  Lady Hornets made quick work of Saddleback College last Friday at home sweeping the Gauchos 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-14).  Up Next: FC (10-0, 3-0) will travel to undefeated powerhouse Golden West College on Wednesday, October 16th.  Game time is 6 pm.
 
CROSS COUNTRY:  The Lady Hornets are the 2013 Brubaker Invitational Champions taking 1st place on Friday at Irvine Park. Up Next:  The Hornets will compete in the Orange Empire Conference Championships at Irvine Park on Friday, November 1 at 9:30 am.
 
MEN'S SOCCER:  The Hornets brought down their Orange Empire Conference rival Santa Ana College (#3 in the state) last  Friday 4-2.  Up Next:  Fullerton (7-3-1, 2-1-1) will host Cypress College on October 15t at 3 pm.
 
WOMEN'S GOLF: After taking second place the last five Orange Empire Conference events, the Hornets took first place at Round 7 of the OEC competition at the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course on Wednesday.  Fullerton managed to beat undefeated Palomar College by two strokes.  Up Next: Fullerton will take play at the San Clemente Golf Course on Wednesday, October 23 at 11 am.
 
WOMEN'S WATER POLO: After suffering their first loss of the season to Golden West College (16-2) last Wednesday, Fullerton took part in the Ventura College Tournament over the weekend beating all of the teams they played.  On day one, FC beat El Camino College 16-0 and then followed up with a 15-11 victory over the Santa Barbara Club.  Day two had more wins in store for the Hornets as they beat Ventura College 10-3 and Chaffey College 14-6.  Up Next: Fullerton (16-1, 3-1) hits the road against OEC rival Riverside City College next Wednesday, October 23 at 3 pm.  

BASEBALL: The Hornet Baseball team is hosting a golf tournament on Monday, October 21 at the Yorba Linda Country Club. The entry fee is $175 a person. Dinner tickets are available for $60. For more information, contact coach Nick Fuscardo.
