"The Art of Hope"  November 1st

PTK SPONSORS EXHIBIT TO BENEFIT ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES

Phi Theta Kappa is collaborating with Hope University to present "The Art of HOPE," an exhibit and silent auction at the Fullerton Art Walk. The opening reception is November 1, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Hibbleton Gallery, located at 223 W. Sante Fe Avenue, Fullerton. There will also be a closing reception on November 23 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The students of Fullerton College Phi Theta Kappa have been working on this event since last spring. They began with a desire to do an honors project related to the arts, and through research and discussion, they developed an interest in collaborating with a non profit that works with disabled artists. This led them to Hope University, "a multi-faceted fine arts program for adults with intellectual disabilities designed to serve individuals showing talent, interest or motivation in the arts."

Hope University is a nonprofit organization aiming to "transform the lives of adults with intellectual disabilities through the arts." The exhibit will consist of original work from 20 Hope University artists, and all proceeds will directly benefit their programs and artists. "We believe that individuals with intellectual disabilities have value and deserve opportunities, acceptance, and respect," says Hope University.

Hope University Artistic Director, Shelley Rugg Thorp explains, "We are very pleased and excited to be working with this great group of students on this project. One of our organizational goals is to gain greater exposure for our artists and our organization, and an exhibition at the Hibbleton Gallery in Fullerton provides us with a great opportunity to do just that."

The Hibbleton Gallery is located in the Magoski Art Colony and specializes in street, outsider, lowbrow, graffiti, pop, surrealist, punk, and finger painting. It has been a mainstay of the Fullerton Art Walk since its inception.

Seeking Outstanding Students for Scholarship Nomination

Dear Students,

We are pleased to announce that the All-USA Community College Academic Team and the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Programs will continue in 2013.  The collaboration of USA TODAY, Follett Higher Education Group, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation, AACC and Phi Theta Kappa will lead to students being featured in an April issue of USA TODAY and the awarding of nearly $350,000 in scholarships to outstanding community college students.

Two students will be selected as nominees from Fullerton College, and those students will be recognized in the All-State Academic Team.  Fullerton College will fly our academic team to Sacramento to be honored in a ceremony where they will meet their state representatives, get a VIP tour of the Capital Building, and receive a medal.  They will also receive special recognition at the Fullerton College commencement ceremony.

At this time, we are seeking qualified applications.   To qualify, students must be on track to receive an Associates or Bachelors degree, maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA, and must have completed 36 college units. Students do not need to be a members of Phi Theta Kappa.

For more information about the scholarships available, or to apply, please visit:

https://my.ptk.org/edge/

Phi Theta Kappa members may log in using their Phi Theta Kappa username and password.  If they have forgotten their log in, follow the steps on the log in page for "PTK Member Password Recovery."

Non-members may access the application by selecting the link that says "Create an Account" on the log in page.  Non-members should follow the instructions to create an account and view the application.  You do not need to be a PTK member to apply.

Once the student has logged in, he or she should select the link in the center of the page that says "2013 Fall Common Scholarship."  They should follow the instructions and enter the enrollment key when instructed.  The application is a Common Application and Phi Theta Kappa members may apply for separate Phi Theta Kappa Guistwhite, GEICO and/or Hites Transfer Scholarships at the same time as the All-USA Community College Academic Team.

Enrollment code: MDQ4NzYy5214

The application is completed entirely online.  The website allows you to begin working on the application, save your progress, and return to work on it at any time.  This is a good thing because it is a long application.  Applications must be submitted no later than 12:00 noon on November 15, 2012.  After all applications have been received, we will notify the winners by November 19.

There will be an information meeting on October 16 at 3:00 pm in room 515.  This will take place during the Phi Theta Kappa meeting, but you do not need to be a Phi Theta Kappa member to attend.

If you have any questions email Brandon Floerke directly:  bfloerke@fullcoll.edu

Personal Statement Tips

Fretting over your personal statement? Fussing about ways to proceed? Then take a break and read some helpful hints from Berkeley, UCI, UCLA and other great schools. These tips derive from meetings over the years with key admissions personnel, as well as from presentations at the National Collegiate Honors Council conference.  I hope you don't think of your essay as something you can do well at the last minute. It takes thought. And time. Teachers who offer workshops in the personal statement advise you to allow several weeks (some say months) to prepare it.

So let's get started - read the full article below:

UCLA's Transfer Alliance Program (TAP)

UCLA's Transfer Alliance Program (TAP) is a collaboration between local community college Honors/Scholars Programs and UCLA College (Letters and Science) in conjunction with Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools. The program is designed to foster academic excellence at the community college level and to promote diversity and retention in the UCLA transfer population. Member community colleges like Fullerton College provide enriched general education curricula emphasizing critical thinking, writing, and research through their Honors programs.

This year's TAP Conference is on Friday, November 8th, where prospective transfer students learn about UCLA's academic opportunities and expectations through attending workshops and talking with departmental representatives from academic and campus departments.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about UCLA and we encourage you to attend.

TAP Applications will be available in January in the Honors Office.  Students who are Honors Certified at Fullerton College receive priority consideration for admission to UCLA College (Letters and Science). Admitted TAP students are eligible to apply for scholarships reserved for the Transfer Alliance Program. (FC Honors Alumni Maria Duque and Shayne Wiggins received $5,000 scholarships for the next two years at UCLA as TAP scholars)
