JUMP START TO COLLEGE EVENT WILL BRING 500 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO FULLERTON COLLEGE CAMPUS

On Friday, October 11, 500 ninth grade students from the Fullerton Joint Union High School District will visit the Fullerton College campus as part of the Jump Start to College, a high school outreach pilot program. The Jump Start to College pilot program was created in collaboration by faculty and staff on the Student Success Taskforce in 2012-13. The implementation plan was designed with input from the Fullerton Union Joint High School District and the activities are being coordinated through the Vice President of Student Services office.

The high school district selected "increased awareness of careers" as a priority area of need for their students. The rationale for talking about college majors, industries, and career pathways early is that these subjects tend to be more "concrete" concepts that young teens can easily visualize and relate to their personal goals - especially for first generation students where, for many, the word "college" is often an abstract concept.

On the day of the event, students will participate in interactive workshops, activities, and tours. The day will conclude with a presentation on the variety of student services available at the college.

Several pre and post activities will also take place at the high schools themselves.

FULLERTON COLLEGE IMPLEMENTING 8 KEYS TO SUCCESS STUDENT-VETERANS INITIATIVE
Ninety-three of California community colleges are implementing President Obama's 8 Keys to Success plan to help student-veterans on campus, and more colleges are signing on each day. Included in those 93 colleges is Fullerton College.

The 8 Keys to Success highlight specific ways that colleges and universities can support veterans as they pursue their education and employment goals. It aims to aid veterans in their effort to afford and complete their college degrees and certificates in preparation for jobs in high-growth sectors of the economy.

President Obama introduced the 8 Keys to Success at the Disabled American Veterans National Convention in Orlando, and California community colleges began joining the initiative immediately. The keys to success encourage institutions of higher education to support veterans with access to the courses and resources they need to ensure that they graduate and get good jobs.
NEW MANAGED PRINT SERVICES SYSTEM WILL REDUCE COSTS AND IMPROVE EFFICIENCY
Fullerton College has entered into a Managed Print Services agreement with The Circle Delivers. This new partnership will improve efficiency and reduce costs. This program is scheduled to begin tomorrow, October 1.

With the new system, ordering replacement toner will be much easier and cost-effective than it is now. The program covers all HP, Brother, Lexmark and similar laser printer devices. For more information, please contact Co Ho.
CLASSIFIED SENATE SEEKING EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Classified Senate is accepting nominations for the Fall 2013 Classified Employee Recognition Award during the entire month of October. Nominations may be submitted by administrators, faculty, staff or students, and are designed to recognize a classified professional that is knowledgeable, committed to the college mission, and has provided service that is above and beyond "the call of duty."  Nomination forms are available on the Classified Senate website

The winner will be announced at the Classified Senate Meet & Greet, scheduled for Wednesday, November 13.

CENTENNIAL PRODUCTION OF RAGTIME OPENS IN OCTOBER
The Fullerton College Centennial production of Ragtime is not only a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, but a relevant tale for today. Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families, as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America.

The show opens on Thursday, October 17 and runs though the following weekend. Tickets are $15 at the door and $12.50 pre-sale. Complete listings and times are below:
