NOCCCD BUDGET CENTRAL
Budget Central
As the state's June 15 budget deadline draws near, details and reaction to the governor's May Revision proposal are emerging. Based on information distributed by the Community College League of California, there is a more complete view of a budget that, while positive for community colleges, remains in flux.

Late last week, the Legislative Analyst's Office (LAO) released a report that projected state revenues exceeding those forecast in the May Revision projections by $2.8 billion. At the same time, the LAO provided an option to the Legislature by which funding for K-12 and community colleges ("Proposition 98") could actually be cut from the governor's proposal. Scott Lay of the League calls the governor's May Revision "the best in years for community colleges," but notes there are also non-education priorities to be considered. The LAO's increased revenue picture is a positive in this regard, he said

Meanwhile, the Senate full budget committee is expected to act on its version of the budget this week, while the Assembly is expected to do it following the Memorial Day holiday. Each house is taking "significantly different approaches," which will need to be reconciled, Lay said. Both are discussing small cost-of-living adjustments.

Fascinating Fact ...
Approximately 1/3 of cat owners think their pets are able to read their minds.

The editor of the President's Weekly knows her cat does ... and with that, see you in the fall!
