FACULTY ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN COMMENCEMENT

This year's Commencement ceremony will take place on Friday, May 31 at 6 pm in the Fullerton Union High School Stadium. All faculty are invited and encouraged to participate in the ceremony! This year's featured Commencement speaker is Cruz Reynoso, Retired California Supreme Court Associate Justice. Leon Leyson will be awarded the 2013 Commencement Award (his wife Lis will accept the award on his behalf).

HORNET BASEBALL TEAM FINISHES SECOND IN THE STATE
The Fullerton College Baseball team finished second in the state after losing to district-rival Cypress College on Sunday, 10-2. The Hornets were the Orange Empire Conference Champions, while Cypress finished in fourth place.

After the Hornets took an early 1-0 lead, Cypress put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back. In fact, their offense provided Kauhaahaa runs in five different innings, with Jacob MacWilliam getting things started with a two-run single in the second inning, while Sam Tolleson made it a 5-2 game with his two-run triple in the fourth inning.

Fullerton looked to seldom-used Austin Sweet (0-1) to try give them enough quality innings, as the Hornets needed to defeat Cypress twice on Sunday to win their first-ever state baseball title. But Sweet was chased in the second inning, and the Chargers peppered five Fullerton pitchers for 18 hits in the championships.

This year marks the first time two schools from the same district played for a state baseball title.

FULLERTON COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH CITY LIBRARY FOR ONE BOOK PROGRAM

Fullerton College recently joined forces with the Fullerton Public Library in a combined effort to enhance community connections and foster reading and discussion of books and ideas.  Thus, what was formerly called One Book, One College here at Fullerton College is now Fullerton Reads: One Book, One College, One City, a shared program of Fullerton College and the Fullerton Public Library.

The first book selection is Hector Tobar's 2011 novelThe Barbarian Nurseries.  Set for the most part in Orange County, the novel tells a timely tale that touches on issues connected to immigration, family, socio-economic status, suburbanization, the media, domestic workers, cross-cultural identity, the history of Latinos in Southern California, and more.

Tobar is expected to speak at the Fullerton Public Library in October and at Fullerton College in April.  Several other events connected to the book will also take place at the Library in October and at Fullerton College in the spring.  Please look for announcements of these events and encourage your colleagues and students to attend.

For ideas on how to incorporate the book into course curriculum, contact Kim Orlijan

NOCCCD BUDGET CENTRAL
Budget Central
Governor Jerry Brown this week released his "May Revise" budget proposal and the news was very positive for community colleges.  Among the best news for the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD) is that the proposal delays action plans to move adult education from the K-12 system to community colleges.

The Governor's revised proposal recognizes that more time is needed to provide a seamless transition to a new model of delivering adult and noncredit education. Under the plan, the status-quo model will be retained for two years.

This is good news for the NOCCCD and the School of Continuing Education as significant funding issues were introduced in the initial proposal. Members of the District community worked diligently to highlight these concerns and offer alternative solutions in Sacramento. The revised proposal is reflective of those efforts.

The "May Revise" includes a regional consortia of K-12 and CCC adult-education schools to plan curriculum and allocation of resources in a coordinated manner. $30 million in planning and implementation grants will be awarded in 2013-14, while $500 million will fund adult education providers jointly operated by the regional consortia in 2015-16 and beyond.

As the proposal is studied, more details will be shared with the campus community.

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC AWARDS: Fullerton College Athletics welcomed parents, faculty, administration, and FC students to the 16th annual Athletic Academic Awards honoring excellence in academics and athletic achievement last Thursday. Many outstanding Fullerton College student-athletes were honored at the FC Student Center for their hard work in the classroom and on the field/court/pool. A record breaking 190 FC athletes were honored as Hornet Scholars maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher.  All of this would not have been possible if not for the tireless efforts of the FC faculty, staff, and the INCITE Program. The Academic Athletic Awards was the brain-child of beloved former Head Football Coach Gene Murphy who poured his heart and soul into furthering the education of Fullerton College student-athletes. Current Head Football Coach Tim Byrnes continues to carry the torch for his mentor as he did a fantastic job organizing and hosting this year's event.
