HORNET BASEBALL TEAM HEADS TO STATE FINALS FOR FIRST TIME IN HISTORY
The Hornet baseball team almost let the whole season slip away on Sunday losing to Palomar College in the first game of the day 8-0, and then they came out flat in the second game against the Comets digging themselves into a 6-0 hole.

Fullerton had only one hit through the first five innings against a pitcher with only 12 innings on the mound under his belt. Then something funny happened. The Hornets began to play their brand of baseball shaking off the baseball demons that handed them six errors.

Fullerton's bats finally woke up for Mother's Day, and they went on a tear beginning in the sixth inning when Garrett Donohoe singled to center scoring Troy Mulcahey.

In the seventh, Fullerton made it a game again on a Erik Lewis single scoring Derreck Garcia. Mulcahey then doubled to right field scoring  Dakota Wix. Jose Rojas made it 6-4 game when he singled to right field scoring Lewis.

In the eighth inning, Fullerton broke the game open scoring three runs, which was lead off by Ryan Joyce. Joyce smoked a triple to right field and then ended up scoring on a Comet throwing error. Lewis then singled scoring Derreck Garcia and then Mulcahey hit a shot through the left side allowing Wix to score giving the Hornets a 7-6 lead - and advancing the Fullerton College Baseball squad to the CCCAA State Finals for the first time in school history!

This weekend, Fullerton College will head to Fresno City College for the State Finals! The Hornets will take on Feather River College on Friday at 11 am.

PRESIDENT'S ADVISORY COUNCIL SUMMARY

A summary of the May 8, 2013 PAC meeting follows:

Student Learning: Addressing the Needs of Underprepared Students - On April 30, administrators met with students to continue the conversation on closing the achievement gap. Chancellor Doffoney and Dr. Vurdien will also meet with students on May 13 at 2:30pm in Room 227.

Student Learning: Curriculum - The Curriculum Committee has removed repeatability from 316 courses and will be submitting 5 new associate degrees for transfer to the board on May 14.

Student Learning: SLOs - At their final meeting, the SLO committee will either make a recommendation to purchase SLO software or continue evaluating other options.

Student Learning: Other - An email will be sent to all faculty regarding the pilot program for teaching high school classes at Buena Park High School.

Accreditation - A handout was distributed that highlights the key changes to Accreditation Standards between 2002 and the anticipated 2014 versions of the ACCJC Accreditation Standards.

Enrollment Management - A draft of the Enrollment Management Committee composition was presented for first reading.

Strategic Plan/Fullerton College Planning Process - At the second board meeting in September, each campus will present the progress they have made toward the District Strategic Plan.

Bond Measure for NOCCCD in 2014 - The council was unable to reach consensus on support for a potential bond measure for NOCCCD in 2014. The majority were in support of a bond measure. Although the minority saw the value of a bond measure, they would like the district to focus on teaching and learning by attracting high quality faculty and to address how this bond measure would be managed differently than the last one.

PAC Evaluation - A revised draft will be sent to the members and action will be taken at the next meeting.

Staff Development - Faculty Senate created a task force to discuss staff development. The group met yesterday and will make a recommendation to Faculty Senate.

Program Review Committee Report - Faculty Senate approved the Program Review Committee Report, which was presented to PAC for first reading.

FULLERTON COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH CITY LIBRARY FOR ONE BOOK PROGRAM

Fullerton College recently joined forces with the Fullerton Public Library in a combined effort to enhance community connections and foster reading and discussion of books and ideas.  Thus, what was formerly called One Book, One College here at Fullerton College is now Fullerton Reads: One Book, One College, One City, a shared program of Fullerton College and the Fullerton Public Library.

The first book selection is Hector Tobar's 2011 novelThe Barbarian Nurseries.  Set for the most part in Orange County, the novel tells a timely tale that touches on issues connected to immigration, family, socio-economic status, suburbanization, the media, domestic workers, cross-cultural identity, the history of Latinos in Southern California, and more.

Tobar is expected to speak at the Fullerton Public Library in October and at Fullerton College in April.  Several other events connected to the book will also take place at the Library in October and at Fullerton College in the spring.  Please look for announcements of these events and encourage your colleagues and students to attend.

For ideas on how to incorporate the book into course curriculum, contact Kim Orlijan

KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS SWARM FULLERTON COLLEGE LIBRARY

Bearing tags emblazoned with forenames and dream jobs, such as fire fighter, librarian, and Lone Ranger, approximately 1,500 kindergartners and their parents and teachers descended upon the campus of Fullerton College on what would normally be a serene Friday. These young students were on-site for KinderCaminata, an annual event that began in 1994. Circulation Librarian Jane Ishibashi draws upon her thirteen years abroad in Spain as she explains, "'Caminata', in Spanish, means 'long walk or trek.'" And trek they did. Herded in from the quad by Cataloging Librarian Dave Brown, approximately six hundred of these visitors packed into the library on Friday, April 26 for story times and puppet shows featuring frogs, dogs, pigs, cows, sheep, horses, and a fiddle.

Instruction Librarian Jill Okamura and Library Assistant Susan Mullen met kindergartners in the entrance hall to share an expanding collection of Target-sponsored children's books. In the foyer, children participated in interactive story time activities, including a call-and-response farm animal tale. Some children waved fuzzy puppets while others brayed, mooed, or meowed.

Library Assistant Betsy Murray and Acquisitions Librarian Monique Delatte Starkey also worked the puppets and presented other stories, such as Rockin' in My School Shoes. Says Murray, "We were pleased to see that many of the children recognized the star of the book, Pete the Cat."

"A Target grant enabled the library to offer visitors souvenir bookmarks featuring the feline star of the Pete the Cat series of books," states Delatte Starkey. "All five hundred bookmarks were snapped up in no time!"

The library puppetry ended around the lunch hour as, Pied Piper-like, the brassy beats of a student marching band stomped by, drawing out the curious children.

LIBRARY TO STAY OPEN LATE TO ASSIST STUDENTS DURING FINALS
In an effort to better assist students, the Fullerton College Library is staying open until 10 pm Monday, May 20 through Wednesday, May 22.

Fascinating Fact ...
In Kentucky, US, every citizen is required by law to take a bath at least once a year.
