ACTIVE SHOOTER LOCKDOWN DRILL THIS THURSDAY

 This Thursday, May 2 at 10:15 am, Fullerton College will participate in an active shooter lockdown drill. During the event, faculty and staff are encouraged to view the Shots Fired on Campus Video which will be streamed by ACT at http://fcvideo.fullcoll.edu/shooter1. The video will also be shown in the North Gym and in the upstairs College Center conference rooms.

PRESIDENT'S ADVISORY COUNCIL SUMMARY

A summary of the April 24, 2013 PAC meeting follows:

 

Action on PAC Recommendations - Reaffirm College Mission Statement - Dr. Vurdien accepted the council's recommendation to reaffirm the college mission statement.

 

Action on PAC Recommendations - Proposed College Hours for 2013-2014 - Dr. Vurdien accepted the council's recommendation for the proposed 2013-2014 College Hours.

 

Action on PAC Recommendations - PBSC Recommendation: Instructional Program Review Funding - Dr. Vurdien accepted the council's recommendation to allocate $156,200 for 2012-2013 Program Review Resource Requests.

 

Action on PAC Recommendations - PBSC Recommendation: Strategic  

Action Plan Funding - Dr. Vurdien accepted the council's recommendation to carryover $34,321 to fund 2013-2015 Strategic Action Plans.

 

Student Learning - Addressing the Needs of Underprepared Students

- On Tuesday, April 30 at 2pm in Room 226, administrators will address the questions and concerns of students who attended the Closing the Achievement Gap meeting on April 12.  

 

Student Learning - Curriculum - The Curriculum Committee is finishing up the work on repeatability for the implementation of DegreeWorks.

 

Student Learning - SLOs - The SLO committee continues to explore software that will track SLO data.

 

Enrollment Management - An email has been sent to the workgroup to set up future meetings.

 

Budget - The Council on Budget & Facilities made recommendations to the District Consultation Council for a one-time increase in credit FTES for 2013-14 and implementation of an FTES "cushion" at each campus.

 

Strategic Plan/Fullerton College Planning Process - The Strategic Action Plans for 2013-2015 will be compiled and presented at the next PAC meeting.

 

Bond Measure for NOCCCD in 2014 - Members will share feedback from their constituency groups at the next PAC meeting.

 

PAC Evaluation - A draft instrument for evaluating PAC was presented for first reading.

 

Staff Development - Faculty Senate will be discussing Staff Development at their next meeting and will share the concerns of faculty on May 8.

NOCCCD BUDGET CENTRAL

Budget Central The NOCCCD Budget Allocation Model will be presented to the campus at a campus forum on Tuesday, April 30 at 3 pm in room 410. The forum will be moderated by Fred Williams, Vice Chancellor of Finance & Facilities, and Rodrigo Garcia, Interim District Director of Fiscal Affairs.

 

The forum is open to all who wish to better understand how funds are allocated throughout the district.

CALIFORNIA COUSINS INTERNATIONAL MENTORING PROGRAM CELEBRATES 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The California Cousins program, a mentoring program for F-1 international students, is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this semester! The program was started by counselor Nahrin Hinaro to aid in the transition and retention of F-1 international students.

 

California Cousins are mentors/ambassadors who serve a vital role in the successful adjustment of new F-1 international students. The program assists new students adapt to the campus and orients them to college life and the United States.

FULLERTON COLLEGE FOUNDATION HOSTING BBQ AT ANNUAL RAILROAD DAYS EVENT

The Fullerton College Foundation is hosting its inaugural Train Station BBQ evening fundraiser this Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. The event, which is part of the annual Railroad Days, will include a private, after-hours tour of railcars, exhibit viewing, and dinner provided by Brian's Big B Barbecue of Fullerton. Tickets are $50 per person and dinner seatings are available at 5 pm, 6 pm, and 7 pm. 


Proceeds from the event will support the foundation's annual scholarship program. In its 53 years, the program has awarded more than 10,000 students in excess of $3 million in scholarships, loans and emergency grants.

 

Tickets for the Train Station BBQ are available at the Foundation, 9 am - 4:30 pm, Monday thru Thursday, and 9 am - 1 pm on Friday.

HISPANIC GENERATION 1.5 ENGAGEMENT SEMINAR THIS WEDNESDAY
Staff Development is hosting an Engagement and Retention of
Hispanic Generation 1.5 Students seminar this Wednesday, May 1 at 3 pm in room 224. The seminar will be facilitated by Dr. Jacqueline Peņa, chairperson of the developmental reading and writing department at Miami Dade College. 

The seminar will focus on the growing Hispanic Generation 1.5 student population and explore engagement and retention challenges inside and outside of the classroom.  The presentation will focus on current trends and research from a qualitative case study conducted at a community college.  After the session, participants from all aspects of the college will be able to identify engagement and retention success strategies for potential implementation with Generation 1.5 students from different backgrounds.

SECOND ANNUAL ASIAN  & PACIFIC ISLANDER FORUM TODAY
The Cadena Cultural Center, Asian Pacific Islander Faculty & Staff Association, Ethnic Studies Department, and the District Staff Development Committee are hosting the annual Asian & Pacific Islander Forum on Monday, April 29 at 11:45 am in room 224.  

 

The forum will include keynote speaker, Curtis Chin, who produced the documentary Vincent Who? which tells the story of Vincent Chin, 27, who was murdered in Detroit in 1982. The men who killed him were only sentenced to three years of probation and fined $3,000. Remember Vincent Chin became a rallying cry for Asian-Americans who protested in cities across the country. Students will have the opportunity to break into group discussions after the keynote address.

Five recruit officers from the Fullerton College Police Academy recently shared their experiences with students at Lincoln Elementary School in Anaheim. Justin Cassidy, Alfredo Estrada, Joshua Hernandez, Guadalupe Mercado, and Jose Salazar each shared personal, college, career experiences, and facts about Fullerton College and steps leading to attending the Fullerton College Police Academy. 832 students attended covering grades 4 through 6. FCPA recruits were recognized by Academy staff for their enthusiasm, loyalty to the Academy, and for their dedication and pride in being members of FCPA Class #42.

Debate team members Domingo Rodriguez and Domingo Cabrera teamed up to win the CSUN Robert Cabrera Debate Tournament  on Friday, April 26. Finishing second was the other Fullerton team of Ryan Cannon and Steven Hernandez.  CSU Fullerton was third, and CSUN took the next two top spots.  Top individual speaker awards went to Cannon (1st),  Rodriguez (2nd), and Cabrera (4th).  The debaters argued over the "Schumer-McCain" immigration reform bill currently being debated in Congress.

FULLERTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS ROUND-UP
WOMEN'S TENNIS: STATE CHAMPS! The Fullerton College women's tennis team edged Sierra College 5-4 winning the 20123 CCCAA State Title for the first time in school history on Wednesday.  Facing a 4-2 deficit, the Hornets posted wins at Nos. 6, 1 and 2 singles to pull out a dramatic 5-4 victory over Sierra.  FC took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins by #1 Sarah Anderson-Victoria Vo and #3 Jenna Futch-Andrea Zavala. In individual-play, Anderson made it all the way to the state finals where she fell to Bruna Magalhaes of Santa Barbara City College 6-2, 7-6 (1).  In doubles-play, Anderson and Vo claimed the state title beating Juliana Nelkin and Kaori Tsuda of Santa Monica College 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

BASEBALL: OEC CHAMPS OUTRIGHT: FC traveled south to Golden West College on Thursday beating the Rustlers 12-4 to wrap up the regular season.  The Hornets end the regular season with their first Orange Empire Conference Championship (1983 - South Coast Conference), an overall record of 25-11, and a conference record of 15-6.  Up Next:  Fullerton College will play the winner of the game between #16 El Camino Compton College and #18 Santa Barbara City College.

TRACK & FIELD: Hornets showed their pride and strength in the OEC Championships this past Friday at Santa Ana College.  Both the FC men's and women's teams finished in 4th place with over twenty personal records. Up Next: The Hornets will be sending a number of athletes to the Southern California Track and Field Regional Championships , Saturday, May 4 at Antelope Valley College.  The start time will be 10 am.

SWIM & DIVE:  Justin Choi placed 10th in the 3M diving event at the State Swim & Dive Championships this past weekend at East L.A. College.  Brianna Burrows and Okran Omori both placed 17th in their breaststroke and backstroke events, one place short of scoring.  Golden West College went on to win both the Men's and Women's team championships.

WOMEN'S BADMINTON:  Fullerton hosted Grossmont College last Wednesday beating the Griffins 18-3.  Up Next: FC (2-6) will compete in the Conference Individual Playoffs at Grossmont College on Friday, May 3.

SOFTBALL: Following the completion of the 2013 season, the Orange Empire Conference softball head coaches selected the All-Orange Empire Conference Team. FC softball's lone sophomore Nicole Chapman made the team.
