STATE CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE RELEASES STUDENT SUCCESS SCORECARD

Last week, the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office unveiled its new Student Success Scorecard, an accountability tool making the state's entire 112-campus system perhaps the most-transparent and accountable system of public higher education in the country. The performance metrics in the scorecard are designed to help more students achieve their educational goals on time.

Release of the scorecard is one of several actions taken by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors to increase the number of students who earn certificates and degrees or transfer to a four-year institution.

The Student Success Scorecard measures student performance at each community college in a clear and concise way. It will help concentrate the focus of educational leaders on improving student success.

APIA SCREENING AMONG B-BOYS DOCUMENTARY
The Asian Pacific Islander Association and the Cadena Transfer Center are  presenting a screening of the film Among B-Boys on Thursday, April 25 at 2 pm in the Cadena Transfer Center. A question and answer with director Chris Woon will follow the film. The event is free for students, faculty, staff, and community members

Among B-Boys is a documentary exploring the intersection between urban b-boying breakdancing and the traditional roots of Hmong culture. But instead of the usual generational conflict, the film unveils a story of the modern and the traditional actually affirming each other, visually weaving between the older generationr's memory of ethnicity and war and the younger generation's toprocks, footwork, freezes and power-moves.

The movement began in the 1990s with the first wave of Hmong youth in the California Central Valley coming of age as Hmong Americans. Director Christopher Woon's short film documented a new movement of Hmong youth getting immersed in not only breaking/B-Boying, but also Hip Hop culture. Among B-Boys has since become an hour long feature documentary focusing on two main story lines, that of B-Boy Sukie and the Velocity/Soul Rivals and twin brothers, Bboys Mpact and Villn of Underground Flow. The documentary takes viewers  from Merced, Fresno and Sacramento in the California Central Valley, to Long Beach, California to as far as Tulsa, Oklahoma.

APIA would like to thank the Fullerton Foundation for its generous funding of this event.unding of this event.

NOCCCD BUDGET CENTRAL

Budget Central April is a quiet period in the development of California's 2013-2014 budget. Talk about budget proposals may be subdued because Democrats now hold a supermajority in both houses of the state's government - which means no Republican votes are needed to approve the next budget, and so there is no need for the two parties to negotiate details.

The next milestone in the finalization of the state budget is the Governor's Revised Budget proposal - commonly referred to as the "May Revise" because of its mid-May availability. The May Revise is in essence a second draft of the governor's proposed budget (typically available each January). It incorporates changes based on feedback from the initial budget proposal.

The California Constitution requires that the Legislature approve the final budget bill by June 15. In the past, this date was frequently circumvented; however, recent legal changes have made passage of the budget in June a strong likelihood.
