| Biology professor Dr. Jo Wen Wu was recently named the 2013 Fullerton College Teacher of the Year! It is her willingness to go the extra mile to help students succeed and a genuine desire to better prepare students for their future career goals that helped Dr. Wu secure the honor.
Dr. Wu came to Fullerton College in 1990 and has volunteered her time both in and out of the classroom. She serves as the faculty advisor for the Science Club, coordinator of the Amgen-Bruce Wallace Biotechnology Lab Program, and chair of the Biology Scholarship Committee. She has applied for and received three Biotechnology Workforce Innovation Grants, totaling over $700,000 and organizes science and health symposiums.
Perhaps what impresses Dr. Wu's students the most though are the weekly student sessions she organizes for students needing that extra boost, the professional speakers she invites to class, and the time she spends reviewing college applications for those hoping to transfer to a four-year university. One of her current students commented that, "Dr. Wu takes complex ideas and makes them fun! She has helped me realize my ambitions and without her I would have no idea how to achieve my goals. She has inspired me to become a professor so I can teach and mentor students and one day be hopefully even half the professor she is."
Dr. Wu received her B.A. in Biological Sciences from the University of Missouri at Columbia and her Ph.D. in Developmental and Cell Biology from UC Irvine.
She was selected 2013 Teacher of the Year from a group of finalists by a committee composed of members of the Associated Students Curriculum & Education Committee and the Faculty Senate. The five other finalists were Social Sciences' Jodi Balma and Bruce Hanson, Natural Sciences' Guy Dadson, Fine Arts' Bill Hayner, and Technology and Engineering's Connie Lopez.

In late March, the library provided tours and story times for the future FC alumni who are presently elementary school students at Maple School. These inquisitive Fullerton primary schoolers were welcomed with a library tour by Circulation Librarian Jane Ishibashi, and treated to an interactive story time with Acquisitions Librarian Monique Delatte Starkey and Library Assistant Betsy Murray. Materials selected through Target grants, such as pop-up books, puppets, flannel boards, and colorful placards, were employed in this hands-on activity.
Fullerton College radio station 90.1 FM KBPK held a simulcast (video & radio) of the Read Around The Clock event from Buena Park High School (BPHS) on March 20. The event, created by BPHS English teacher Ron Carcich, consisted of students and volunteers reading for 24 hours straight. Buena Park Mayor Dr. Beth Swift and BPHS Principal Jim Coombs were two of several interviews conducted during the simulcast. The broadcast is available for viewing here.

NOCCCD BUDGET CENTRAL
|
A recent syndicated opinion piece by "California Watch" - which included publication late last month in The Orange County Register among other newspapers in the state - hypothesized about significant potential savings for the California Community College System. "Bigger does not always mean better," said Scott Lay, President of the Community College League of California in rebuttal to the article. "And, bigger most certainly doesn't always mean cheaper."
Lay also pointed to a 2001 study indicating that the process of consolidation itself is costly, and that changes to legislation would be required for such consolidation to be imposed on districts.
Lay noted a number of cost-saving initiatives intended to leverage the power of the 112-campus system gained without consolidation of districts. These include legal opinions as part of CCLC's policy and procedure service, and purchasing agreements initiated through the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Local control also provides stronger accountability to voters.
