Stargazing for Dummies

How many among us can look up at the night sky and point out prominent stars, planets, and other heavenly wonders, purely from memory?  Certainly there are some of us who are blessed with the ability to discern patterns and locations in what appears to the rest of us as a completely random and endless sky full of white dots.

Even if you are not one of 'them', there are still simple ways to enrich your star gazing experience with the use of a few simple, and free, tools available online and elsewhere.

Cooky Jason's March Recipe:

Jason's Well-Known Pouched Salmon

Alrighty, campers. I know a lot of the country is still gridlocked in a winter wonderland and most of you won't be camping anytime soon. So with that in mind I try to write recipes that are just as easily done at home as at the campsite. Pouching is a very efficient way of cooking over a campfire or on a grill. And with fish it's great because sticking isn't a problem. You can very well do these in the oven. In my opinion, salmon needs very little help in the flavor department. However, in pouching you're essentially steaming the food and not getting that charbroiled flavor from open fire. But that's ok because steaming is much healthier than charring food anyway. And the key to countering that, especially with fish, is a combination of herbs. Follow along...

The Gear Doctor

Learn Before You Leave

Avoid Campsite Frustration

Have you ever purchased a new piece of camping gear and tried to use it for the first time in camp?  When you could have tested it, or at least read the instructions before you left home?

Lanterns that won't light, stoves that won't burn.  It's happened to almost everyone at one time or another.  One complaint we hear a lot is the frustration of trying to set up a tent in the dark, after arriving late to camp, with cold and hungry guests.  Or worse yet, all of the above and in the rain.  We recommend to all our customers that they take the time for a trial run in the front yard before departing for the backcountry or the campground.  This allows time to identify any problems or missing parts, and to become familiar with the set-up process in advance.  Which can make setting up camp much smoother and faster.

However we realize that not everyone has the time or space to do that, so we have compiled a number of set-up videos for our products, and you can view them all here.  By viewing the set up video for your latest product purchase (most manufacturers produce product videos nowadays), you can become familiar with the item functions and what to be prepared for when you arrive in camp late.  In the dark.  With hungry kids.  In the rain.

There's no excuse for not being prepared!
