Tents, Gadgets, Gear, and 'Roughing-It'

When we first developed our Tepee Outhouse Tent, the standard reaction from most folks was a smirk and a comment about not needing to shower while camping.  I guess many folks felt that showering while camping, or having a tent solely for restroom or shower use was, well, wimpy.  That it would somehow detract from the feeling of 'roughing' it when out camping.  "I don't need a shower when I'm camping" was the standard reply.

So that got me to thinking about how we define 'roughing-it' nowadays.  Assuming that if you like to 'rough-it', you've already dispensed of the Game Boys, portable TV's, and other modern amenities, and you have an affinity for the rigors and hygiene of camping.  You love the smell of a campfire, cooking over open flames, finding a convenient tree when nature calls, and just being outdoors.  Even your own Eau de' B.O. serves as a personal reminder that 'hey, I'm roughing it, I can go days without a shower when I'm camping'.

What we call 'roughing-it' today was simply a matter of survival a hundred years ago.  Without the camp conveniences of today, campers of a century ago were not making a conscience choice to 'rough-it', they were simply using the tools available at the time to make camping as enjoyable, or tolerable, as possible.  So if we are basing our definition of roughing it on the rigors of camping in the past, the question that begs asking is;  would not those campers of a hundred years ago have greatly appreciated, and utilized, all the great equipment that we have at our disposal nowadays?

And if we take advantage of these conveniences, are we somehow cheapening the 'roughing-it' experience of camping?  Although our modern lanterns and stoves are easier (and safer) to use, our tent materials are lighter and more waterproof, and our sleeping bags are filled with man-made fibers rather than duck down or wool, the bottom line is that you are still sleeping in your tent or camping trailer, out of doors, battling the elements.  No matter how badly you may smell at night, when you are snug in your sleeping bag or bed roll, the experience is exactly the same as it was in 1913.

The firelight flickering on your tent at night, the wind blowing the tent around, and the sound of rain falling on your tent has not changed much in a hundred years, nor is it likely to.

I hope to see you 'round the campfire soon!

Star Gazing
If you ask most stargazers to name their favorite meteor shower, the odds are good that "Perseid" will be the first word out of their mouths. This annual shower seemingly has it all: It offers a consistently high rate of meteors year after year; it produces a higher percentage of bright ones than most other showers; it occurs in August when many people take summer vacation; and it happens at a time when nice weather and reasonable nighttime temperatures are common north of the equator. No other major shower can boast all four of these attributes.

And this year's Perseid meteor shower promises one other significant advantage: It peaks under a Moon-free sky. From mid-northern latitudes, the waxing crescent Moon sets shortly after 10 p.m. local daylight time on the 11th. As always, you'll see more meteors at a viewing site far from artificial lights.

  • August 6 - New Moon. The Moon will be directly between the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible from Earth. This phase occurs at 21:51 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

  • August 11, 12 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24. It peaks this year on the night of August 11 and the morning of August 12. The first quarter moon will set shortly after midnight leaving dark skies for what should be an excellent show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

    *What is a meteor shower?

A meteor shower is a spike in the number of meteors or "shooting stars" that streak through the night sky. Most meteor showers are spawned by comets. As a comet orbits the Sun it sheds an icy, dusty debris stream along its orbit. If Earth travels through this stream, we will see a meteor shower. Although the meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, if you trace their paths, the meteors in each shower appear to "rain" into the sky from the same region. Meteor showers are named for the constellation that coincides with this region in the sky, a spot known as the radiant. For instance, the radiant for the Leonid meteor shower is in the constellation Leo. The Perseid meteor shower is so named because meteors appear to fall from a point in the constellation Perseus

  • August 21 - Full Moon. The Moon will be directly opposite the Earth from the Sun and will be fully illuminated as seen from Earth. This phase occurs at 01:45 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Sturgeon Moon because the large sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes and other major lakes were more easily caught at this time of year. This moon has also been known as the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon.

  • August 27 - Neptune at Opposition. The blue giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph Neptune. Due to its extreme distance from Earth, it will only appear as a tiny blue dot in all but the most powerful telescopes.

PROPER TENT CARE

Howdy, campers!  If you want to increase the life of your tent, it is absolutely essential that you wash it periodically.  First, let's discuss the TYPES of tents we may own.  There are the smallish one/two man versions, such as backpacking tents (Style 1), then there are the slightly larger two/four man styles, mostly dome shaped (Style 2), and then there are the family style tents for four/six, with larger poles and generally cabin shaped rather than domes (Style 3).

Style 1 and most Style 2 tents can be washed in a front loading washer (or top loading washer with NO AGITATOR).  Use Cheer Free or another soap that has no perfumes or dyes.  Wash in COLD water on GENTLE cycle.  DO NOT DRY IN THE DRYER.  Line dry at home outside if possible, until COMPLETELY DRY.  Be sure to check corners for residual moisture.  A tent put away wet is a tent that will never be able to be used again due to growth of mold and fungus.  It will smell really yukky and will also delaminate the nice coating that keeps you dry.  Style 3 tents can be hand washed in the tub, or set up in the back yard and washed with a cloth or brush.  Have a bucket of soapy water handy, and keep dipping and washing.  Rinse well with the hose, and allow to dry completely.  If you wash in the tub, wring out as well as possible, and then line dry outside.  Be sure to fold your tents properly for storage, DO NOT STUFF INTO SACKS.  Folding ensures the proper storage of your zippers and doesn't allow them to kink, while stuffing will often kink the zippers, rendering them unusable later.

Following these simple steps will keep your tent not only clean but free from debris that can harm your tent over time.

   CHUCKWAGON FIXIN'S FROM COOKY JASON

Hey there, campers! Here is a quick and easy meal that is one of my favorite camp recipes. When camping, the rule of thumb for great recipes is to maximize taste and nutrition while minimizing preparation time and cleanup. The best camp cooking recipes allow you to do this with the limited resources available in the outdoors.

Tuna/Salmon Salad Sandwich

This takes only a few minutes to throw together and is a perfect for a quick snack at the campsite. I like mine on lightly toasted sourdough. There are, of course, dozens of variations. This is one of my favorite.

Major Players

  • 1 6oz can tuna, in oil
  • 1 6oz can salmon, in oil
  • ¼ cup mayo
  • ¼ cup dill pickle relish (Or ½ cup diced cucumber and ¼ cup rice wine vinegar)
  • ¼ cup chopped onion
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Start the clock: 5 minutes

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and spread on your favorite bread.

Game Changer

Grill fresh tuna and salmon and combine with the same ingredient as above.

Add 1 large chopped tomato and ¼ cup fresh chopped dill, or 1 Tbsp dried dill. Optional: add 1 Tbsp chili powder.

Grilling the tuna and salmon takes this to the next level. And the tomato and chili powder really set it off. It's a great twist on a classic. And this can be prepped at home. You can even toast the bread on the grill, since you have it ready to go from grilling the fish. Any bread is fine; you can even use leftover hamburger buns. Throw on a slice of Gouda or provolone. Win!

As always, feel free to drop me a line at jason_rogers80@yahoo.com with comments, questions, or requests!
