Finding a Home in the Marketplace

Finding the best dealers to sell our products is not always an easy proposition.  And we've tried just about every avenue that exists to sell our tents.  At one point or another, we've been in just about every major outdoor retail chain, including Cabela's REI, Sportsmans Warehouse, to name just a few.  Over the years we have decided that these types of big-box retailers just don't fit our model of an ideal dealer of PahaQue products.

Because our tents are higher-quality, and a bit more technical than most of our competition, it takes a special kind of dealer to sell our products.  We're not interested in the turn n' burn stores that do not offer customer service before or after the sale.  So today, while our best dealers may not offer the lowest prices on the products they sell, they do offer value to our customers that is hard to put a price on. From experienced staff who know their stuff, to solid customer service after the sale, PahaQue and our dealers are interested in making sure you get the right tent for your needs, and customer support for as long as you need it.  From advice on how to set up the tent, to warranty and repair service years later, PahaQue and our dealers want to deliver value that goes way beyond just the lowest price.

PAHAQUE FEATURED DEALER

Occasionally we will focus on a key dealer in our newsletter to let you know who is doing the best job of meeting our customers needs, before and after the sale.

campmor

Campmor was established in 1978 in New Jersey, and they state on their website "Our goal is to put you in the tent (or tents) that suit your year round camping needs and your budget, from ultralight backpacking to luxury family camping."  With a retail store in New Jersey, and a state of the art website, Campmor offers a huge selection of camping and outdoor gear and apparel, at competitive prices and sold by an experienced staff, both in the store and online.  We first started selling our products to Campmor in 1999, and since that time they have delivered solid customer service, and have become the preferred dealer for PahaQue repeat customers.  Why not take a look at what they have to offer!

Star Gazing

June is going to be another great month for Stargazing in camp, including some great views of Mercury, and the June Solstice on the 21st!  Be sure to pack your telescope or binoculars to camp this month.

  • June 8 - New Moon. The Moon will be directly between the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible from Earth. This phase occurs at 15:56 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.
  • June 12 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury will be at its furthest angle from the Sun, known as greatest elongation. It will be at its highest point in the night sky after sunset. This is the best time to try to view Mercury since it usually stays so close to the Sun and doesn't usually climb very high above the horizon.

  • June 21 - June Solstice. The June solstice occurs at 05:04 UTC. The North Pole of the earth will be tilted toward the Sun, which will have reached its northernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 23.44 degrees north latitude. This is the first day of summer (summer solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • June 8 - New Moon. The Moon will be directly between the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible from Earth. This phase occurs at 15:56 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

  • June 23 - Full Moon. The Moon will be directly opposite the Earth from the Sun and will be fully illuminated as seen from Earth. This phase occurs at 11:32 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Strawberry Moon because it signaled the time of year to gather ripening fruit. It also coincides with the peak of the strawberry harvesting season. This moon has also been known as the Full Rose Moon and the Full Honey Moon.

 NIGHT SKY OBSERVING TIPS
  • Adjust to the dark: If you wish to observe faint objects, such as meteors or dim stars, give your eyes at least 15 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
  • Light Pollution: Even from a big city, one can see the moon, a handful of bright stars and sometimes the brightest planets. But to fully enjoy the heavens - especially a meteor shower, the constellations, or to see the amazing swath across the sky that represents our view toward the center of the Milky Way Galaxy - rural areas are best for night sky viewing. If you're stuck in a city or suburban area, a building can be used to block ambient light (or moonlight) to help reveal fainter objects. If you're in the suburbs, simply turning off outdoor lights can help.
  • Prepare for skywatching: If you plan to be out for more than a few minutes, and it's not a warm summer evening, dress warmer than you think necessary. An hour of observing a winter meteor shower can chill you to the bone. A blanket or lounge chair will prove much more comfortable than standing or sitting in a chair and craning your neck to see overhead.

TENT WASHING

Howdy, campers!  This is the subject NO ONE wants to talk about.  However, if you want to increase the life of your tent, it is absolutely essential that you wash it periodically.  So first, let's discuss the TYPES of tents we may own.  There are the smallish one/two man versions, such as backpacking tents (Style 1), then there are the slightly larger two/four man styles, mostly dome shaped (Style 2), and then there are the family style tents for four/six, with larger poles and generally cabin shaped rather than domes (Style 3).

Style 1 and most Style 2 tents can be washed in a front loading washer (or top loading washer with NO AGITATOR).  Use Cheer Free or another soap that has no perfumes or dyes.  Wash in COLD water on GENTLE cycle.  DO NOT DRY IN THE DRYER.  Line dry at home outside if possible, until COMPLETELY DRY.  Be sure to check corners for residual moisture.  A tent put away wet is a tent that will never be able to be used again due to growth of mold and fungus.  It will smell really yukky and will also delaminate the nice coating that keeps you dry.  Style 3 tents can be hand washed in the tub, or set up in the back yard and washed with a cloth or brush.  Have a bucket of soapy water handy, and keep dipping and washing.  Rinse well with the hose, and allow to dry completely.  If you wash in the tub, wring out as well as possible, and then line dry outside.  Be sure to fold your tents properly for storage, DO NOT STUFF INTO SACKS.  Folding ensures the proper storage of your zippers and doesn't allow them to kink, while stuffing will often kink the zippers, rendering them unusable later.

Following these simple steps will keep your tent not only clean but free from debris that can harm your tent over time.

After all, who wants to sleep in a stinky tent?  Although, you can always blame your tentmate, especially after a night of campfire chili beans.

HAPPY CAMPING!

Stay tuned and see what sorts of goodies the Doc has in store for the most memorable camping trips.  Till then, give your gear a good once over and clean/repair as needed.  You can put a tag on each item with the date checked so you know when it was last completed.

   CHUCKWAGON FIXIN'S FROM COOKY JASON

Hey there, campers! Here is a quick and easy meal that is one of my favorite camp recipes. When camping, the rule of thumb for great recipes is to maximize taste and nutrition while minimizing preparation time and cleanup. The best camp cooking recipes allow you to do this with the limited resources available in the outdoors.

Cooky Jason's World Famous Garlic Grilled Potatoes

This has long been one of my favorites and is requested at pretty much every campout that I host or attend. It's very easy, and there can be limitless variations. The following is one of the basic variations.

Major Players

2lbs potatoes (I usually use a combination of red and white. Russets are fine.)

1 tsp garlic powder

4 to 5 green onions, sliced thinly

½ cup of chives, chopped (Optional) Fig 1

2 Tbsp butter

1 Tbsp olive oil

½ cup parsley, chopped (fresh or dried is fine)

1 Tbsp onion powder or about ¼ cup chopped onion

Salt and pepper to taste

Now, there are couple ways to prepare this. My favorite way is to use a disposable one-time use aluminum baking pan on the grill. Choose the appropriate size.

Start the clock: 35 minutes - Chop potatoes into about ½ inch cubes. Drop the butter/margarine into bottom of pan and spread potatoes on top. Sprinkle on the parsley and garlic powder and onion powder, or chopped onion, on top of potatoes. Drizzle olive oil over the whole concoction and cover with foil. Put on grill at medium heat. Open foil, stir, and add chives. Replace with foil. Cook about another 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool about 5 to 8 minutes and add as much salt and pepper as you like.

Next - Cook 6 to 7 strips of bacon and give it a rough chop. The bacon is to be added when the potatoes are cooked. Add onions and thick sliced mushrooms right at the beginning. Same cooking time as before. Add the green onions and chives at the end because they cook relatively fast. And of course, chili powder and your favorite shredded cheese are always welcome. Bring it up one more level by replacing some of the potatoes with purple potatoes. This is great as a side dish at lunch or dinner time. They keep nicely as leftovers and this dish is very inexpensive to make considering how many servings you get out of it.

Score.
